DistroWatch.com: OpenELEC

OpenELEC

Last Update: 2017-06-04 11:57 UTC

OpenELEC is a Linux-based embedded operating system built specifically to run Kodi, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC is to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device one might have attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky box. Instead of having to manage a full operating system, configure it and install the packages required to turn it into a hybrid media center, OpenELEC is designed to be simple to install, manage and use, making it more like running a set-top box than a full-blown computer.

Couldn't make either this or libreelec work. Same thing in each case, flickering screen as soon as Kodi was configured, no mouse or keyboard. Gave up and went to archbang, in which everything works just fine. Well, after some difficulties with grub, see review of archbang.

I use both OpenELEC and LibreELEC and they work perfectly on my Dell Computer with Duo core 3.00Mghz with 8 Gigs of Ram. I was surprised to see that upgrading from within the system was quick and easy. My Dell normally runs Windows 7 and Ubuntu Mate in a dual boot, so I put OpenELEC on a 16 GB thumbdrive and I insert it in any USB port. This instantly turns my computer into a dedicated home media box that I use a lot when I want to play my Movies; Music; Pictures; etc. I highly recommend using the thumbdrive trick so that you can use the computer for other normal things like email; internet; printing; etc. Kodi still has hundreds of legal addons that are unique; entertaining; and free.
