Black Lab Linux (formerly OS4 OpenLinux) is a user-friendly, commercial desktop and server Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. Some of its most interesting features include support for popular browser plugins, addition of packages for multimedia production, content creation and software development, and an innovative desktop layout based on GNOME Shell. Separate editions with KDE and Xfce desktops are also available. The company behind the distribution also sells a desktop mini-system with Black Lab Linux pre-installed.

Table Notes and Explanations
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kde-workspace" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This distro is truly one of the best in a long time. Fully loaded for all my needs. I'm a simple user, limited gamer, no programming of any type, basic internet browser type, like music and youtube and topo maps. I layer topo maps on Google Earth and transfer to my Garmin GPS. Also like to play with the OpenStreets project. A little Facebook and Google Groups. Only thing I could see as a possible improvement would be the time to install, it took me 1.5 hours. Now, I'm not programmer smart; I selected the basic install, update & third party while doing the install, and that could make all the difference in the world.

As stated in an earlier review. The IoT version requires a username and password to even use it.
I checked Black Labs website and found no useful information pointing to the login account. The forum for Black Lab is utterly useless..

As for the Enterprise version.. If you don't choose to encrypt your install it will literary take 18 hours to install the OS.. 16Gigs of RAM on a 3.16Ghz Intel Duo core Processor 500Gb Hard drive. Slowest install process I have ever seen... And we have attempted it several times to verify. We can install Linux Mint in under 20 minutes.

If you choose to install with encryption then it has either hung or is still installing/encrypting.. its been over 24 hours and the install still isn't finished....

Sorry... but I wish I could say better for the Distro... but not this time..
