Distribution Release: Kurumin Linux 7.0 Light |
The Kurumin project has announced the release of Kurumin Light 7.0, a mini-CD edition of the Brazilian distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux. Kurumin Light comes on only 182 MB, but includes the full KDE desktop with Konqueror and Kaffeine, the Kurumin-specific magic icons and all the custom scripts. Distribution Release: Kurumin Linux 6.1 "Light" |
A new, stripped-down edition of Kurumin Linux 6.1 has been released. The Kurumin project, which started in 2003 as a 200MB bootable CD, but has since expanded to include OpenOffice.org, Java and many other popular software applications, is returning to its roots with "Kurumin Light". Besides eliminating some of the larger software packages, as well as dropping support for scanners and 3D accelerated graphics cards, this 182MB live CD has been optimised for fast booting and reduced memory consumption. As such, Kurumin "Light" fits on any mini-CD and 256MB USB storage device, and it can also serve as a quick hard-disk installation media. Please see the release announcement (in Portuguese) for further information. Download from here: kurumin-light-6.1.iso (182MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kurumin Linux 7.0 Alpha |
Carlos Morimoto has announced the start of a new development cycle leading towards Kurumin Linux 7.0. According to the release announcement (in Portuguese), version 7.0 is expected to be a special, "long-lasting" release, based on Debian "etch". As such, the Kurumin development tree has been synchronised with "etch" and users can expect headache-free version updates to a relatively stable Debian "testing" branch, instead of running a more problematic combination of software from both "testing" and "unstable" Debian branches. One feature that will not be included in Kurumin 7.0 is Xgl - a technology that is not considered mature enough and which is of interest to a comparatively small proportion of Linux users - those with modern ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards. One other new feature in this release is read/write support in mounted NTFS partitions. Interested testers can download the new CD image from here: kurumin-7.0a.iso (583MB, MD5).

Development Release: Kurumin Linux 4.0 Alpha 1 |
An early development release of the all new Kurumin Linux 4.0 is now available for download and testing. This is the first release that comes with kernel 2.6 - it is version 2.6.8.1 with settings by the KANOTIX project and compiled with GCC 3.3.4. Some symbolic links in the kernel headers folder were corrected so that the NVIDIA and VMware drivers compile without problems. To install the kernel sources please execute install-kernel-source-vanilla.sh. After some light testing, the developers believe that USB, sound cards and network cards work correctly, but the kernel does not come with any 'soft modem' drivers and ndiswrapper. This is an early alpha release the main purpose of which is to test the new kernel. Read the full announcement (in Portuguese) for further details. Distribution Release: Kurumin Linux 3.21 |
An updated release of Kurumin Linux, version 3.21, is now available. The most noticeable change is the size of the ISO image - the sub-200MB image has now swelled to 323MB. This is because of newly included OpenOffice.org 1.1.2, (called KuruminOffice in the distribution due to a trademark dispute in Brazil), Java and Ndiswrapper for wireless networking support. Additionally, a "magic icon" for installing FreeNX Server has been added. Besides all the technical changes, the project's lead developer Carlos Morimoto announced that, from now on, he would devote much less time to the development of Kurumin Linux and releases will therefore be less frequent. Distribution Release: Kurumin Linux 1.4 |
Kurumin Linux is a new Brazilian project based on KNOPPIX. Developed by Carlos E. Morimoto, Kurumin Linux seems to have gained many followers in a very short time. The CD boots into a graphical environment with Brazilian Portuguese as the default language and KDE as the default desktop. It differs from KNOPPIX in that many packages have been removed, so the size of the full ISO image is less than 200MB. The Kurumin Linux web site (Portuguese only) is very useful, with plenty of good documentation, active user forums and download mirrors. Version 1.4 was released earlier this week. Download: kurumin-1.4.iso (197MB).
