DistroWatch.com: Bodhi Linux

Bodhi Linux

Last Update: 2017-02-18 09:24 UTC

Bodhi Linux is an elegant and lightweight Ubuntu-based distribution featuring Moksha, an Enlightenment-17-based desktop environment. The project takes a decidedly minimalist approach by offering modularity, high levels of customisation, and choice of themes. In addition to basic 32- and 64-bit systems, Bodhi maintains designated ISO images for Chromebooks and legacy machines. By default Bodhi has only five pre-installed applications: Midori, Terminology, PCManFM, ePhoto, and ePad. Additional software is available via AppCenter, a web-based software installation tool.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Awesome OS in every way possible

It's fast, simple and easy to Install since It's Ubuntu-based Distro meaning the Installation is the same.

I would recommend this over Ubuntu because of it's "Windows like look"

I prefer the new DE over the old one. Average distro though and nothing noteworthy.

Version 4.1 is completely better:
I've been watching Bodhi ever since version 2, but up until this version, 4.1, it hasn't been stable/reliable. But version 4.1 is finally a version you can install, and consider seriously as the distro for your netbook or other computer.

Nice things about Bodhi:
* The look, design and feel are WONDERFUL - a refreshing change from other boring desktops. and it does so without becoming slow.
* Enlightenment desktop that has been fixed/debugged (renamed Moksha),
* Configuration items are almost all in the same place, with a slider to select the subsections and with everything listed underneath. (except, oddly, auto-hide for the "shelf" (taskbar)... that one you'll have to search for elsewhere in the menu structure.
* Low memory requirements: 128MB minimum, 512MB recommended.
* installing apps is as easy as visiting their website, selecting something, and voilà! easier to use than most package installers.

Cons or issues:
* Live takes 3 times longer to load than installed version
* small team - help is good in the forums. but more transparency would be more reassuring to end-users
* sudo apt install programs don't get added in the correct location in the menus, and no tool to edit that.
* while most configuration and preferences are in one place, oddly enough they've left some out, which could easily have been included there: such as the taskbar ("shelf") configuration (and you can't configure it by right-clicking in the taskbar itself).
* getting your wifi to connect might be an issue (as for many netbooks) - but it may be just something being debugged for certain wifi asics so I don't want to be too harsh.
* desktop cick for menu still opens it to the right near the right side of the screen. hover to touch the right edge and it will move over though.
Not perfect, some work left to be done.
