Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have been running Mint for the longest time but elementary was a very interesting choice so i decided to give it a go.
I have been impressed. The desktop is gorgeous the layout and the icons are clean and polished. But that stopped right there.
I have a regular hardware setup nothing exotic.Intel i3 on an old Asus board with 8GRam a Radeon that is like 8 yrs old and wireless keyboard and mouse.(Logitech)
Upon booting my keyboard would not work until i restarted the system few times and turn the keyboard on and off
I was shocked that the "curated selection of bundled software" is almost inexistent. I mean i am against bloating but this is really sparse to say it mildly.
I said ok will fire up the software manager and install some, i was wrong. I could not open the AppCenter for the life of me. It would just bounce few times then nothing. The terminal wouldn't open either so couldn't install anything.
After this this system would be entering in a sort of frozen state where i would try clicking on any menu but would not open.
Applications, clock ...nothing. Reboot came to my rescue again.
I started by listing my hardware setup just to highlight that this was a really average machine that should have worked fine with Elementary

It's pretty sad. I mean i did like the attempt but this is not a usable OS by any means.

Pros: The look, the desktop, the icons, the "just different" approach
Cons: Sluggish, selection of software could be better,

This is the only distro where you feel like every detail has been taken care of. It also implements some simple practices that improve security. The icon theme, unlike most of the flat ones, is very diverse. Every icon has it's personality and something that makes it unique and identifiable.

The usability is a little strange in the beginning, especially if you came from GNOME or Unity. When it comes to resources, it loads most commonly used applications to RAM, so they open instantly. That's a good purpose for unused RAM.

I'm a digital artist and this is my production system. Happy to report my applications work fine.

I had to update/upgrade first and foremost in order for some of the changes I made as far as installing apps got commited. So if you are installing from scratch, run sudo apt-get update/ sudo apt-get upgrade as many times as it takes to get the system up to date. After that, the package manager should start working.

I also suggest installing elementary-tweaks (google it) this will allow you among other things to add the traditional windows upper-right Windows control buttons: Minimize, Maximize, Close

This is much more stable than the Linux-Budgie offerings, which stylistically I would compare this distro to. Nice graphics, plank + Gnome Applications gives you 2 ways to do anything you need to do. Good fonts/graphics with no adjustments necessary.

Its based on ubuntu so you have all the benefits there. A good source of applications that you can install in a snap.

Firefox is easy enough to install from the package manager. (once you have fully updated the system and perhaps done a reboot of the system) I would accept the default Midori browser but wanted to synch my bookmarks with XMarks for firefox.

If I could think of a drawback, I would mention it but right now it is near the top of my list of favorite distros. My other distro right now is Debian, which also is very stable but requires some work to get it stylistically up to snuff with something like this distro.
