NEW • Development Release: Linux Deepin 12.12 RC |
The release candidate of Linux Deepin 12.12, a popular Chinese community distribution, has been released for testing and feedback. According to the release announcement (in Chinese), since the beta version the development work has revolved around addressing bug reports as well as suggestions of improvements. As a result, the release candidate highlights stability and usability. Support for dual monitors is added, and the system tray now facilitates advanced power management. A user can compress one or more files on the desktop by simply right-clicking on them. The software center now allows for much easier online package upgrading, e.g., via automatic or manual selection of mirror servers. The Deepin media player has been upgraded so that DVD with playback menu options and VCD are supported. Certain applications like Skype and WPS for Linux are now installed by default. Users with previous versions are not encouraged to upgrade to the candidate; fresh installation is recommended instead. Currently only Chinese Simplified ISO images are available for download: deepin_12.12_zh-hans_rc_amd64.iso (1121MB, MD5). |

NEW • Distribution Release: SuperX 2.0 |
Wrishiraj Kaushik has announced the release of SuperX 2.0, an Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution with KDE 4.10.2: "This is SuperX 2.0, code-named 'Darwin'. It comes with Linux kernel 3.2 and KDE 4.10.2 by default. For those who want newer kernels, they are available in the repository. SuperX 2.0 is a whole new release of SuperX which differs fundamentally from the 1.x releases. Starting from SuperX 2.0 we are going our own way, making a diversion from our upstream distribution. We still use the Ubuntu code base but from this release we only use the LTS versions and development is done on its solid foundation. But unlike other solid, stability-concerned Linux operating systems, we provide the latest userland software like LibreOffice 4 and KDE 4.10. Starting from Darwin, we are keeping our core stable but will provide latest and greatest applications." Read the rest of the release announcement for more information, screenshots and known issues. NEW • Distribution Release: IPFire 2.13 Core 68 |
Michael Tremer has announced the release of IPFire 2.13 Core 68, a minor bug-fix update of the specialist distribution for firewalls and routers: "Today the IPFire development team released the 68th Core update for IPFire 2. This update brings various bug fixes and minor enhancements. The strongSwan team released version 5.0.4 which fixes an authentication bypass for certificates that use Elliptic Curves. As we don't use them in IPFire by default, this is not too serious an issue, but we still updated the strongSwan package. The update also contains some changes that fix unstable IPsec connections, a minority of users was experiencing. Since Core Update 65, disabling OpenVPN roadwarrior connections had no effect, so that users could still connect. This has also been fixed with this release. The web user interface comes with a new status bar which now has a cleaner design and provides more information." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. NEW • Development Release: gNewSense 3.0 Beta 1 |
Sam Geeraerts has announced the availability of the initial beta release of gNewSense 3.0. gNewSense is a Debian-based distribution sponsored by Free Software Foundation and built strictly from free ("libre") software only. This version is based on Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" (with GNOME 2). From the release announcement: "The beta release of gNewSense 3.0 (code name 'Parkes') is available for download. There are netboot images for all 3 architectures and a live CD for i386. I'd like some feedback on that first before I spend time on creating a live CD for amd64. I also hope to resolve some of the following issues with the live CD shortly: the live installer (which can be started with the icon on the live desktop) fails at step 'Configure the package manager', the text and GUI install (started from the boot menu) do work; you get an i486 kernel by default, you can install the i686 kernel like any other package once you've booted the system; boot menu items Memtest86+ and Help fall off the bottom of the screen...." NEW • Distribution Release: Hybryde Linux 13.04 |
Olivier Larrieu has announced the release of Hybryde Linux 13.04, a rather unusual distribution which ships with 11 desktop user interfaces (Enlightenment, GNOME 2, GNOME 3, KDE, LXDE, Openbox, Unity, FVWM, Xfce, MATE and Cinnamon) and which provides a way to seamlessly switch between them without a need to restart the X window system. This it does so via a default home-made desktop called HY-D-V1: "After more than five months, we have a new concept: HY-D-V1 which is a new paradigm for the desktop. It works with web technologies. This new version, Hybryde 'Fusion', includes HY-D-V1 which has been created for artists and users who want to transform their desktop into an artistic tool and for those who want to play with graphic effects. That's because Linux users are not merely professionals and because computers are not reserved to business use alone."
