Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This is a beautiful and fast version of Puppy. I used and loved it for a long time. Enlightenment desktop looks wonderful. As I cannot get Quirky to install, with lots of errors, I am going to install Macpup again!

Of all the PUPPY flavors MACPUP was the supreme choice, and still is a good choice. MACPUP was my everyday operating system for quite awhile. I has run good on any computer I have tried it on. MACPUP is very stable to run and be used to fix other systems that may be broken. I still keep a cd copy for that purpose. The E17 desktop is fun to use as it has many theme options. E17 seems to run better on MACPUP than it did on BODHI.
It runs very well from a thumbdrive and you can use a small capacity drive too.
MACPUP 550 is an older PUPPY and could use an update, as long as an update won't mess up an already good thing. Don't get me wrong MACPUP is still a very good choice for even very old units that need non-pae kernels.
There are quite a few other releases that you can download to suit your computer's requirements.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED YOU GIVE THIS A TRY ON A THUMBDRIVE.

I just came upon this Macpup 5.5.0. w / enlightenment! What a great find!
I had previously used the search function within Distrowatch to list the Linux options that included Enlightenment as a desktop envirnonment, Macpup was not among those options?
In restrospect, I believe that omission might be due to Macpup not being an 'active' distribution? That truly isToo bad!
I've been through most of the distro's offering Enlightenment as default and at least as many that can become 'Enlightened' via their Package management options (like Synaptic). None of those were as appealing as this Macpup appears to be.
What I have encountered in my attempt to load the Macpup to my hard drive to make it resident in my notebook is the obvious bias to keep everything in RAM. Fair enough, such was declared in the documentation. BUT, with this being such a slick distro, why wouldn't a user want to have this resident in their computer?

My thanks to Mr. B. Kauler and any others involved in making this Macpup 550 available. Even if I find I am NOT able to get it into my Hard drive to use locally, it has shown me that even as much as I prefer Enlightenment (because of it's ease over all other d/e's to create mulitple customized virtual desktops) as the d/e, that improvements/enhancements can improve even the existing enlightenment (e21.7).

Cheers,

S Nail
