Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

gNewSense has impressed me, it is super lightweight - only 160mb's from cold boot, 300mb's while browsing the web, it comes with iceweasel browser which is quite old but works, I installed NetSurf as that is even lighter and is also free and opensource. gNewSense has that GNOME look that is very popular, obviously its older software but it still looks very well polished and has all the bells and whistles/animations/settings/configs.

Upon installation you will find a multitude of applications/software to keep the standard users more than happy. Some things did need tweaking - I had to use nano to edit and mount my swap partition as the install did detect my swap but did'nt mount it (do not panic, it is very easy to do, there are lots of documents on the web to assist you with your prefered method). Then when you "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" you will get a few lines in bash that tell you to uncomment a specific mirror, you do this via the "Software Settings" GUI application, it lists available mirrors, one of which causes conflicts, uncomment - done. You can now "sudo etc etc" with no issue.

Lastly, gNEwSense is an ethical distro and one thats promoted by FSF, it has no nonfree proprietry software, which simply means IRL your wifi may not work - not really the end of the world. Most importantly there is NO systemd, only sysv which is light and fast.

gNewSense IMO should be more popular, its snappy and light but looks the part. 10/10!

Wonderful distro all up : comprehensive, fast, refined .....
I just had to do a little command-line stuff to get korganizer to work, after it was downloaded and installed.
At first, it didn't show up. But yeah, over all - very good :))

Released three years after the Debian Wheezy it is based on. The user would have to add a a third party repository to get an up to date browser and to keep it up to date with apt-get. Icecat binaries won't run on this older base. I couldn't get sudo to work even though I added my user to adm and used visudo to make adm use sudo. Having a fully free distro is noble, but those who want a Debian base may be better off to try GNUinos which is fully free and is based on the Devuan offshoot of Debian.
