Distribution Release: Toorox 10.2009 |
| Joern Lindau released Toorox 10.2009, a Gentoo-based live DVD featuring the latest KDE 4 desktop: "A new version has been finished and now it's ready for download. Content: Linux kernel 2.6.31, KDE 4.3.2, X.Org Server 1.6.5, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, Amarok 2.2, VLC 1.0.2, IceCat 3.5.3; Portato has been added as the second software management tool (GUI for Portage) in Systemconfig, it does a good job even though it's elementary; the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) has been added as a kernel module and will be loaded by default - if you own a graphics card with an Intel, ATI Radeon or SIS chip you can enjoy the cool desktop effects by using the free and default video driver; the LAN+WLAN script from Systemconfig has been improved; the missing Synaptics touchpad driver has been re-added and pre-configured for a handy left-click by tapping on the pad." Distribution Release: Toorox 06.2009 |
| Joern Lindau has announced the release of Toorox 06.2009, a Gentoo-based live DVD featuring the latest KDE 4: "Toorox 06.2009 is finished now. As always, the KDE was updated to the latest version 4.2.4. The recent CVS snapshot of the lancelot_part plasmoid was included because Qt was updated to 4.5.1 and the old version of the plasmoid had some trouble with it. The USB stick creator script was optimised; now there are three options - static, personal and encrypted. For the last two options the home folder will be stored and with the remaining option even password-encrypted when shut down. Now two partitions will be created - ext2 for Toorox and FAT32 for regular data storage on the pen drive. Some users had kernel panics after installation and booting from an USB hard disk - this has been fixed." Here is the brief release announcement. Download: Toorox_06.2009.iso (1,713MB, MD5). |

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
