DistroWatch.com: Korora Project

Korora Project

Last Update: 2017-09-21 07:27 UTC

Korora was born out of a desire to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. The main goal of Korora is to provide a complete, easy-to-use system for general computing. Originally based on Gentoo Linux in 2005, Korora was re-born in 2010 as a Fedora Remix with tweaks and extras to make the system "just work" out of the box.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Korora is one of the best Linux distros nowadays, it seems to be very stable, easy for new linux users, always have the newer stable version of the Linux kernel, have a good and useful set of softwares installed, mainly all the important media codecs. Korora is a good option for new computers/laptops because it is compatible with the most of new hardware and have a excellent performance on it.

The only one problem I found on Korora is the delay to recognize plug and play devices like pen drives/external drives.

I recommend the “Cinnamon” or “XFCE” versions of Korora, I don’t tried other versions.

I can be short on Korora, because my experience with "the-latest-and-the-greatest" was not so pleasant. I installed it in a multiboot environment, and that wasn't exactly a good idea. First the installer: very confusing, unclear, and you have to be an expert to put Korora on your harddisk. Second of all it didn't asked me to where to install the bootloader. It just overwrote the already present bootloader from another distro (Linux Mint).

When I finally managed it to install Korora, it did work, but run into a load of problems. Such as having problems to install software, because my user account was "not in wheel". I tried to get my acccount into the sudoers file, but the given commando's in the terminal didn't do what they supposed to do. Finally, after some struggling to get me into the sudoers file, I decided to leave it to that and restarted my computer to work further in another distro.

Well... Korora obviously did something with the other distro's while installing itself, because suddenly the other distro's didn't start up because of a kernel panic. Right before installing Korora there was nothing wrong and all distro's booted up iwithout any problems. Thank God I had freshly made images of the other distro's, so I got them back with CloneZilla. But that didn't solve any problems, because the kernel panics were still there. In the end I had to format my entire harddisk and start over again. I was very angry about that...

I'm an experienced Linux user for a long time, and I've never seen such behaviour before. Korora probably made alterations in the way it could read partitions and swap for itself, but left the other distro's in a lot of mess. What a turnoff. For me never Korora again. Unless you want to waste your time on repairing stuff.

If you want Korora, never use it in a multiboot environment with other Linux distro's, because you could end up in a lot of trouble and frustrations. As I figured out the hard way.

Fedora 26 is already great, but Korora 26 takes a lot of work during the installation. Very good!
