| Edubuntu is a partner project of Ubuntu, a distribution suitable for classroom use. The aim is that an educator with limited technical knowledge and skill will be able to set up a computer lab, or establish an on-line learning environment, in an hour or less, and then administer that environment without having to become a fully-fledged Linux geek.

Distribution Release: Edubuntu 26.04 |
Edubuntu is a community flavour of Ubuntu designed for classroom use. The project's latest version, 26.04, includes entirely new administrative tools. The release announcement shares: "The Edubuntu Installer and Menu Administration tools have been completely rewritten from the ground up in Python, replacing the previous shell-based implementation. This brings significant improvements. Dual UI backends - automatically detects your desktop environment and launches the appropriate interface (GTK4 or Qt6). Cockpit integration - web-based remote administration module for configuring age-group settings across your network. Default and per-user setup control - administrators can apply age-group defaults system-wide or override them for individual non-administrator users. Multilingual support - now available in 21 languages. Enhanced menu administration - ability to disable terminal keyboard shortcuts for non-admin users, providing better control in classroom environments. Application menu controls - menu administration can hide Ptyxis by default for non-admin users and keeps per-user application lists aligned with the global application list. Improved account handling - non-user/system accounts are filtered out so only real student and staff accounts appear in the administrative interface. Improved UI polish - refined GTK and Qt layouts, improved spacing, and launch fixes for better day-to-day usability." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 25.10 |
Celebrating 20 years of the project, Amy Eickmeyer announced the availability of Edubuntu 25.10 earlier today. As an official Ubuntu flavour, Edubuntu brings the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open-source education software into the classroom. "We are happy and proud to release the 25.10 version of Edubuntu for your continued enjoyment and learning. This release includes GNOME 49. Geary has been replaced with Thunderbird which is used in Ubuntu as a feature-complete email, calendar, and contacts suite. The disadvantage is that it doesn't integrate well with the GNOME desktop via GNOME Online Accounts; however, during testing, we ran into problems with the latest versions of Geary and Evolution when it came to Microsoft 365 accounts, which are in use in a great deal of schools. GNOME Music has been replaced with Rhythmbox. This is because GNOME Music has ceased development. This release includes some additional educational games. We worked with Jonny Eickmeyer, our lead student advisor, to research games that already existed within our repository, and added them to the default installation! You may even notice gm-assistant has been added. This is an application to assist, for example, 'Dungeons & Dragons' dungeon masters with facilitating a game." Continue to the release announcement for more information and known issues. Download: edubuntu-25.10-desktop-amd64.iso (6,451MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Edubuntu 25.04 |
Amy Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 25.04, the latest stable version of the project's official Ubuntu variant designed to bring the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open-source education software into the classroom. "We are glad to let you know that we've released Edubuntu 25.04 and we've replaced some of our apps that were no longer supported with similar applications so you can still get the same wonderful experience. New features: this release includes GNOME 48; for Qt-based/KDE apps, we now include themes via Kvantum, mostly as a workaround for the inability to change the accent color in those applications; this theme is based on GNOME's libadwaita, on which the default Ubuntu theme (Yaru) is based; GNOME Notes is dead upstream, for that reason, we have switched to the resurrected GNote; likewise, GNOME Dictionary is also dead upstream and we have replaced it with Artha, which is more of a thesaurus but does dictionary operations as well. Known issues: upon first boot, the system will reboot - this is normal and is the mechanism to set the logo for the login screen; Artha will not launch on a Wayland session." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 24.10 |
Erich Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 24.10, an Ubuntu variant designed for use in schools and available for standard 64-bit computers as well as Raspberry Pi 5 boards: "Hello fellow educators and students! We've updated Edubuntu with a new wallpaper and added some security features in-line with Ubuntu desktop. We are excited for these small, but mighty changes to help you get the most out of Edubuntu. New Features: we have changed our default wallpaper for this and the next two releases, this will distinguish these releases for this LTS cycle until the next LTS; this release includes GNOME 47; like Ubuntu Desktop, Edubuntu now includes the Permissions Prompting and the Security Center. This release is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. We didn't have much time this cycle to work through our applications and determine which applications are out there to add new ones, so there's not much new in terms of new applications this cycle." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 24.04 |
Erich Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 24.04, a special edition of Ubuntu with focus on education. The new release brings a new minimal install option and support for the Raspberry Pi 5 boards, among many other improvements: "We are pleased to announce the release of Edubuntu 24.04 LTS, code-named 'Noble Numbat'. This is the first long-term support in ten years and we are excited to have it available to everyone. Our vision is to allow Edubuntu to reach people that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford quality education software. Whether it's to supplement what you already have or to replace completely your education needs, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did working on it. This is a long-term support release and as such, it is supported for 3 years, until April 2027. Features: due to popular demand, we have released images for the Raspberry Pi 5; we have introduced a new metapackage, installable from Edubuntu Installer, for teaching tools; we have developed a metapackage for music education, installable from Edubuntu installer; Edubuntu now includes a minimal install option...." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 23.10 |
Edubuntu is an education-focused community edition of Ubuntu. Version 23.10 of the distribution introduces a handful of new default applications to the user experience. "This release is meant to be evolutionary, not revolutionary. We are still working out which applications and features work best in the overall educational ecosystem. As always, feedback is appreciated. New apps: Startup Disk Creator: This will help users and administrators make an easy USB drive from a .iso image of any Ubuntu flavor. GNOME Videos: Video player. GNOME Music: Music player. Backup: Backup utility. Basic256: Teaches students the BASIC programming language (@eeickmeyer, our technical lead, first learned to program in this language when he was 10 years old on a Commodore VIC-20!) Extension Manager: An easy way to add and administer GNOME Shell extensions. OpenBoard: A whiteboard application for teachers. Mnemosyne: A flashcard application. Convertall: A powerful standalone unit converter (Bonus: GNOME Shell can also convert units, just ask it!)" Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Edubuntu 23.04 |
Amy Eickmeyer has announced the availability of Edubuntu 23.04, a brand-new release from the project that seeks to bring the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open source education software into the classroom. Edubuntu has been revived after a 9-year hiatus. The release announcement, which includes several screenshots, lists some of the more interesting features: "By default, Edubuntu's application overview is alphabetized, which makes it a learning tool out-of-the-box so students can see an example of alphabetization and cataloging. Additionally, educational applications are grouped into folders by subject, making the application overview easy to navigate. Using Edubuntu Installer, you can configure the system for a certain age group, whether that be preschool, primary (elementary), secondary (middle/high school) or tertiary (college/university). Each configuration comes with a different set of applications and a different layout and default wallpaper. Using Edubuntu Menu Administrator, administrators can configure which applications are hidden for non-administrator users with the check of a box."
