About Lineox
Lineox Enterprise Linux is based on source RPM packages from which Red Hat Enterprise Linux is compiled. Lineox Enterprise Linux contains all programs included in various Red Hat Enterprise Linux variations (Advanced Server (AS), Entry/Mid Server (ES), and Workstation (WS)). It also contains programs included in separately sold Red Hat Cluster Suite and Red Hat Developer Suite. Lineox has removed and replaced all files of Red Hat Enterprise Linux which have restrictive copyright by Red Hat, Inc. Lineox has also tried to remove all user-visible references to Red Hat in Lineox Enterprise Linux. The most notable difference between Lineox Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the support options provided by Red Hat, Inc. Lineox, Inc. does not provide any support for Lineox Enterprise Linux with the base product. Lineox, Inc. however plans to provide binary package updates for Lineox Enterprise Linux as long as Red Hat, Inc. provides updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux in source package format.

Distribution Release: Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 (x86_64) |
The 64-bit edition of Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 has been released: "Lineox has released today Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 edition. Lineox has replaced some graphics files and changed or replaced some other files mainly because of trademark issues while retaining full compatibility. This release includes also updated packages. Yumex, a graphical front-end to yum package management system was added to x86_64 version because apt doesn't properly support multiple architecture packages. Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 has only i386 versions of OpenOffice.org and HelixPlayer. Also many browser plug-ins are available only as x86 versions, so Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 version has many x86 libraries." The release announcement. Download the DVD image from here: lel-x86_64-4000.iso (2,200MB). CD images are also available.

Development Release: Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 RC1 |
Lineox Enterprise Linux is a Linux distribution built from source RPMs for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Its new version 4.0 has entered a release candidate phase: "Lineox has released today the first release candidate of Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0. Lineox expects to release the final version of Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 within one week and x86_64 RC1 version later this week. Because Fedora Core 3 and Beta 2 of the product on which Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 is based were released almost simultaneously and 1216 of the 1398 packages in Beta 2 are exactly the same, Lineox encourages Fedora Core 3 users to upgrade their 'beta quality' Linux to the stable version offered by Lineox." The full release announcement. The four ISO images of Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 RC1 are available for download via BitTorrent.

Development Release: Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 Beta |
A new beta release of Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 is now available for download and testing: "Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 (LEL) beta is built from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 (RHEL) beta 2 sources. Some source files were modified by a set of scripts and the whole build process is script-based. The usage of scripts means that when the final RHEL 4.0 sources are released, the same scripts can be used to build LEL 4.0 in a very short time. The script which starts the package builds is cluster enabled, which further expedites the build speed. Lineox hopes to have the first LEL 4.0 release candidate ready and available for download from mirror sites in less than two days after RHEL 4.0 source availability. The purpose of this beta is to check that all the needed changes are made and they are made correctly." Here is the full release announcement. Download: lel4000b2_1.iso (626MB), lel4000b2_2.iso (644MB), lel4000b2_3.iso (555MB), lel4000b2_4.iso (164MB). A DVD image is also available.

Inside Lineox Linux |
DesktopLinux.com interviews Raimo Koski, the founder of Finland-based Lineox Linux, a new distribution built from RHEL source RPMs: "Many distribution makers want to do everything by themselves and their way. I have followed Red Hat most closely and found many examples where modifications, which I felt were unnecessary, actually broke things. The original RH 7.3 kernel had backported zlib code which broke zisofs and RH kernels have always been a horrible patchwork, grub still has splash image patch which breaks menucolor commands and RH hasn't patched the documentation to reflect that. I believe that Mandrake is much worse in that respect, but I haven't followed it recently." The full interview.
