KaOS

Last Update: 2017-09-02 23:36 UTC

KaOS is a desktop Linux distribution that features the latest version of the KDE desktop environment, the Calligra office suite, and other popular software applications that use the Qt toolkit. It was inspired by Arch Linux, but the developers build their own packages which are available from in-house repositories. KaOS employs a rolling-release development model and is built exclusively for 64-bit computer systems.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

It works in an excellent way, very well optimized and with the latest updates to the day, both the system and applications

Installation from DVD went fine. Runs pretty smooth and fast on my very old Pentium D 3.0 GHz with 4 Gb RAM (one of the very first 64bit machines). Great looks (if you like modern). Midna theme is nice. Updating software is as easy as with Mint.

However, for daily work not suitable yet. My Private Internet Access VPN does not connect (runs fine on Mint). Unable to install my modern HP Officejet (runs fine on Mint). SABNZBd can not be installed.

Debian based distro's still have an advantage when you want to use popular software outside repositories. But KaOS has a lot of potential in my opinion.

For now I stick with Mint...

1. Partitioning during installation is too simplistic (hint: pls, check opensuse tumbleweed)
Could not figure out how to reuse my existing /home and create only /boot, / and swap.
While trying to use ext4, I had crashed the installer. QA anyone?

2. First impression is sometime the last impression - panel on the screen's right side?
(that I could change)
Dolphin toolbar icons on the left side?
(this I could NOT change)

3. OK theme and icons (Minda/Midna?), but I am used to cleaner Breeze, already.

4. System HW utilization (i7/6700HQ) much higher than KDE Mint, or Suse

5. Qupzilla browser? Really? Opera would be more contemporary. But it would need some
work, could not install it solo, only in a group "internet".

Summary:
too much of the bleeding edge, aimed at the wrong direction (leftright).
Kind of Unity's window control on the left side. Original? Perhaps. Stupid? Absolutely!

I would kindly suggest to the graphic layout/system engineer to take an elementary and/or basic class or at least a workshop in design of the user interface (UI).
Bye.
