The Debian-based Univention Corporate Server (UCS) distribution has a new update. Version 5.2-5 introduces a few new features, including a restore option for user accounts which have been deleted. "With the latest updates for the connectors for Samba 4 and Active Directory, we have completed the planned functionality of the Recycle Bin feature of Univention Nubus on UCS. The Recycle Bin makes it possible to keep deleted objects in an intermediate storage location from which they can be restored. If a user or group is accidentally deleted, it can be fully restored from this intermediate storage. All internal technical attributes such as identifiers or password hashes are reset to their original state. The user can continue working immediately, and all connected systems retain the same technical information. With the latest errata updates, the Samba 4 Connector, which is part of the 'Active Directory-compatible Domain Controller' app, as well as the 'Active Directory Connector' for connecting to Microsoft Active Directory, have been extended with a restoration function. This can be used both with the 'tombstone' implementation that is active by default in Active Directory and with the optionally activatable Recycle Bin functionality, which serves there as intermediate storage for deleted objects." Additional information is provided in the release announcement. Download: UCS_5.2-5-amd64.iso (1,603MB, SHA512, signature, pkglist). |

The Fedora project has published a new development snapshot, Fedora 44 beta. The release introduces some key changes to the system installer and unifies the KDE Plasma experience across editions: "Goodbye Anaconda-created default network profiles - this change impacts how Anaconda populates network device profiles. Only those devices configured during installation (by boot options, kickstart or interactively in UI) become part of the final system install. This behavior change addresses some long standing issues caused by populating network profiles for all network devices. These made it difficult to correctly reconfigure devices post-install. Unified KDE Out of the Box Experience: This change introduces the post-install Plasma Setup application for all Fedora KDE variants. In the variants making use of this new setup application, the Anaconda configuration will be adjusted to disable redundant configuration stages that duplicate the functionality exposed in the setup application. KDE Plasma Login Manager: This change introduced the Plasma Login Manager (PLM) for Fedora KDE variants instead of SDDM for the default login manager." Additional information can be found in the release announcement. The CachyOS team have announced the release of a new version of its Arch-based Linux distribution. The new version places a focus on making the system installer more friendly, particularly when selecting which desktop environment to use. "First, the installer now shows animated GIF/WebP previews in the Desktop Selection to showcase each desktop environment. This is currently enabled for Plasma, GNOME, niri and COSMIC, giving users a much better idea of what to expect before making their choice. And also, added support for JPEG XL in the Desktop Selection to reduce image sizes. The Desktop Environment list has also been sorted from easy and accessible setups to more advanced ones like window managers. Cachy-Update is now enabled by default for GNOME and KDE installations. The microcode installation logic has been improved - it will now detect the hardware and install the proper microcode instead of installing both and then removing the unneeded one. The error message when the EFI partition is too small has also been improved." The release announcement lists additional changes and fixes for the new snapshot.
