Last Update: 2017-06-27 22:20 UTC

Q4OS is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution designed to offer classic-style user interface (Trinity) and simple accessories, and to serve stable APIs for complex third-party applications, such as Google Chrome, VirtualBox and development tools. The system is also very useful for virtual cloud environments due to its very low hardware requirements.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have been using Q4os since the beginning of the year on an old Dell latitude D610 an must say that it works wonders on this
laptop! I've tried about every so called lite weight Linux OS out their an this is by far the best of the bunch! Also their forum seems to work very well with the posts that I've read,They seem helpful an rather quick to help out. I think more of Your readers would benefit hearing alittle more about this great os.
Thanks for Your time

I used versions earlier 1.8.5 later then 0.5.29, and there is a lot of installation problems, and in case people havn't notice, there is a lot of versions, and that is beacuse it is very buggy, and the revision was needed to fix them. have used a lot of them and a lot of them have one fault or another, I dare say I need ti do as much work to get it all working as install Debian and installing Trinity from its Pearson Computing repo. So there is not much point as using this distro to save time in having a Trinity desktop. Perhaps 1.8.5 is better, but I certainly will not try it again until a proper version 2 is out.

There is also the question of no suppport forum and or mailing list, so where do I get support? Are they trying to sell you the paid support option?, How do we know about security updates? Should One just rely on the Debian one, since this distro is essentially Debian stable plus Trinity? Where is the package information on the web site? What version of the Trinity is it using, R14.0.4 or ?

I question whay so many people say positive things about this distro, either becasue they are newbies who do not know any better, or they is somethign else going on.

I strongly urge people to wait until a stable version 2 to give it a try.

I was searching for a special distro that I was not able to find for years. It should have the following properties:

-Debian or Ubuntu (because of the big software repository and the apt-get mechanics)
-Lightweigt and fast
-No pizza con tutti. I need an OS, not a software collection.

Windows is shipped without word, CAD 3D and so on. Too much software means too much services working in the background without ever needing them. I never could understand why nearly all distros do have OpenOffice, all open source databases, multimedia software on board! Q4OS's ISO file 1.8.5 is 315MB! That's great!!! The installation routine does not download tons of data during installation.
I decide which software should enter my Windows, and it's my decision which software will find its way on Linux, as well.

So Q4OS is perfect for me. Beside the debian way of installing, it offers an all automatic installation routine (if you like). I test it in VirtualBox and would like to use it as a Digital Audio Workstation.

By the way, I am no newbie, I work professionally with Oracle databases and Unix servers (did everything in the korn shell environment) since 1997. At home I use different Debian based distros and ... of course Windows :-)
Q4OS1.8.5 uses the Trinity desktop (a lightweight KDE desktop fork). I felt comfortably right from the beginning.

But I will check the system and if something negative is striking me I will post it here ...
