About Openwall
|
Openwall GNU/*/Linux (or Owl for short) is a small security-enhanced Linux distribution for servers, appliances, and virtual appliances. Owl live CDs with remote SSH access are also good for recovering or installing systems (whether with Owl or not). Another secondary use is for operating systems and/or computer security courses, which benefit from the simple structure of Owl and from the inclusion of the complete build environment.

Distribution Release: Openwall GNU/*/Linux 3.1 |
|
Alexander Peslyak has announced the release of Openwall GNU/*/Linux 3.1 a new stable version of the project's small security-enhanced Linux distribution for servers, appliances and virtual appliances: "The Owl 3.1 stable branch forked off Owl-current in mid-2014 is finally available on our FTP mirrors, including ISO images, OpenVZ container templates, binary packages for x86_64 and i686, and full sources. This officially ends the life of Owl 3.0-stable. Also, Owl-current is not currently in a stable state that it usually happens to be in. Thus, Owl 3.1-stable is the branch that we currently intend for actual use, with Owl-current temporarily intended for development experiments only. Recent changes in Owl 3.1-stable include update to RHEL 5.11-based Linux/OpenVZ kernel along with Red Hat's fix for a local privilege escalation vulnerability on x86-64 (CVE-2014-9322). So please upgrade." Here is the brief release announcement. Download: Owl-3.0-release-i686.iso.gz (442MB), Owl-3_1-stable-20150104-x86_64.iso.gz (559MB, SHA1, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Openwall GNU/*/Linux 3.0 |
|
Openwall GNU/*/Linux 3.0 is a small security-enhanced Linux distribution for servers, appliances, and virtual appliances. Today's release of version 3.0 marks the 10-year anniversary of the project: "I am pleased to announce that we have made a new major release of Openwall GNU/*/Linux, version 3.0. The ISO images include a live system, installable packages, the installer program, as well as full source code and the build environment. This release marks roughly 10 years of our project - development started in mid-2000, and Owl 0.1-prerelease was made public in 2001. With the 3.0 release, the Owl 2.0-stable branch is formally discontinued. We intend to proceed with further development under Owl-current and to maintain the newly-created Owl 3.0-stable branch until the next release, as usual." See the full release announcement for more information and upgrade instructions. Download (SHA1): Owl-3.0-release-i686.iso.gz (442MB), Owl-3.0-release-x86_64.iso.gz (448MB).

Distribution Release: Openwall GNU/*/Linux 2.0 |

Openwall GNU/*/Linux 2.0 has been released: "After many Owl-current snapshots, Owl 2.0 release is finally out. Owl 2.0 is built around Linux kernel 2.4.32-ow1, glibc 2.3.6 (with our security enhancements), GCC 3.4.5, and recent versions of over 100 other packages. It offers binary- and package-level compatibility for most packages intended for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) and Fedora Core 3 (FC3), as well as for many FC4 packages. Additionally, Owl 2.0 uses our new installer, making installation a lot easier than it used to be for Owl 1.1 and below."
