eAR OS
eAR OS was an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring the advanced, yet simple-to-operate eAR Media Centre. Tune in to TV programs, rip CDs to hard disk in lossless FLAC quality, watch digital TV and DVDs, listen to Internet radio, view photos, or listen to music - all from within an intuitive user interface. The distribution was available in two flavours - either as a freely downloadable "Free" edition, or as a commercial "Enterprise" edition with extra features and performance enhancements.

The fourth beta of ROCK Linux 2.0.0 is out: "After the 'beta3 release' many package build errors got fixed and some packages updated. For space reasons a binary release can not yet be provided, but an ISO for x86 and PPC will be copied in the next days. There is still some work left before the stable ROCK Linux 2.0 release scheduled for the end June!" | ROCK is a distribution build kit, or in other words, a software development toolkit for building OS solutions. You can configure your personal build of ROCK and easily build your own distribution directly from source code. Most of the ROCK Linux development is done on ix86 hardware, But ROCK Linux also supports the Alpha AXP, PowerPC, Sparc32/Sparc64 and MIPS architectures.

ROCK Linux is a flexible Distribution Build Kit. It can be used for building your own Linux distributions. Version 3 of the ROCK Linux is released. From the announcement: "It took a bit over 20 months, but finally, ROCK 3 is done. Over the last 20 months, ROCK Linux has seen many changes not only in the code, but also in its aim and social relations... Creating a distribution is a complex task. ROCK makes this task a lot easier. Many changes since the last release have gone into enhancing the example distribution - Crystal ROCK - to be a good reference for what is possible." Distribution Release: ROCK Linux Live CD rev6454 |

The developers of the source-based ROCK Linux distribution have released a new live CD - a desktop edition with KDE 3.4.3, built from the current development branch of ROCK Linux: "The ROCK Linux Live CD is a full-featured, desktop-oriented target designed to operate directly from CD. The current default package selection uses the 'minimal desktop' template, which incorporates a full KDE desktop and some other applications, like MPlayer, xine, etc. Of course this package selection can be altered to fit your needs. In the background, SquashFS is used, and generic write support is provided by the LD_PRELOAD libc wrapper 'shadowfs'." More details are available on the project's live CD page. Distribution Release: ROCK Linux Live CD rev4860 |

A pair of new live CDs have been put together by the ROCK Linux development team. The most interesting part is that one of them is designed for PPC systems; as far as we know, this is the first full bootable live CD designed and tested to run on iBooks and PoweBooks. From the release announcement: "The current default package selection uses the minimal-desktop template, which incorporates a full KDE desktop and some other applications like MPlayer, xine, etc. Of course this package selection can be altered to fit your needs. In the default configuration the system takes up only about 400MB, so there's still some space left." Distribution Release: ROCK Linux 2.0.3 |

The source-based ROCK Linux project has released an update of their stable 2.0 branch. From the announcement: "This is the official announcement of the release and availability of ROCK Linux - v2.0.3. This version has been tagged from 2.0-stable branch at revision 4795 on November 14th 2004. Most important changes: all build errors have been fixed at least for the x86 architecture; Tons of updates got merged from trunk; the new 'build-bootstrap' package selection provides a small set of packages necessary to build everything else. This package selection is used for the 'reference build system' to provide cache-files and binary releases." ROCK is built from a set of bash scripts, the latest version of which can be downloaded from here: rock-src-2.0.3.tar.bz2 (1.4MB). Alternatively, several pre-built binary ISO images are also available for download.

A new release of the ROCK Linux distribution build kit is now available: "ROCK Linux 2.0.2 (codename 'wildlife') was released to the public. The release is a maintenance release - and so includes a number of security fixes and minor version updates pulled from the development tree. Due to always active work on non-x86 ports this time with full boot CD on Sparc64 (Ultra SPARC) and IBM RS/6000 (RS/6k) support! ROCK Linux 2.0.1 has been released: "Maintenance release, security and non-intrusive version updates. This release features improved compilation on other distributions (SUSE, Red Hat), updates to KDE, GNOME, Linux, OpenSSL, OpenSSH, neon, Subversion, CVS, silo, and dietlibc, and some package additions. There were also single user mode improvements, ROCK Net and ROCK Plug updates (and speed optimisations), a re-inclusion of source CD creation, and some PowerPC and SPARC fixes." The final version of ROCK Linux 2.0.0, code name "Rafaella", has been released: "Finally (yes - finally) we decided to tag 2.0.0(-final) - here at the Chemnitzer Linux Tag 2004. Binary images for x86 (desktop) are online - PowerPC and SPARC (yes - dual-bootable SPARC / SPARC64) ISOs will follow soon. Although we worked hard to make the 2.0 series stable, we cannot test all hardware combinations and still have some bugs inside the Bug tracker. Minor maintenance releases will follow in the usual Open Source release early release often cycle."
