Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

After struggling for years to get Ubuntu Studio to do anything remotely useful for music production I tried KXStudio and it just worked. Refreshing to spend time productively. I have now transferred all music production from PC; keeping PC software running through different versions of windows since XP was getting problematic.

Ardour and associated packages seem to be a very worthy replacement for windows based DAWs, it just takes a but of time to learn and the results are compatible but not the same (don't listen to PC produced music with nostalgia, its not better, its just different).

Office applications, genealogy, photo editing, browsing etc work well too and there's plenty of software choice.

Slainte mhath!

Hello everyone
Well I use KXStudio as a recording studio (that's the point ??? I guess)
This is a very very good distro, I have also tried Linux Studio, but well I had some problems with JACK that crashed randomly.
I has only 1 pro with KXStudio the day I installed it, then I think I did a mistake @ this time.
If you pley musik, you can use this very good KXStudio

Best regards to you all

Still needs quite a bit of work. The install medium is so-so. It works, after all, but not without crashing at the precise point when all it has to do is simply shutdown. Nevertheless, the installation worked, I was able to boot. On the first login a initialisation routine showed up and suggested that I should reset all options. I certainly would have loved to do so, unfortunately the screen resolution was still tuned to 640x480 and I couldn't access (nor see) the control buttons. One can however restart this routine from menu, so not that big a deal.
- no pulse audio. This is the biggest pro imaginable! Thumbs up!
- as a direct result: JACK indeed works. Not just the dummy daemon, but the real thing. This was the first time I ever witnessed any such thing happening. I never would have thought that possible.
Of course, by "it works" I mean it just crashes now and then, but occasionally it really does what it is supposed to do.
- Claudia. Claudia is a dream. I would marry her. If only she agreed.
- Rosegarden. When all else fails, Rosegarden is still running.

- KDE. Many things in KDE are quite messy or convulsively so-totally-different-from-windows like window control buttons on the left side. Or just crappy like Dolphin for instance, unable to do a simple file search without prompting "invalid protocol", which apparently persists for the last two years without anybody caring to fix it.
- Banshee? Really? o.O
- KXStudio comes with tons of software a lot of which simply doesn't work. MuSe is THE leading highly functional error message generator... I guess? Ardour just the same. LMMS forgets its own preferences and sometimes gets lazy, taking 10 seconds to playback 1 second worth of music data.

I tried to setup a music studio under Linux to do some private and not very ambitious composing. This was supposed to be fun. I realize one has to master in computer science to become a mediocre musician, so I guess I quit.
