ToriOS is a Debian-based distribution which is designed to work on older computers, even 32-bit machines which do not support running PAE-enabled kernels. ToriOS strives to maintain the KISS principle and uses JWM to provide a lightweight graphical user interface.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

An excellent choice for an old machine. It's super fast and very lightweight. Keep up the great work. Can't wait for the second version.

This really has made my old computer work really well. I really like the key shortcuts. They all work as I expected, and there was nothing really new to learn. Almost all the function keys do just what I expected.
The initial package selection is really minimal, and has some things most people wont like, but it is easy to install new things, and I actually like links2 for browsing wikipedia and other sites, it is fast and there is no need for adblocking!!
overall, considering the challenges of fitting a full desktop onto a CD (Lubuntu can't even do this anymore) It is great to see a Debian distro filling the gap!

Fast, simple, small, highly customizable and gave me a lot of options that I can choose to either run it on old computer that has 1GB RAM and lower. Working Live CD and installation is also a breeze with One Button Installer that came with ToriOS. The best thing about it is, I can boot it onto a system that did not enable PAE by default and it is still Linux. Thus, there is two different editions that is Debian and Ubuntu based, means you can install Debian & Ubuntu packages without a hassle.
