Lunar Linux
Lunar is a source based Linux distribution with a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, for the machine it is being installed on. Though it can take a while to do a complete Lunar installation it's worth it as it tends to be quite fast, once installed! In the beginning Lunar was a fork of Sorcerer GNU Linux (SGL). The fork occurred in late January to early February of 2002 and was originally made up of a small group of people who wanted to collaboratively develop and extend the Sorcerer technology. The original name for the project was Lunar-Penguin but the group decided to re-christen it Lunar Linux while the Lunar-Penguin name has become a sort of umbrella which the team could use if they decide to collaboratively develop something besides Lunar Linux.

CollegeLinux 2.1, code name "Jedi", has been released. What's new? "New Kernel 2.4.20; installer duly improved with error checking and supporting different hard disks, multiple linux/windows partitions and multi boot + auto scan of your hard drives (while we are a slack-based distribution the installer has been builded from scratch, not another clone); desktop managers: KDE 3.1.1 (yeah, not just 3.1, but the latest), Xfce 3.8.18 and blackbox; printers working 100% fine with CUPS; USB problems which affected some keyboards and mouse solved; Mozilla 1.3; Flash/Java enabled in both Konqueror and Mozilla..." As reported more than three weeks ago, CollegeLinux 2.5 is back: "As we started to be one of the first distribution aimed to give you a truly learning experience, once again we have tried to give you something more. That's right, a server that you can bring with you anywhere you go, and soon with the possibility to save your site pages and details on a CollegeLinux.org account. MadPenguin reviews the latest version of CollegeLinux: "When I was given the assignment to review CollegeLinux by Mad Penguin, I took the CD down, dusted it off, and grinded my way through the difficulties of the install. The install was terrible; worse than most I have seen, despite its apparent simplicity. However, I cannot remember a distribution that was more worth the time. CollegeLinux is fast, stable, looks good, and comes with automatically configured tools for most of my usual tasks. While CollegeLinux obviously needs a lot of work on the installer, it is a very useful distribution and one I will be keeping an eye on for future review at Mad Penguin." In response to the somewhat superficial short review of CollegeLinux 2.5 published yesterday by OSNews, here comes a more comprehensive review as posted by a CollegeLinux user on the distribution's forums: "[CollegeLinux 2.5] Obi-Wan is packed full of features from the box, but it can also do a lot more. I have added Slackware packages to it, compiled new files from source and installed programs off the web, and for the most part without pain. It's fast, it's stable and it's free. OSNews has published a brief review of CollegeLinux 2.5 released last week: "Overall, CollegeLinux is a pretty good starting point. However, I expect that most people who use it will need to download and install quite a bit of additional software before they would be satisfied it." Read the full review here. The long awaited CollegeLinux 2.5 has been released: "We are glad to announce the long awaited release of CollegeLinux 2.5 'Obi Wan'. Once again we did a release taking the necessary 6 months to bring something new, exclusive and never seen within the Linux community. Whilst there is a growing trend to release as often as possible, we have chosen to implement some important and innovative features and release only when there is something worth your time and bandwidth." Among the more interesting new features are a server robot which automatically installs and configures Apache, PHP, MySQL, SQLite, Webmin and PHPMyAdmin, and a slapt-get based auto-update engine integrated into Konqueror. A new CollegeLinux release, version 2.3 and code name "Darth Vader" is out: "Some new interesting features, certainly worth a try. Main changes: improved installer (fixed the lilo issues, added error checking etc.); USB hotplug, PCMCIA hotplug (plug/unplug devices for immediate recognition); file sharing via edonkey pre-configured; flash plugin gone (sorry, this will have to be installed manually due to the Macromedia license which does not consider Linux an authorised OS). OSNews interviews Professor David Costa regarding their initiative behind CollegeLinux: "The next release will bring some interesting surprises. While Dropline GNOME is already working fine on CollegeLinux 2.1, 'The Jedi', we are trying to go a mile further with a perfect integration which will allow our users to keep their packages constantly updated. In this way students will benefit from a stable and complete OS constantly updated with a click. We are also fixing some of the problems with the installer (which was created from scratch) and we take into serious account all the installation problems reported by CollegeLinux users." CollegeLinux: Learning the Linux Way |

So who is behind CollegeLinux, the new Slackware-based desktop Linux distribution (which might sound like a contradiction in terms to some people)? DesktopLinux talks to Professor David Costa, Dean of Robert Kennedy College (RKC) in Switzerland: "Slackware is -- in my opinion -- one of the best distros in terms of stability and structure. I don't think that another Red Hat-based distribution can add something relevant to the original base. We wanted to have a user friendly environment but also a learning experience for the user, being himself a student or not. CollegeLinux is a new desktop Linux distribution based on Slackware 8.1 and developed by the Robert Kennedy College in Delémont, Switzerland. It includes many enhancement over the standard Slackware distribution, including LinNet Neighborhood for easy network setup, OpenOffice.org 1.0.2, pre-installed Flash and Java plugins in Mozilla and Konqueror and many other features. The first ever release of CollegeLinux has been announced by its developers, the Robert Kennedy College in Delémont, Switzerland: "CollegeLinux is a new, stand-alone operating system based on Slackware Linux 8.1. The aim of this experimental Linux distribution is to provide to RKC students and the student population at large with an operating system which is easy to install and use and which provides an alternative to the traditional commercial operating systems ;) See the full announcement with links to screenshots.
