DistroWatch.com: Oracle Solaris

Oracle Solaris

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Solaris is a computer operating system, the proprietary Unix variant developed by Sun Microsystems. Early versions, based on BSD UNIX, were called SunOS. The shift to a System V code base in SunOS 5 was marked by changing the name to Solaris 2. Earlier versions were retroactively named Solaris 1.x. After version 2.6, Sun dropped the "2." from the name. Solaris consists of the SunOS UNIX base operating system plus a graphical user environment. Solaris is written in a platform-independent manner and is available for SPARC and x86 processors (including x86_64). Starting from version 10, the Solaris licence changed and the product was distributed free of charge for any system or purpose, but after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle in 2009, the product is once again proprietary with a restrictive licence.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Nice and stable Gnome 2 desktop still supported in 2017

after adding the 3rd party publisher localhost11
( Development Repository of SFE IPS Packages built for Solaris 11)
you can install Mplayer,SMplayer ( for MP4) and VLC.( for MP3)

for youtube-dl you can download the tar.gz file from the youtube-dl website, extract and just run ./youtube-dl from the download folder

but you are still stuck with Firefox ESR 31.8.0 as only browser
Qupzilla can be installed, but crashes and is not usable

On a couple desktop installs, audio defaulted to wrong device (audiohd#0), to switch the default to audiohd#1 (to have sound in Firefox)
remove existing links
# rm /dev/audio
# rm /dev/audioctl
# rm /dev/dsp
create new
# ln -s /dev/sound/1 /dev/audio
# ln -s /dev/sound/1ctl /dev/audioctl
# ln -s /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp

to see settings before/after change use
$ ls -l /dev/audio
$ ls -l /dev/audioctl
$ ls -l /dev/dsp
to see available options
$ cat /dev/sndstat
$ ls /dev/sound

another issue is that any modern wireless cards (PCI or USB) that I have tried don't work,
only an older laptop card did, so you may be stuck with Ethernet only
