Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I wanted to update to vlc 2.2.6 version. Kde plasma collapse and the system does not open.

Too many unmet dependencies and broken packages -- for example, you can't install Kodi or mplayer, even with debian stretch repos added.

Might be an OK distro for noobs, but doesn't meet my desktop's needs.

Tanglu 4.0 is a non-starter. I'll admit I'm not an advanced Linux user, but I can navigate a gui install and this distro, intended for "regular users and enthusiasts", is a garden variety desktop that one would expect to work right out of the box. Here's what happened:

First, I went straight to the Install Tanglu option when I used the .iso in VirtualBox. Everything went well until I restarted. I was faced with a login screen, but had never been given an option to create a username/password. I guessed at a few, clicked on everything else I could click on, and finally decided to check the Tanglu website to see if they had a default or if I missed something. After a search of the site which I thought was sufficiently thorough to turn up the answer to such a glaring problem, I found only a couple of complaints in the user forum of others unable to log in after installation. The posts were several weeks old and remained unanswered.

Next, I chose the Start Tanglu Live option. From here I clicked on Install Tanglu. This time I was given an option in Calamares to create a username/password, which I did. After rebooting the newly installed system, I was able to log in and poke around a little bit. I saw Nibbles and LibreOffice. One of the first things I did was try to uninstall a program. I was asked for Administrator credentials. I did not have them. I realized that I couldn't do anything that required escalated privileges.

I started in Tanglu Live again and this time created an admin account before installing. When I worked my way back to the program uninstall, my admin credentials didn't work. The admin account was still there, but it apparently wasn't able to perform root tasks. The user was also an admin account, but couldn't perform as Administrator. At that point, I gave up. Nothing I saw in the Live environment made me feel it was worth pursuing further and this isn't a distro I'd want to spend more time figuring out how to use than using it.
