Development Release: VENENUX GNU/Linux 0.8 RC2 |
| VENENUX GNU/Linux is a Debian-based community distribution developed in South America and designed for Spanish-speaking users. The second release candidate for the upcoming version 0.8 was announced today. Changes: cleaner and more comfortable desktop theme; improved performance; "libre" Linux kernel 2.6.31.4; support for ext4 file system; addition of "Installation Mode" to the boot menu; addition of a light-weight window manager (Openbox) for underpowered computers; complete integration of OpenOffice.org into the KDE 3 desktop; improved hardware detection, especially for webcams; system installer improvements; addition of a formatting option in the USB installer; improvements in real-time features of multimedia applications; various application updates (GIMP 2.6.7, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, Pidgin 2.6.2). Development Release: Yoper Linux 2009 Beta 2 |
| Juergen Trapp and Tobias Gerschner have announced the availability of the second beta release of Yoper Linux 2009, a desktop distribution with KDE 4, LXDE and Xfce desktops: "We are happy to announce the beta 2 of Yoper Linux 2009, soon to be Yoper Linux 2010. This release includes Linux kernel 2.6.31 with many fixes and features included in the soon-to-be-released kernel 2.6.32 (drm-next, nouveau-drm and Squashfs with LZMA support). X.Org has been updated to the final version 7.5 and Mesa 7.6, including the latest X.Org Server and drivers. As usual, the latest versions of other packages are also available, including Firefox, KOffice and GNOME Office. KDE 4 received a further overhaul and is now updated to KDE 4.3.3. Distribution Release: NuTyX 2009.1 |
| Thierry Nuttens has announced the release of NuTyX 2009.1, a French desktop-oriented distribution based on Linux From Scratch with a hybrid (binary and source) package management borrowed from CRUX. The new release comes with a number of new features, including the first-ever GNOME edition, the ability to install the distribution into LVM volumes, a simplified text-mode system installer, and a new graphical package management front-end. Distribution Release: KNOPPIX 6.2 |
| Klaus Knopper has released KNOPPIX 6.2, a new version of the popular Debian-based live CD/DVD with LXDE as the default desktop: "The current version 6.2 has been completely updated from Debian 'Lenny', 'Testing' and 'Unstable', and uses kernel 2.6.31.6 and X.Org 7.4. Microknoppix is a complete rewrite of the KNOPPIX boot system from version 6.0 and up, with the following features: high compatibility with its Debian base; accelerated boot procedure; LXDE as graphical environment - a very slim and fast desktop with extremely short start time and low resource requirements; amount of installed software greatly reduced in the CD edition; network configuration handled by NetworkManager...." Development Release: Chakra Alpha 4 |
| Phil Miller has announced the availability of the fourth alpha release of Chakra, a desktop distribution and live CD with KDE 4 based on Arch Linux: "Today we are pleased to announce the release of alpha 4, named 'NewAge', of our very own Chakra live media. A lot has changed since alpha 3. We have a new KDE 4 theme; Tribe can install custom mount points, and we did a ton of fixes. KDEmod got updated to version 4.3.3. Chakra hardware detection got stripped down to fit X.Org Server 1.7.1.901 package, so only NVIDIA drivers are the supported proprietary drivers for now. Most noticeable changes and additions since alpha 3: Linux kernel 2.6.31.6 with fglrx patch; Chakra tools updated (aqpm, shaman, chase); ATI Catalyst support temporarily dropped...." Distribution Release: Momonga Linux 6.1 |
| Takaaki Tabuchi has announced the release of Momonga Linux 6.1, a Japanese community distribution modelled on Fedora. This is a minor bug-fix and security update to Momonga Linux 6 (released in July), containing minor kernel and application updates, with most of the base system remaining unchanged. Among the updated packages are Linux kernel 2.6.30.9, X.Org Server 1.6.5, KDE 4.3.2, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, Firefox 3.5.5, Apache 2.2.14, Postfix 2.6.5, and Emacs 23.1. Some additional packages and hardware devices, such as KDE devinfo, iwl1000 and iwl6000 firmware, LXDE desktop and x3f-tools, were added to the distribution. Users running Momonga 6 can update to the latest version with yum, but upgrades from earlier versions are not supported. | Patrick Verner has announced the release of Parted Magic 4.6, a specialist live CD designed for disk management and data rescue tasks: "Parted Magic 4.6 is a mostly a bug-fix release with some usability improvements. Key changes: many fixes and changes for Netbooks; GNU Parted bug 'ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!' is fixed; Parted Magic Save Session uses xz instead of 7-zip; ClamAV was added, but you have to download the definitions yourself; Flash Player can be downloaded and installed from the panel's application launcher; a simple program to change the keyboard layout was added to the desktop; a new program added (lxrandr) to re-size the display while running inside of X.Org; ROXTerm was replaced by an svn build of LXTerminal; Clonezilla was removed from the main Parted Magic image because it's not possible to make a rescue ISO without downloading a template." Development Release: MOPSLinux 7.0 Alpha 4 |
| The fourth alpha release of MOPSLinux Linux a Russian desktop distribution based on Slackware Linux with up-to-date packages, is now available for testing. Some of the most important changes since alpha 3 include: update to Linux kernel 2.6.31.6 and glibc 2.11; support for Btrfs and NILFS2 file systems; KDE 4.3.3 and Qt 4.6-beta1; support for Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM); addition of OpenLDAP server; wxWidgets now work; fixed bug with installing distribution to hard disk other than first; the mpkg-core was split, now mpkgsupport and nwidgets are separate packages; finally solved problem with updating glibc with mpkg; wicd no longer needs to be restarted after each login. | Leszek Lesner has announced the release of ZevenOS 2.0, a Xubuntu-based distribution and live CD featuring the Xfce desktop and BeOS-like artwork: "We are proud to announce the release of ZevenOS 2.0. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
