Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Very nice distro. Nice set of applications fast and stable.

I installed this purely to do audio and video work. Great set of apps and works really well.

Everything for free! Unbelievable!

If you want cutting edge download Manjaro etc, this does exactly what they describe no BS it just works.

And you still have the added benefit of libre office if you need to do notes etc, Thunderbird for email, a bit torrent package and k3b for burning discs.Audacity sound editor is standard Kdenlive video production.

All said and done it has everything to do Audio and Video editing and then burn to disc.

The distro works smooth and the audio setup is very well done. You get Jack, Alsa or Pulseaudio or all of them and bridge them when needed. MIDI and OSC hardware will work well and the audio tools are carefully selected and plenty. They are updated to the latest version through the distro's special repositories. A low latency kernel is installed to cope with real-time audio latency issues. Mind that it is based on 3.13 kernel version so a lot of modern hardware (not audio-related) may not be supported, I had not such problems but my hardware comes from the year 2010.

Non-audio software is not very up-to-date, since it is still stuck to Ubuntu 14.04. It still gets regular security updates though.

If a newer package is needed for a program, the user has to ppa its repository to get the latest version updates, for example firefox, libreoffice, etc. An inconvenience, but if your main work-flow is audio-related not really to worry about, since major programs will still run well in this ubuntu 14.04 spin, if you install them from a .deb package instead of apt-get.

A different issue, at least for me, is that it is a one-man-show distribution. What worries me lately, is that if the person looses interest, I may end up with an unmaintained system. Of course this is not specific to kxstudio, it goes for all small community projects. If you want to use it for audio production it will do the work, but only up until the maintainer will decide to. I am guessing that the reason it is still based on 14.04 is because of lack of time or resources of the maintainer.

All that considered, it is a topic centric distribution that delivers what it promises and can still be used as a general purpose computer. I hope the community around it grows.
