NEW • Development Release: TinyMe 2009 Alpha 3 |
| The third alpha build of TinyMe 2009, a minimalist desktop distribution based on Unity Linux (a fork of PCLinuxOS) is now available for testing: "TinyMe 2009 'Acorn' Alpha 3. TinyMe is a Unity-based distribution targeted at older computers and people who want a very light and fast desktop environment. There are two ISOs being made available. One is compressed with gzip and the other with LZMA. The method of compression is the only difference between the two ISOs. While LZMA has a higher rate of compression, I have been informed it is not as nice on memory usage. I would strongly appreciate it if people would download both ISOs, burn them both, test both on as old a machine as they can." Here is the full release announcement. Development Release: TinyMe 2009 Alpha 1 |
| The first alpha release of TinyMe 2009, a minimalist Linux distribution based on PCLinuxOS, is now ready for testing: "It's time for the first alpha of what will become TinyMe 2009 'Acorn'. We've decided that our former naming scheme was too confusing to people and so from now the larger release will be called 'Acorn' (or a translation of that) and the smaller release will continue to be called 'Droplet'. What's different from TinyMe 2008.0? Linux kernel 2.6.26.8; LZMA compression on the live CD; LXPanel now conforms to PCLinuxOS menu system; drives are now identified by UUID rather than /dev/xxx; added Osmo, a personal information manager; added Hv3 as an alternative browser alongside Opera; removed XArchiver as PCManFM has (de)compression abilities already built in; removed gFTP and GThumb; SLiM instead of GDM." Development Release: TinyMe 2008.1 Beta 1 |
| The first beta release of TinyMe 2008.1, a minimalist distribution based on PCLinuxOS, is now ready for testing: "The first beta for TinyMe 2008.1 has been unleashed! While TinyMe 2008.0 was a great release, we're trying to make TinyMe even smaller. Thus, TinyMe 2008.1 is an effort to try to get TinyMe down to a bare-bones 150 MB ISO image. What's new for this test release? Live CD size is down to target size; switched from GDM to SLiM; put some of the artwork in place; a lot of wireless and networking stuff has been put back in. What still needs to be done? Fill in any missing wireless drivers; get keyboard selection on live CD boot to come back; re-instate TinyCC; get GRUB splash and bootsplash artwork in place; look at 2.6.22.x kernel." Development Release: TinyMe 2007 Test 6 |
| TinyMe is a PCLinuxOS-based mini-distribution featuring the Openbox window manager. A new development release, test 6, was announced earlier today: "TinyMe test 6 has been released! This release contains some major updates. Most significantly, this test has the new X.Org 7.2. Also, it has support for auto-mounting USB drives. A new look and feel has been chosen for both the standard user and root. There are a few other things which have been changed, many of which I have forgotten. Our biggest known issue/annoyance is that the icons often appear on top of windows. This should be our final test release. Please give us feedback in our forums about TinyMe. We are especially interested in hearing from those who would like to add CompizFusion to their install and try it out." Here is the brief release announcement. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
