DistroWatch.com: Puppy Linux

Puppy Linux

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 25 (398), 6 months: 25 (368), 3 months: 22 (389), 4 weeks: 20 (474), 1 week: 32 (378)

Average visitor rating: 9.33/10 from 30 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have been using Puppy for about 5 years. ArtfulPup is a nice updated version, and as useful to me as ever.

One Con: The mouse is rather sluggish. With Tahr and Slacko I set the mouse sensitivity on 4 and 2 (not 2 and 4 as out of the box) and all is well. With Artful, I can set it on the highest it will go and still have to lift the mouse up a time or two to get where I am going (like with a toy car: "vroom, vroom").

I have used Puppy Linux since version two. These are my general thoughts on the distro(s):

(+) Puppy Linux comes with a lot of functionality out of the box. I have used it in the past as my main operating system without installing any additional software.

(+) I've found it to be fast on a netbook from 2005 that could not cope with other distros.

(+) While arguably not secure (see comment below about root), Tahrpup appears to be fairly stable and has the ability to download updates which patch the system.

(-) Puppy Linux runs as root. While Tahrpup has the ability to run Internet applications (ie. browser) as non-root, I have borked the system a few times by accidentally deleting files. That said, Puppy is very easy to get back up and running. (I can reinstall a new system in less than ten minutes.)

(-) While Tahrpup can use software from the Ubuntu repositories, not all software in the repositories works. For example, I was unable to get a few games working due to missing libraries. But then again, one of Puppy Linux's philosophies is to be lightweight - so long as it isn't taken out of its niche, it does a respectful job.

(-) The barking sound. This might sound trivial but I cannot stand the sound of a dog barking when I boot up Puppy Linux. Yes, the sound file can be changed. I think there should be an option in the setup to turn on or off sound at startup.

Overall: I would recommend Puppy Linux Tahrpup as a portable distro or for computers that have limited hard drive space.
