The grml distribution is a bootable CD based on KNOPPIX and Debian with collection of GNU/Linux software especially for users of texttools and system administrators. It provides automatic hardware detection and it can be used as a rescue system or for analysing systems and networks. Version 0.3 was released today: "Release 0.3 - code name 'Hustenstopper'. Fixed several bugs. Improved hardware detection. Several improved, updated and extended configuration files. Special new features: use of udev (Linux configurable dynamic device naming support); multitail running on tty12; grml-templates: this package includes several templates for use with LaTeX, C, C++, Qt, tpp, Makefile,...; showing cpu-status inside GNU screen." It also provides automatic hardware detection. Grml can be used as a rescue system, for analysing systems and networks, or as a working environment. Due to on-the-fly decompression, Grml includes about 2 GB of software and documentation on the CD.

Grml is a live distribution based on Debian. It includes a collection of GNU/Linux software especially for users of text tools and system administrators. The project's latest release, Grml 2024.02, runs on Linux kernel 6.6 and introduces several new options for the grml-live utility as well as zsh features. It is based on Debian's "testing" branch. "Grml - new stable release 2021.07 available. This Grml release provides fresh software packages from Debian testing ('bullseye'). As usual it also incorporates current hardware support and fixes known bugs from the previous Grml release. Important changes: the Grml IRC channel moved to OFTC; the network configuration tool netcardconfig no longer prompts for uncommon wireless/WiFi options, to simplify and speed up its usage. This Grml release provides fresh software packages from Debian testing ('bullseye'). As usual it also incorporates current hardware support and fixes known bugs from the previous Grml release. Important changes: the default mount point for the live system was changed; tools like grml2usb, grml-paste and grml-x have been ported from Python 2 to Python 3 - we no longer support Python 2 in our tools; the live system no longer uses a custom Grml kernel - instead we switched to the 'linux-image' packages provided by Debian. This Grml release provides fresh software packages from Debian 'Testing' which will be released as a stable Debian 'Buster' in 2019. As usual, it also incorporates current hardware support and fixes known bugs from previous Grml releases. Important changes: when using the 'ssh' boot option, Grml automatically starts haveged, a userspace entropy daemon which uses HAVEGE (HArdware Volatile Entropy Gathering and Expansion); the cpufrequtils package with its loadcpufreq handling has been dropped. The Grml distribution is a live disc based on Debian that includes tools for system administrators for detecting hardware, running tests and rescuing systems. The new version of the distribution, Grml 2017.05, switches from file-rc to systemd for the project's init software. This release also shifts the 32-bit build from i586 to i686. "Switch from file-rc to systemd as init system. grml-live (the build system for creating Grml-based Linux live systems) still supports non-systemd systems using file-rc, though we don't plan to maintain this in the long run. For the reasons why we actually switched to systemd please visit the FAQ. Due to the change to systemd some boot options in the current release might not work as before and some further issues might have been unnoticed yet. Please let us know if you should stumble upon any such issues. Following Debian's switch, the 32-bit PC support (known as the architecture 'i386' and what's provided by 'grml32') now no longer covers a plain i586 processor. This release offers a number of small changes along with a transition from using file-rc to systemd for the distribution's init software. "Switch from file-rc to systemd as init system. grml-live (the build system for creating Grml (based) Linux live systems) still supports non-systemd systems using file-rc, though we don't plan to maintain this in the long run.
