GeckoLinux

Last Update: 2016-12-20 17:15 UTC

GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The distribution features many desktop editions which can be installed from live discs. Some patent encumbered open source software is included in GeckoLinux which is not available in the default installation of openSUSE. Special attention has been given to the quality of the font rendering. GeckoLinux provides two main editions, Static (which is based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Easily my favourite distro. Its OpenSUSE but for someone who wants no fuss on installation.

YaST is a blast. The DE's are just beautiful and work very well on rolling release. Packed with features/programmes.

Have not yet found any issues. Pretty sure Gecko will curb my distrohopping for a long time.

Keep up the greatness, Devs.

Using LXQt is very enjoyable with Gecko, I installed the rolling release and found it to be very stable.

Installation is very easy and stuff just works!

If you are looking for an easy OpenSUSE experience and stability then Gecko is what you need.

Side note; yast2 is a little confusing but thats my fault as I have never used it before.

Used Manjaro for about a year without any issues then both my laptop and desktop crashed due to a update issue on Manjaro....went distro hopping and saw GECKO rolling and decided to give it a spin...so far so good . I love the cinnamon desktop so that was a huge selling point for me and like Manjaro this is a rolling release that was also a huge plus. I've never used Opensuse before so this is a learning curve for me and so far I find it pretty straight forward. I don't know how others feel about ARCH but if your tired of crashes and bad updates and still want a rolling release I believe you have found a great one with Gecko.

PROS: (1) WAS EASY TO SET UP AND CUSTOMIZE....
(2) IS A ROLLING RELEASE
(3) NOT BASED ON ARCH

CONS: (1) DON'T LIKE HAVING TO ENTER A PASSWORD EVERY TIME I TURN MY COMPUTER ON. CAN'T FIND THE SETTING FOR AUTO LOGIN SO I DON'T HAVE TO TYPE THE PASSWORD IN EVERY TIME.
