Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've been using Salix since the beginning of 2010 (found salix in late 2009) and mostly used the XFCE edition, but have tried all editions. I use 14.1 on desktop and 14.2 on laptop and servers. I try a lot of other distributions and i never find a distribution that i would like to change to.

Pros:
* Very stable
* One application per task philosophy
* No systemd
* Very fast to install
* Nice look and not bloated.

Cons:
* Not much

Overall Impressions:
For me this is the best Linux distribution and i don't think i ever gonna change to another distribution.
I'm very happy that i found Salix

I've been using Salix since 2011 and have gone through several versions (beginning with 13.1.2), with a variety of DEs: Xfce, LXDE, MATE, Fluxbox and Openbox. I'm currently running ver. 14.2 Xfce. Salix's target audience is "lazy Slackers" and it is designed to be both simple and easy to use.

Pros:

-- Based on Slackware; it is fully backwards-compatible with its parent distro

-- Very stable and predictable (like Slackware); plus it includes user-friendly extra features such as: package management with automatic dependency resolution (via Gslapt, the GUI version of slapt-get); a codecs installer; LILO setup; an update notifier

-- Also has Sourcery, a graphical frontend to slapt-src, a utility to build and install packages from source using SlackBuilds

-- For new users, there is a Salix Startup Guide and a Wiki

-- The User Forum is excellent, with helpful and knowledgeable members. The lead developeris an active forum participant and personally responds to many users' posts

-- Has both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures available

-- Has a "one application per task" philosophy

-- No systemd

Cons:

-- (This is nitpicking but I feel like I must list something here). The installer is text-based and could intimidate total beginners. That said, if you will take time to carefully read the instructions / prompts, it is understandable and predictable. It has never failed me, and it is fast. Since I found the installer's partitioning steps rather complicated, I adopted the workaround of preparing my target partitions beforehand with Gparted

Overall Impressions:

I can't remember exactly how I discovered Salix OS, but I'm grateful that I did. I think that Salix is a hidden gem in the Linux ecosystem and I wish more people knew about it.

Excellent distro based on rock solid Slackware. Salix offers many pre build binaries from Slackbuilds.org and other sources, it more than doubles the amount of binary packages available for Slackware. The Salix team maintains backwards compatibility with Slackware so even Slack users can benefit by using Salix repos. Team is quick to respond to updates, and package requests from community. Forum is active and you can get responses directly from the developers.

Use this as an into to Slackware or just continue using because it is a great little distro on its own!
