After a series of alpha releases, the much anticipated Symphony OS distribution has entered a beta testing phase: "The first Preview of our Beta 1 release has now been released. While this release does not contain all items scheduled for the first beta it does represent a significant leap forward from the Alpha 4 release. Some notable changes in this release include: improved stability in mezzo; new faster orchestra renderer now using .orchestra for it's profile; updated applications; added Totem media player; build no longer uses set KNOPPIX paths so it can be installed and used multi-user with GDM or KDM...." Development Release: SymphonyOS 15.0 Beta |

The SymphonyOS project has announced the availability of a beta release. SymphonyOS 15.0 Beta is primarily a bug fix and stability release that includes improvements to window management and screen locking. "Following the release of SymphonyOS 14.1 the 4.x series of Mezzo was finally stable enough to use on a daily basis and throughout the development of 15.0 I have been running Mezzo as my full time desktop environment both for work and home use. Numerous minor improvements to stability have been implemented thanks to this and SymphonyOS 15.0 is now stable enough for use on a daily basis. Despite this improved performance we still caution against using SymphonyOS for mission critical operations as individual testing by one person is not sufficient to consider the distribution truly stable. We hope that this caveat will no longer be necessary by the time we reach 15.1." The release announcement includes further details and a screenshot. Those who remember SymphonyOS , a distribution that tried to revolutionise the Linux desktop with an innovative user interface half a decade ago, will be pleased to know that the project has just released a brand-new version, 14.1. From the release announcement: "We are happy to announce the release of SymphonyOS 14.1, the second release in the Phoenix series. This release includes several bug fixes over the 14.0 developer preview from earlier this year including: update to an Ubuntu 14.04 base system; improved handling of menu generation and proper updating of the menu system when system changes occur; improvements to the logout functionality; replacement of Slim DM with LightDM; security updates to the local httpd; fixes to installation from DVD. While this new release still receives a beta title and should not be considered stable, it is a large step forward and we hope to continue incremental releases as we improve the experience." Ryan Quinn has announced the release of SymphonyOne 2008.1, an Ubuntu-based distribution with Mezzo, an alternative desktop environment: "The Symphony OS Project is pleased to announce the release of SymphonyOne 2008.1, our first major release in almost a year. SymphonyOne is an almost 100% rewrite of all the Mezzo desktop code, taking advantage of more features of FVWM to provide a smaller footprint and more stable environment. Based on Ubuntu 7.10, SymphonyOne provides a complete desktop environment and full Ubuntu compatibility on systems with as little as a 200 MHz processor. Some of the key features include: based on Ubuntu 7.10 with all the latest updates; completely rewritten Mezzo Desktop; Web App System (similar to Mozilla Prizm but implemented in Orchestra and fully integrated into the system); removed the old desklet system...." After a long, involuntary break, the Symphony OS project is back with a new development release - version 2006-12: "The Symphony OS Project is pleased to announce the release of Symphony OS 2006-12. This release, the first since May, brings more stability and enhanced features to the young desktop environment and Linux distribution. Based on Debian Testing, Symphony OS 2006-12 now includes the GNOME System Tools within its System target menu, finally providing GUI system management functions that were sorely missing from previous releases. The tuxmachines.org web site is the first to publish a review of Symphony OS, a new desktop Linux distribution with some interesting ideas about usability: "Symphony OS is trying to get us to 'forget what you know about desktop Linux...' and perhaps with their new operating system, they may have a few takers. Indeed this is the most unique Linux desktop I've sampled and even in the early stages one can see they are really trying to accomplish something different. It really has been a long time since the word 'innovation' was used in its true sense of the word, but this time it can accurately apply."
