The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, Tails 6.8, improves handling of persistent storage, updates Tor Browser, and provides a better explanation when MAC randomization fails. "When the file system of the Persistent Storage has errors, Tails now offers you to repair the file system when unlocking from the Welcome Screen. Because not all file system errors can be safely recovered this way, we wrote comprehensive documentation on how to recover data from the Persistent Storage using complementary techniques. Update Tor Browser to 13.5.6. Improve the notification when a network interface is disabled because MAC address anonymization failed. Increase the maximum waiting time to 8 minutes when unlocking the Persistent Storage before returning an error. Hide shown password while unlocking Persistent Storage." A full list of changes can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-6.8.img (1,484MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-6.8.iso (1,474MB, signature, torrent). |

Philip Müller has announced the release of Manjaro Linux 24.1.0, an updated build of the project's rolling-release distribution with separate GNOME, KDE Plasma and Xfce editions. The new release comes with GNOME 46.5, KDE Plasma 6.1 and Linux kernel 6.10: "Since we released 'Wynsdey' in May 2024, we worked hard to get the next release of Manjaro out there. We call it Xahea. The GNOME edition has received several updates to GNOME 46 series. This includes a lot of fixes and polish when GNOME 46 originally was released in March 2024. The Plasma edition comes with the latest Plasma 6.1 series 1 and KDE Gear 24.08 1. It brings exciting new improvements to your desktop. Plasma 6 hits its stride with version 6.1. While Plasma 6.0 was all about getting the migration to the underlying Qt 6 frameworks correct, 6.1 is where developers start implementing the features that will take your desktop to a new level." KaOS is a rolling release distribution which focuses on providing one desktop (KDE Plasma) and applications developed with one toolkit (Qt). The project's latest snapshot brings the Calligra office suite into the spotlight as well as an updated VirtualBox package. "More applications are now ready to use Qt6 and Frameworks 6, the big one now being Calligra. Since Calligra is again actively maintained and developed, it has returned to being the default office suite for KaOS. Another one that is now Qt6-based is Virtualbox. The UI of the installer has been updated for quite a few pages. This includes an option to choose either Calligra or LibreOffice as the preferred office suite. You will also see that the bootloader selection page and sound backend page are more integrated with Plasma 6 (through Kirigami). There also is now an option in the installer to install with the all-new filesystem bcachefs, it is still in experimental stage, but is included in the kernel build, and the needed bcachefs-tools are available in the repositories." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): KaOS-2024.09-x86_64.iso (3,552MB, signature, pkglist). |

Zorin OS is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution designed especially for newcomers to Linux. It has a Windows-like graphical user interface and many programs similar to those found in Windows. The project has announced the release of Zorin OS 17.2 which makes it easier to install new themes, customize the look of application windows, and includes updated hardware support thanks to the Linux 6.8 kernel. "We've also made it easier to install additional themes in Zorin OS by adding a link to our new Third-Party Theme Installation Guide within Zorin Appearance. This guide also includes instructions for applying custom styling to native libadwaita apps, which is available thanks to an exclusive patch to the interface library in Zorin OS 17. You now have easy access to a plethora of settings to personalise how app windows behave on the Zorin Desktop. The new “Windows” section of Zorin Appearance has been neatly organised and thoughtfully designed to simplify changing window placement behaviour, how titlebars act, and how you can move the focus between open windows." NEW • Development Release: Fedora 41 Beta |

The Fedora team have announced the release of a new development snapshot, Fedora 41 Beta. This development release removes Python 2, re-introduces the NVIDIA binary driver through the software centre, and upgrades the DNF package manager. "Although it can’t be part of Fedora Linux, we know that the NVIDIA binary driver is pragmatically essential for many people. Previously, NVIDIA driver installation had been removed from GNOME Software because it didn’t support Secure Boot, which is increasingly-often enabled by default on laptops. This change brings the option back for Fedora Workstation users with Secure Boot supported. This is good news for folks who want to use Fedora Linux for gaming and CUDA. The change also helps Fedora stay relevant for AI/LLVM workloads. In Fedora Linux 41, the DNF package management command will be updated to version 5. (DNF5 and bootc will be available on image-based Fedora variants such as Atomic desktops and Fedora IoT.) The new packages will make it simpler to build and update bootable container images based on these variants." Additional details can be found in the Fedora Magazine release announcement. Download (pkglist): Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-41_Beta-1.2.iso (2,279MB, SHA256), Fedora-Server-dvd-x86_64-41_Beta-1.2.iso (2,609MB, SHA256). |
