LG3D LiveCD is an interesting project incorporating Sun Microsystems' Project Looking Glass - a Java-based technology that attempts to bring a richer user experience to the desktop and applications via 3D windowing and visualisation capabilities. The newly released version 2.3 is considered to be the project's first stable release. Based on SLAX "Popcorn", but enhanced with Firefox, Gaim, working NVIDIA graphics driver, and copy2ram support, the live CD boots directly into a great-looking 3D desktop with many interesting capabilities (see this document for hints to navigate the 3D workspace). A 3D-accelerated graphics card is essential for enjoying the full capabilities of the Looking Glass desktop.

| LG3D LiveCD is a bootable Linux CD incorporating Project Looking Glass, a Java-based technology that attempts to bring a richer user experience to the desktop and applications via 3D windowing and visualisation capabilities. An open source development project evolved from Sun Microsystems' Advanced Development division, the LG3D live CD is based on SLAX, but it includes extra applications and technologies, such as Firefox and Gaim, working NVIDIA graphics driver, and copy2ram support. It is also possible to run it from a 256MB flash memory device.

A new stable version of LG3D LiveCD, a SLAX-based distribution showcasing the 3D-enabled Looking Glass desktop, has been released: "LG3D-LiveCD 2.5 available. There have been some great changes to the choice of included software: LG3D LiveCD uses now LG3D version 0.8.0 RC1, Java 6, Java3D 1.5.0 and JAI 1.1.3. This sounds pretty unstable and 'testing-only', however it seems to be quite stable. Version 2.5 is the first LG3D LiveCD released in two flavours: The 'full' edition available right now includes OpenOffice.org, GIMP, Quanta+, and other often requested software, while the 'lite' edition (available in the next few days) will only contain the SLAX Popcorn selection." The first development release of LG3D LiveCD 2.4, a SLAX-based distribution showcasing Sun Microsystem's Project Looking Glass, is now available for testing: "LG3D LiveCD 2.4-test1 available. Note: Release 2.4-test1 is - as the name says - only a testing release. Please file bug-reports to christian.ost at gmail.com. Most probably NVIDIA cards will cause problems, but I have currently no machine with a NVIDIA video card available for testing. LG3D LiveCD 2.4-test1 is based on SLAX 5.1.0 Popcorn Edition and contains a self-compiled CVS build of LG3D." The release announcement can be seen on the project's home page.
