LG3D LiveCD
LG3D LiveCD was a bootable Linux CD incorporating Project Looking Glass, a Java-based technology that attempts to bring a richer user experience to the desktop and applications via 3D windowing and visualisation capabilities. An open source development project evolved from Sun Microsystems' Advanced Development division, the LG3D live CD was based on SLAX, but it includes extra applications and technologies, such as Firefox and Gaim, working NVIDIA graphics driver, and copy2ram support. It was also possible to run it from a 256MB flash memory device.

Beehive Linux 0.5.0 announced. Code named 'Money Shot', this is your last chance to get it for free: "This will be the *last* release free for download. Going forward Beehive will be subscription based at a cost of $60 per year for quarterly releases. Why am I doing this? Beehive has had over 70K downloads in the 14 months it's been on the grid. In all that time I have had exactly *one*, yes *one* (thank you j.p.) donation to help offset the cost of colo & bandwidth. There are mirrors yes, but that doesn't pay for the master server, bandwidth, or time." The ISO image has also been uploaded and you can get it here: beehive_linux-0.5.0.iso (665MB). In the meantime, take a look at our Beehive, Major Distributions and Top 10 Distributions pages.. The complete package list can be perused here.

About Beehive Linux
|
Our goal in creating Beehive Linux was to provide a fast, simple, secure i686 optimized Linux distribution without all the cruft and clutter. What we wanted was something that was fast to install and setup, something that didn't by default include 500 megs of stuff we didn't want or need. And something that had native ReiserFS support built in. We just wanted something better. Something tighter. Something cleaner. Beehive Linux is a distribution made by system administrators, for system administrors. It's intent is to provide fast and clean setup of workhorse servers and workstations. If you're looking for wizards and whizbang gizmos, you are in the wrong place. If you want to setup servers with the services you and/or your users need, you are in the right place. Beehive also works well as a workstation and X, E, BlackBox and KDE are included - this is not the primary focus of Beehive but hey, every admin needs a workstation as well right? Beehive Linux is not for the inexperienced, or those new to linux/*nix. Beehive Linux is for people that know what they're doing and want to get the job done as well as possible in the least amount of time.

Distribution Release: Beehive Linux 0.6.0 |
|
A new version of Beehive Linux has appeared on some mirrors: beehive_linux-0.6.0.iso (519MB). There is no news about this release anywhere on the Beehive's web site, but it is likely to be a stable release. GNOME packages which made their first appearance in the 0.5.0 release are gone again and KDE 3.0.2 is now the only desktop environment. Compiled with GCC 3.1, it uses Kernel 2.4.18 and Perl 5.8.0, but most packages are on a slightly more conservative side than was the case with most previous Beehive releases. Keep an eye on the distribution's news and updates section for official announcements. Finally, just a reminder that Beehive Linux is optimised for i686 architectures (it won't install on anything less than Pentium II) and it is designed for experienced system administrators.

Distribution Release: Beehive 0.4.4 |
|
Speaking of smaller distributions, Beehive Linux is apparently one of the more successful stories, now permanently occupying the number 6 position in our page hit ranking. Beehive has also announced a new release, version 0.4.4, after a "mismatch with the ReiserFS tools on the 0.4.3 CD image". A fix has been posted. New 0.4.3a ISO image (612MB) is now available and a brand new 0.4.4 ISO image with many updates should be up in a few days. As usual, more information on the Beehive page.
