Reviews: Xandros Business Desktop 3.0 |
Mad Penguin has taken a thorough look at the brand new Xandros Business Desktop 3.0, released last week: "How many distributions available today have the functionality it takes to be a part of a full-fledged Windows domain? The answer is simple: One. Xandros understands this growing requirement and has been developing around it for quite some time now. As a matter of fact, Xandros stands as the only Linux distributor that seems to make it their primary goal. Others may claim that they are providing the ideal Windows-friendly distribution, but until they can show me a simple way to join a domain (Windows NT legacy and Active Directory), connect to network drives and have the choice to make them persistent over reboots, connect to shared printers, and manage users... I will never consider them ready." Read the rest of the review with screenshots.

Reviews: Xandros Desktop OS 3 OCE |
India's Techtree has reviewed the free edition of Xandros Desktop OS 3. Their conclusion? "Linux is not ready": "Everything in Xandros on the surface worked so well - browsing the web, checking email, playing music and movies... But when you try to install new applications, you get screwed. Frustrated. And you want to boot back into Windows. Yes, there is Xandros Networks - the online software repository for stuff that's tweaked and tried and tested to work with Xandros, but obviously they won't let you download a CD burning tool that bypasses the 4X limitation that they put in the first place... Xandros is good, but it's not ready. But that's not Xandros' fault. Linux is not ready." The 3-page review with screenshots starts here.

Xandros Desktop OS 3 Is a Windows XP Replacement |
DesktopOS has published a review of Xandros Desktop OS 3: "The desktop environment is a Xandros enhanced KDE version 3.3. It has most of the features that everyday users would come to expect from a modern operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Plus XP, & Office XP. The Xandros development team has customized KDE to make things more user-friendly. Software like XMMS, Xine, OpenOffice.org 1.1, and Mozilla web browser 1.7 are included and have been customized also. The Xandros visual appearance has improved dramatically in version 3.0 to be more much attractive then it was in version 2.x. In saying that at least Xandros make the effort to customize the desktop, which is more then many other Linux desktop organizations do." Read the rest of the review here.

The developers have created a fine product that can be safely recommended to users wishing to try out an alternative operating system without having to go through a steep learning curve." LinuxPlanet: "Xandros Desktop OS 3.0 is a solid, well-designed distribution. As mentioned multiple times, this is a distribution targeted towards new desktop Linux users, such as those that may formerly have lived on Microsoft Windows systems."

Review: Xandros Desktop OS 3 Deluxe Edition |
Linux.com has reviewed Xandros Desktop OS 3: "The installation is the best I've seen. Xandros Desktop OS 3 gets high marks from me for correctly configuring the built-in wireless card and the display, both without any assistance whatsoever from me. Even the installation screens look as polished as any I've ever seen. The default installation results in a complete and highly functional desktop box. My only complaints about Xandros have to do with their software selections and their rebranding of projects." The 2-page review starts here.

First Look at Xandros Desktop 3 Deluxe |
Mad Penguin has published a comprehensive review of Xandros Desktop 3: "In light of the high availability of support that Xandros has to offer new users, the complete ease of use, simple updates, secure Internet browsing, VPN support, CD/DVD burning facilities, and overall system stability, it's an easy choice when deciding which distro to purchase for first time Linux users. Xandros it is. Whether you or someone you know is interested in giving Linux a shot, Xandros is a sure thing, and a very safe bet. The thing is, they will work out the rough spots, which is more than I can say for their higher priced proprietary competition. All things considered, including the pros and cons, Xandros is still king of the newbie Linux desktop in my book. Job well done guys!" Here is the rest of the review with screenshots.

Review: Xandros Desktop OS 3.0 - Deluxe Edition |
Linux Links has published a new review of Xandros Desktop 3.0: "If you want a slick integrated graphical interface, combined with the power of Linux, we can heartily recommend Xandros Desktop Version 3 - Deluxe edition. You'll still be able to use the key Windows programs, but also have available the wealth of Linux software at your fingertips. Version 3 represents a huge upgrade and Xandros deserves credit for assembling the most slick Linux operating system we've ever used. The improvements made to Xandros File Manager and Xandros Networks are also noteworthy, although we'll have to wait a week to see what their online shop will offer." Review: Xandros Desktop 3 Deluxe |
OSNews has published a new review of Xandros Desktop 3.0, released last week: "Xandros is possibly the prettiest Linux I've seen thus far. It's smooth without being effortful, colorful without being garish, clean without being too simple, and functional without being novelty. It includes useful applications, and provides tools that are essential to computing. Frankly, what it has that many miss the mark on seems pretty simple: it looks and feels like a unified system. The entire experience adds a legitimacy to desktop Linux seldom seen elsewhere. The nay-sayers will say that Xandros is dumbed down or a Windows wannabe, but I'd argue that the Xandros people are listening to what's needed and providing it." The full review with screenshots.

The first review of the new Xandros Desktop OS 3.0 has been published by Extreme Tech: "We're very pleased with this version of Xandros. There's quite a bit of value here for anyone and we feel very comfortable recommending it to anyone who wants to move off of Windows and onto Linux. It's stable, easy to use, and comes with a good range of applications. Laptop wireless problem aside, in terms of ease of use, we think that Xandros has set a new standard for Linux distributions. We can't wait to see what version 4 of Xandros will look like..." The 8-page review with many screenshots starts here.

Xandros 2.5 Business Edition Review |
Flexbeta has published a comprehensive review of Xandros Desktop 2.5: "There are many Windows vs Linux TCO comparisons available on the web, however, most comparisons only calculate the costs of using 100% Microsoft vs 100% Open Source software. This does not have to be the case. Utilizing Xandros Business Desktop, you can take small steps to converting your business or organization to Open Source Software. You do not have to retrain personnel to use a new application for every operation, with Xandros and Crossover Office you can utilize the applications that you already have. In my experience, without exception, whenever I replaced a Windows based workstation or server with a Linux based alternative, the maintenance costs have always dropped dramatically." Review: Xandros Desktop 2.5 Business Edition |
Linux.com has published a review of Xandros Desktop 2.5 Business Edition: "So Xandros buries Windows in terms of ease of installation and configuration, and in reliability and value of included software and support, but is it worth more than, say, SUSE Linux Professional? SUSE is just as user-friendly and secure, and it uses newer software, a newer kernel that supports newer hardware, and costs $40 less. Add in a CrossOver Office license and it ends up as the same price, except SUSE doesn't have a per annum subscription fee and it comes with piles and piles of software applications, many of which are not available through Xandros Networks. Xandros is good, but it's not good enough to be the hands-down choice for small/medium-sized businesses." The full story.

Xandros Open Circulation Edition Reviewed |
Mad Penguin has published a comprehensive review of the recently released Xandros Desktop Open Circulation Edition: "Xandros Open Circulation Edition is a huge improvement over any distribution I have used previously in the areas of ease of use, Windows integration, and user-friendliness. The Xandros team, it seems, has taken the excellent current open source projects, put them together, and then filled in the cracks. Key areas that are missing from other distributions, such as built in CD burning and native double-click media playing support. The Xandros File Manager is unbeatable - it makes me envious to not have it on the other distributions I use." Two 2-page review with screenshots starts here.

Review: Xandros Desktop OS 2.0 |
UnixReview has published a new review of Xandros Desktop 2.0: "The whole effect is completely different from the first version of Linux I put on my computer several years ago-and different, even, from the version of Linux I put on my computer 18 months ago. Of the three versions I've reviewed recently, Xandros does the best job of steering the user away from the classic Linux complexity, showcasing the most useful open source tools, and keeping the experience intuitive and easy. Xandros File Manager, with its search skills, thumbnails, easy sharing, and Windows/NFS parallel browsing, is an especially exciting addition to the gallery of Linux tools." Interview: Xandros and KDE |
KDE Dot News has published an interview with Rick Berenstein, Xandros Chairman and CTO and Ming Poon, Vice President for Software Development about Xandros and their products, and the relationship between Xandros and the KDE project: "We actually do quite a big surgery on KDE in every release. We changed things from how the File Open dialog looks and work across network environments to replacing the standard KDE file manager (Konqueror) completely. Most people think that Xandros File Manager (XFM) is a highly tweaked version of Konqueror. The truth is that it is not Konqueror at all. XFM was started in the KDE 1.x days before Konqueror even existed." Read the complete interview here.

Product Review: Xandros 2.0 Business Edition |

Three reviews of Xandros Business Desktop were published on the very day of its official release. Linux Journal: "The user interface is familiar, and the primary applications are intuitive. StarOffice 7 is as easy to use as Microsoft Word. And, if you don't need to access an Exchange server for e-mail, Ximian Evolution is as easy as Outlook." OSNews: "Overall, this product is a good office solution, it has the most needed software in place and it works well as I experienced no crashes or any other malfunctions." MadPenguin: "All in all, $129.00USD for a Linux distro that is this powerful plus has StarOffice and Crossover Office bundled into the package is well worth it."

Xandros: User-friendly to a Fault |
The Register has published a review of Xandros Desktop 2.0: "Xandros succeeds in ease of installation and ease of use. A Linux novice can get it up and running without bother. Indeed, the press release for reviewers urges one not to compare it with Linux, but with Windows XP. Review: Xandros Desktop 2.0 |
Cahtech has published a new review of Xandros Desktop 2.0: "Xandros is a stunning distribution for a new Linux user. It certainly is not the be all and end all given its performance lethargy (booting and use), and will therefore not be replacing the Windows desktop any time soon. Although NVIDIA drivers are installed and work well, ATI drivers are not so great. GNOME is not provided, which is a shame, although if you know about it, chances are you can install it using the HOWTO on the unofficial forums." Read the rest of the review with screenshots.

Review: Xandros Deluxe 2.0 |
OSNews has published another review of Xandros Desktop 2.0 Deluxe edition: "The most striking thing about Xandros is that it doesn't really feel like you're using Linux, it feels like you're running an OS that just happens to run Linux (and many Windows) apps and shares some low level workings with Linux. It should be seen as an alternative to OSX and Windows in it's own right, not just as another Linux distribution as it is much more completete than many other distros - you don't find yourself having to configure each of your devices - it's all ready for you." Spawn of Debian Faceoff: Xandros 2.0 |
Linux.com continues its series of Debian-based desktop distribution reviews with Xandros 2.0: "Xandros is a very impressive distribution. It's sad that bugs in one key application (the Xandros Desktop Wizard) were exposed on my particular test configuration. Both the Installation and Connectivity categories suffered as a result. If you've read about Xandros 2.0 elsewhere on the Internet, you know that it is drawing rave reviews. ... I like the fact that Xandros provides an ultra-easy installation path for noobies and also a custom path that allows more experienced users to get under the hood a little bit. If you are a power Windows user looking for your first Linux distribution, you'll be hard pressed to find a better choice." The full review.

Review: Xandros 2.0 Deluxe |
ExtremeTech has reviewed the Deluxe edition of Xandros Desktop 2.0: "The Xandros distro is perfect for those who want to explore migrating from Windows to Linux while still retaining an excellent level of Windows compatibility. It also coexists nicely with an existing Windows installation. Xandros has wisely positioned its product between the Lindows crowd and the more do-it-yourself Libranet types. Anyone using Windows right now who's interested in trying Linux should give this distro a shot. It's that good." ExtremeTech gives Xandros 2.0 an overall rating of 9 out of 10. Can a Geek Love Xandros? |
With its many superb, user-friendly enhancements, Xandros Desktop has justly become known as one of the top products for Windows-to-Linux migration, suitable for any non-technical user. But how about the rest of us? Some of the more experienced among the readers can surely configure CUPS with Samba by editing configuration files with closed eyes. This kind of exercise is useful and fun the first few times, but it can quickly become a mundane task if it has to repeated often. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a distribution that could do it near-automatically? In other words, wouldn't it be nice if we just used Xandros? And despite our natural resistance to employ GUI for any kind of configuration, could we still love Xandros?
Robert Storey investigates...

Open has reviewed Xandros Desktop 2.0: "The Xandros file manager provides the user with an instantaneous highly integrated view of all local and network resources. Included in the list of resources is a "CD Writer" resource, which (mouse over) presents users with all of the functions typically found in optional CD writer software. Integrating these functions in the Xandros file manager makes music and data CD creation a trivial drag-and-drop operation." The full review with screenshots.

Review: Xandros 2.0 - Standard Edition |
LinuxReview.net has reviewed Xandros Desktop 2.0, Standard edition: "Overall, and more so for its targeted market, Xandros 2.0 is a very well thought out and put together distribution. That's not to say Xandros is perfect, or perfect for everyone, but it is an excellent place to start for people coming from Windows who want to use Linux and don't care about learning all the interworkings of the operating system. Its major downside is that there is no freely downloadable version or evaluation version available. I think it would do Xandros well to create a live CD for people to demo." Xandros 2.0 - King of the Linux Desktop |
MadPenguin is highly impressed with the recently released Xandros Desktop 2.0: "This is by far the best attempt I have seen to date at creating a solid transitional desktop for those enlightened people who might be looking to jump off of the virus-ridden Microsoft BSOD wagon. Everything simply works from web plugins to included applications. Everything fits together the way it should and does not look 'thrown together' like some other Linux versions that come to mind. In the category of Linux conversion vehicles, Xandros is king. If you are a long-time Windows addict, take my word on this and grab a copy. You won't regret it." Read the rest of the review here.

Desktop Distro Shootout Part 5 - Xandros 2.0 Deluxe |
OSNews has published the final installment of the site's desktop distro shootout, reviewing Xandros Desktop 2.0 Deluxe: "Xandros offers a smoother user experience. Everything flows easily and it is a soothing environment to use. Xandros is the first Linux distro that I have ever seen which actually does offer a user experience equal to Windows. But the Xandros tech support is less than stellar and their business judgement worries me. ... For right now they are showing signs (like dropping part of their networking capability without telling the user base, and leaving tech support unmanned over a holiday following their new release, and neglecting to mention a few details about installing from a CD-ROM in their instructions) of being behind the curve. They have missed a few things. Nothing major, nothing that can't be fixed. But will they fix it?" This comprehensive 8-page review starts here.

Xandros 2.0 Deluxe Edition Review |
OSNews has published a new review of Xandros Desktop 2.0: "Overall I found Xandros to be one of the most user-friendly Linux distributions available. Xandros did a good job narrowing the focus and coming out with something that is actually usable. As a more advanced user I found a few things that annoyed me, but I think that less experienced Linux users will enjoy it. I would give Xandros a 7/10 as a desktop operating system. I rated it down 1 points because it needs to be a little more polish graphically and 2 points because it completely ignores GNOME applications." The 2-page review with screenshots starts here.

Review: Why I use Xandros Desktop 2.0 |
DesktopOS.com has reviewed the newly released Xandros Desktop 2.0: "What is better about Xandros 2.0 over 1.0? A lot of the above functionality was available in the excellent Xandros 1.0. Here are some of the specific improvements of Xandros 2.0 over 1.0: Cd-burning capabilities of Xandros File Manager is totally new. Xandros Networks has been dramatically improved and works faster as it is now based on Konqueror, although Xandros do need to populate it with more commercial applications. At the moment there is just Opera and Codeweavers. At this stage, I would say that Xandros has the infrastructure in place, and they just need to invite software vendors over to join the party. Xandros File Manager is much snappier and more stable." The complete review with screenshots.

Linux Weekly News has published an interview with the recently appointed CEO of Xandros Corporation, Andreas Typaldos: "We've offered free single-click updates for bug fixes and patches since the initial release of Xandros 1. That policy will not only continue with Xandros 2, but Xandros Desktop users will also have access to one of the world's largest inventories of free Linux software. Xandros Networks is an important sales channel, so expect to hear some interesting announcements about it in the near future. Rest assured that any subscriptions or direct sales will be for real value add, such as version enhancements or third-party software that's been QA'd by Xandros engineers. I should also point out that Xandros provides everything most users need right out of the box and we don't charge for updates to otherwise free software such as OpenOffice.org or the Mozilla communications suite." If You Don't Do Windows |
PC Magazine features an article reviewing and rating 5 desktop Linux distributions (LindowsOS, Lycoris, Red Hat, SUSE, and Xandros). The top honours go to Xandros and SUSE, with Xandros receiving a slightly higher number of points: "Although Xandros Desktop 1.1 is a relatively new product, it can certainly claim access to a large talent pool of developers. Why? Most of the developers at Xandros worked together on the now-defunct Corel Linux distribution. It's obvious that they have built on the heritage of the easy-to-install and easy-to-use OS: Installation of Xandros Desktop was painless." The complete story.

A Desktop for the Masses? Xandros Linux |
MadPenguin reviews Xandros Desktop 1.0: "Overall I think this a pretty good distribution for newcomers. Since the distro seems to be stable enough, Xandros developers need to focus on updating critical packages to newer versions to allow new users to utilize full Linux functionality. All in all, the show is worth the price of admission. It comes with a great manual, decent support, has value added applications, and is running Debian. Need I say more?" The review with screenshots.

Review: Xandros Desktop 1.0 |
Linurati reviews the Xandros Desktop 1.0 distribution: "As a linux user for the past three years, I have used a lot of distributions, and read many different reviews. Most of those reviews spend a lot of time on the installation, and give details of which versions of the gcc compiler, Kernel, XFree86, KDE, and Gnome are included. This is not one of those reviews. This is the kind of review I wish I'd had when I was still looking for just the right distro. This is the review that says: 'Here is your linux distribution. Just install it, and your stuff will work.'" The rest of the review with screenshots.

Xandros: Delivering the corporate desktop |
DesktopLinux interviews Xandros' Chairman Frederick Berenstein and VP of software development, Ming Poon about the global corporate transition to Linux, Xandros' corporate strategy, open source philosophy, and much, much more: "You always hear the press saying that Linux is not ready for the 'masses'. This is the same press that said, in 1998, that although Linux was a stable and secure operating system, it would not get much farther in the server market beyond the 2 percent share it then enjoyed. With the groundswell of countries standardizing their educational systems on Linux, and the number of large corporations moving to Linux, this year will see an enormous explosion of Linux in computing environments, including the desktop. Xandros Desktop Deluxe 1.0 Review |
LinuxLookup reviews Xandros Desktop 1.0: "The Xandros Desktop development team should be applauded for the simple elegance and fearlessness exhibited in the construction of this system. I have finally found a Linux OS that is not afraid of alienating hardcore Linux users by incorporating some of the triumphs of Windows like certain aspects of the XFM and acknowledging the importance of access to Microsoft Office through Crossover Office. A function that I found extremely useful was the one-click access to another user's desktop so that anyone could have his or her own space without a confusing Ctrl-Shift-Fx key combination. They have also cast aside the belief that Windows converts will be frightened by an operating system that proudly acknowledges it is wholly and completely based on GNU/Linux. Xandros makes it obvious that its roots are in Debian and brings many of the best aspects of Debian to the forefront. I was even able to setup apt functionality allowing me to add software directly from Debian's source sites with the help of the forums available on forums.xandros.com. Another aspect that impressed me was the stability. I installed at least thirty applications without a crash and with minimal reboots. This ability to be the best of both worlds leaves Xandros in a class all it's own." The full review.

Distribution Release: Xandros Desktop Standard 1.0 |
Xandros has announced the availability of Xandros Desktop Standard Edition 1.0: "Xandros, provider of the award-winning Xandros Desktop, today announced the release of the Xandros Desktop Standard Edition 1.0, in order to expand consumer choice and deliver the Xandros Desktop experience to a broader audience. Unlike Xandros Desktop Deluxe, Xandros Standard Edition cannot reallocate space from a Windows NTFS during the install, though it still can reallocate space from a FAT, VFAT, or FAT32 partition. By removing such Deluxe features such as CodeWeavers CrossOver Office and Plugin, the printed user guide, and the Technology Preview CD, Xandros Desktop can be made available at a terrific price. Xandros Desktop Standard provides one incident of e-mail installation support, as opposed to 30-day support with Xandros Desktop Deluxe." See the announcement and the product comparison chart for more details. Xandros Desktop Standard 1.0 ships for US$39.95 and you can order it from the Xandros Store.

OFB's Penguin Shootout: Xandros Desktop 1.0 |
Open For Business is running a "penguin shootout" of the major Linux distributions, one of which will walk away with the OFB award for the best distribution. Xandros Desktop is the first one in the review lineup: "All of this considered, Xandros is still a real contender for those requiring an easy migration path from Windows that includes support for some legacy applications (such as Office 2000). In many cases, running Windows software under Linux is not necessary, still there are times when the need does arise, and for those cases, Xandros is definitely a drop-in solution." You can read the review here and we look forward to the rest of the reviews and the announcement of the award winner.

Xandros is Managing Well, Thank You |
Consulting Times has published an overview of XFM, a star feature of Xandros Desktop 1.0: "A major technical achievement of XFM is that it is built for truly asynchronous operation. Unlike Windows Explorer, XFM does not block (hang) when doing an operation, such as browsing a network location. You can click to open a large remote folder and keep working while it is being opened. Any file operations (such as copy, move, delete or download) are also implemented asynchronously. You can start large file transfer and keep using XFM. You can even initiate multiple file operations and then close XFM without an impact on these." The complete story with some interesting screenshots.

Xandros Desktop 1.0 Review |
OSNews has posted a new user review of Xandros Desktop 1.0: "So what do I think? Is it worth it? No easy answer here. At $99.00, Xandros is one of the more expensive distros out there. But that's still less than any legal copy of Windows, except maybe an upgrade CD. If you're a Windows user who's looking for a stable, easy-to-use introduction to Linux, I'd say 'yes', this is worth it. Plus you can keep Windows and set up a dual-boot. If this describes you, I'd say 'go for it!' My summary: Installation is a breeze and most normal computing tasks are easy and fairly Windows-like. This distro is crying for a firewall, and as mentioned above, the CD-burning program is as basic as it gets. Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10. It's a winner." The full story.

Review of Xandros Desktop 1.0 |
OSNews has published a review of Xandros Desktop 1.0: "I don't know how many people have sat down with a Windows user and watched them install Linux or try to use it. Some people will gladly switch without incident, as long as they get a half-decent introduction and have someone to ring with questions. Others will need more coaxing. Xandros seems to understand a particular market segment: Windows users at home or work who are prepared to leap, provided the jump is painless. What Xandros has achieved in the Windows usability is impressive. I'm interested to see what's next for the Xandros Desktop. I'm also curious to see what they have planned for their upcoming Xandros Server OS." The complete 2-page review with a number of screenshots.

Xandros 1.0: Easy on the Eyes, Easy to Install |
LinuxWorld has published an article describing the installation process of Xandros Desktop 1.0: "The Xandros logo appeared near the bottom of the screen soon after booting from the CD. Seconds later, a few lines of text advisories appeared at the top. This was not the normal fast scrolling text I'm used to seeing at boot time. I was informed that Xandros was preparing a graphical setup, that it was loading the kernel, and that it was initializing the kernel. Next, I watched as a few more lines informed me that Xandros was searching for modules and for the Xandros CD, which it promptly found. Not as informative as a "normal" Linux boot, but not as intimidating for the newbie either." Click here to get to the start of the two-page overview.

Xandros Desktop - Not Your Father's Linux Distribution |
LinuxPlanet reviews Xandros Desktop: "The Xandros Desktop is already a mature Linux product, thanks to its roots in Corel Linux, several extensive rounds of beta testing from Linux and Corel fans, and the apparent excellence and commitment of the people at Xandros. In the long run, as any technologist knows, a great product isn't a guarantee of success. Differentiation and promotion are the keys to long-term survival in the Linux market. The Xandros Desktop is an eminently usable distribution aimed at desktop users, not the people who want to run muscle-bound Web, email, or news servers. Xandros' focus on the types of software that end-users want to run and their amazingly tight integration with and support for Microsoft Windows applications gives them an edge over any other end-user desktop Linux distribution that I've encountered." Xandros - Linux For The Masses |
BeyondUnreal reviews Xandros Desktop 1.0: "Xandros 1.0 is truly Linux for the masses, and deserves your support. Sure, it's $99 at a time when you can pick up a copy of RedHat 8.0 for $39, but Xandros does things automatically that leave RedHat (and other Linux distros) wanting. The simple fact that you can install and run Xandros 1.0 in 20 minutes, even run modern 3D games during your first boot, is amazing. Windows network integration, something that is certainly doable in other distros through a manual installation of Samba, is again automatic, and works 'out of the box.' Updating Xandros is easy, and unlike RedHat Networks, happens immediately, right after you click the link. Best of all, Xandros is based on an extremely solid foundation - Debian Linux, so you don't have to worry about reliability or security. If you're looking for an alternative to Windows, look no further than Xandros. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to use Linux!" Read the comprehensive review here.

Xandros Desktop 1.0: Another Winning Debian Distro |
ExtremeTech has reviewed Xandros Desktop: "We like Xandros. The install is easy, it has good Windows compatibility, apt is available and it comes with a good selection of software. We wish that Gnome was available but if a choice of desktops doesn't matter to you, then Xandros is a good bet. Although some people have been carping about the US$99 price tag, we think it's worth it considering that you get Crossover Office and CrossOver Plugin bundled right into the desktop. Perhaps Xandros should come out with a version without the Crossover products that is significantly cheaper for people that aren't interested in Windows compatibility. All in all, Xandros is fine desktop OS choice. It feels less commercial than Lindows and comes with more software. We expect great things from Xandros as its product matures and grows." What Makes Xandros Tick |
While on the subject of the new Xandros Desktop release, here is an interview with Ming Poon, the VP for Software Development at Xandros Corporation: "Our goal is not to be the flashiest or the newest, but when you do things, they just work. You run applications and they don't crash. Things are integrated, such as plug-and-play USB. It sounds bad for people who like things flashy, but we'd be very happy if it's boring, if it works and it's a viable alternative. We'll be switching to KDE 3 in the not too distant future, but we're still holding off because there are lots of integration issues in that." This is the complete interview by Consulting Times. No, I still haven't been able to obtain the list of packages included in Xandros Desktop - if any of you happen to have it and don't mind sharing it, please send it in, thank you :-) (Calling on the Linux community to help is often a lot faster than getting information out of a corporation!)

Distribution Release: Xandros Desktop |
The wait is over: "Xandros, the leading developer of a pioneering Linux-based desktop operating environment, today announced the availability of the premiere version of Xandros Desktop - the industry's first true alternative to Windows - which can potentially save corporations millions of dollars as well as lengthen the lifecycle of their current computers." Read the rest of the press release. The only way to obtain Xandros Desktop is to buy it from the company's online store for US$99. There is plenty of new information about the product together with some eye-catching screenshots - visit this page and follow the links that interest you. The package list is not among the information provided, but I am working on obtaining it as soon as I can. Xandros Desktop, the successor of the popular but discontinued Corel Linux is based on Debian GNU/Linux and specifically designed for desktops with ease-of-use as its main feature.

Xandros Linux: "It just works", even with Windows stuff |
Newsforge editors have succeeded in getting hold of a review copy of Xandros Linux 1.0, apparently due to be released today: "Xandros seems to be what Lindows could have been if it had stayed true to its Linux roots, both product-wise and philosophically. I like Xandros; I like the ease of use combined with common-sense security options and configurability; I like that it reaches out to Windows users without alienating the Linux community; it may just end up becoming the main distribution in my house." The Xandros web site is still keeping the release a secret, but the NewsForge review should give us an indication of what to expect from this newcomer on the desktop Linux scene. Read it all here.

This headline is from a brief announcement on the Xandros's home page. It continues: "The product will first be available in box with a manual from our Web site. Our manufacturer indicates the product should be available for shipping in the week of October 21." The news story also mentions a "release candidate" which has been shipped to beta testers a few days ago as well as a promise of extensive web site with updates with detailed product specifications coming up in the next two weeks. There is still no word on pricing nor there is any mention of whether or not the product will be available as a free download. The full announcement is here.

Xandros Beta 3 Preview |
OSNews has published an exclusive preview of Xandros OS 1.0 Beta 3, the final release of which is expected on 30 September: "This is a desktop OS, meant to be used by both Windows individual users and Windows-based corporations. The hard core geek Linux user is not what Xandros is aiming for. What I have seen so far from this beta 3b, is that this is meant to be an industrial design, carefully crafted towards people who would want to upgrade from Windows98/ME to Linux. Comparing this distro to Lycoris Build50 beta or the latest Red Hat Null beta, well, it does not look as sexy or good-looking. But it works pretty well and it compares well when it comes to productivity and overall management of the computer. Xandros people are telling me that a lot more changes are coming to the final version, and possibly, even a jump to KDE 3.x. This is a Linux distribution to watch out for, and it would straight compete with both Lycoris and Lindows. Who's going to win most Windows user hearts? Well, we will see in time." Two Interviews with Xandros President |
Xandros finally appears to be doing some serious PR work. OSNews: "Our Xandros File Manager and Xandros Networks coming out in Xandros Desktop 1.0 will be above and beyond what anyone else is offering by a long shot. We will also be making some key feature updates exclusively on Xandros Networks only for our subscribers. These services will be made available for free to Xandros customers." Read the rest here. The second one is from LinuxOrbit: "Even today, with our substantial successes, many skeptics eyes begin to glaze over when you start to talk about Linux, let alone the desktop. I'm sure there were many obituaries written about Columbus as he set sail. The more people that you have saying the Earth is not flat, the more you will be able convince to travel to a New Land. The more that make the change, the better off they all are. We hope that millions will soon set sail for Xandros." This one includes a screenshot of a Corel-like file manager. Xandros Nears Its First Release |
DesktopLinux has published a short interview with Xandros president Michael Bego and Dr Frederick Berenstein, co-chairman of Linux Global Partners (the financial backer of Xandros): "While Mandrake touts itself as the dominant desktop distribution, Bego believes Xandros is substantially more user-friendly. 'We certainly allow tweaking by savvy users,' he said, 'but Mandrake is more oriented toward hobbyist users. Our emphasis is on one-button control, and the creation of a quality Linux product that corporations won't have difficulty introducing into their environment. Lycoris is heading in a great direction, but they're primarily packaging Open Source components. Between Xandros and Corel, we've invested $32 million above and beyond that, and it shows.'" Well, it only shows if you are amongst the lucky "selected few" with access to the Xandros beta. The final release is expected in early October, according to the interview.
