Volumio
Volumio (formerly RaspyFi) is a Debian-based distribution originally made for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer, but later expanded to other embedded devices, including CuBox, BeagleBone Black and UDOO. It aims to fully integrate Music Player Daemon, an open-source music player server, into the current Debian releases and to optimise it for Audiophile-quality music playback. Volumio also makes it simple to play music library directly from a USB storage device or from any network-attached storage and it also enables users to listen to web-based radio stations from Spotify, Last.fm and SoundCloud. Starting in October 2014 the project no longer provided a complete Linux distribution; instead it develops Volumio as a music player application only which it makes available for various platforms. The Volumio distribution resumed development in 2016 and is available for x86 computers as well as several ARM devices.

NEW • Red Hat 9 - The Windows User's Installation Experience |
Rate this project
|
OSNews reports on a Windows user's experience with installing Red Hat Linux 9: "Perhaps I'm giving Linux a somewhat unfair review by not purchasing documentation and RTFM before I do the install, but the problems I experienced were something quite possibly not covered in the manual. Regardless, these kinds of issues need to be addressed before Linux can break into the desktop world. I would also like to point out that redrawing windows when moved seems a bit slow. Maybe it's my machine, or perhaps it's the fact that the DE's ride on top of the X Window System; I don't know. Definitely on the right track, though. Lots of software, nice desktop, pretty fonts. Red Hat is on the right track and with just a few glitch fixes and tweaks, Red Hat 9 may be ready for the consumer desktop market." The full review.

Distribution Release: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 |
 |
Red Hat has announced the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0, the latest major version of the IBM-owned distribution. Among the big ticket items in this release is an effort to confirm the integrity of the operating system with digital signatures and hashes: "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 also introduces integrity measurement architecture (IMA) digital hashes and signatures. With integrity measurement architecture, users can verify the integrity of the operating system with digital signatures and hashes. This helps to detect rogue infrastructure modifications, making it easier to limit the potential for systems to be compromised. Further supporting enterprise choice in architectures and environments across the open hybrid cloud, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 will be available on IBM Cloud and also complements the key security features and capabilities of IBM Power Systems and IBM Z systems. Pairing the security-focused hardware capabilities of IBM’s architectures with the security enhancements in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 delivers the innovation, strength and security capabilities that many organizations need in hybrid cloud computing." Development Release: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Beta |
 |
Red Hat has announced the availability of a new development release, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Beta. The new development release is built from CentOS Stream. It finishes the migration from Python 2 to Python 3. The new beta also offers smaller binaries due to link time optimization. "Link Time Optimization (LTO) is enabled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, and the system comes with a number of packages that are built with it. As a result, applications have smaller and faster binaries and allow deeper inspection of source code at compile time. This can improve GCC diagnostics for potential coding errors, such as One Definition Rule (ODR) violations. Go 1.16 brings support for the new embed package, enabling developers to bundle supporting data files into their Go programs and simplify developing with Go. With Go 1.16, modules are enabled by default making language dependencies easier to manage. Additionally, there are also several other improvements and performance optimizations. With the latest LLVM 12 toolset, developers can take advantage of fresher tooling, and compatibility with other code built with compatible versions of LLVM/Clang." Additional information is available in the company's release announcement and in the release notes. The new beta release is available through the Red Hat customer portal. |
