Development Release: openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1 |
The development of a new version of openSUSE is now under way as Henne Vogelsang announces the availability of the first milestone release of version 11.3: "It's here! Development Release: openSUSE 11.1 Alpha 1 |

Christoph Thiel announced the first alpha release of openSUSE 11.1: "openSUSE 11.1 Alpha1 is available -- but beware, this is an Alpha with very rough edges! While testing this on a Thinkpad R51, the system didn't boot after first stage installation. We are still looking into this issue (#411937). In addition to that, the default GNOME installation will complain about a missing package (providing gnome-session-branding). With the current bootloader issue, using the DVDs for installing is not recommended, until we have a workaround. Please try the LiveCDs instead!" Development Release: openSUSE 11.0 Beta 2 |
The second beta of openSUSE 11.0 has been released: "The openSUSE team is proud to announce the second Beta release of openSUSE 11.0! New changes include countless bug fixes, as well as the import of the new openSUSE 11.0 artwork for login, splash screens and more. The live installation should work, but there are several known quirks, so be sure to check the most annoying bugs list before proceeding. Remember that this is a beta. It may not be safe to run for production systems, and should be used by users interested in testing the next release of openSUSE for bugs. Most annoying bugs: automatic configuration after boot into installed system behaves strangely; installation leaves traces of live system." Development Release: openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 1 |
The openSUSE development team has announced the release of openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 1: "We kickstart a major development into the next version of openSUSE: openSUSE 11.0. A very early alpha version, Alpha 1, is now available for download and testing. Despite many other products being developed in parallel to Factory, we have seen a heavy stream of development on it, so it is really worth a try if you have time for testing. The main changes against Alpha 0 are: Sat Solver integration, Michael Schröder's 'sat solver' library is now the default package solver for libzypp; heavy changes to the appearance of the Qt installation (ported to Qt 4); KDE 4.0.0, Perl 5.10, glibc 2.7, NetworkManager 0.7, CUPS 1.3.5, Pulseaudio." Development Release: openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 0 |
Stephan Kulow has announced the availability of the first development release of openSUSE 11.0: "We'd like to kick start the development of openSUSE 11.0 with releasing the current state of Factory as Alpha0 release. Since the release of 10.3, we checked in 2,187 packages including such fundamental package updates as GCC 4.3.0, Linux kernel 2.6.24-rc4, X.Org 7.3, KDE 3.5.8 and 4.0 RC1, CUPS 1.3.4, ALSA 1.0.15, GIMP 2.4 and YaST 2.16. The change between 10.3 and Alpha0 is big, but it still works pretty nicely. So please join the openSUSE 11.0 development in downloading, testing and using Alpha0 or daily updated Factory distribution. So far there are some glitches in the installation process that are mostly harmless. But the new kernel in particular can cause some regressions we would love to hear about those through Bugzilla." Development Release: KDE Four Live 0.7 |
Stephan Binner has announced the availability of KDE Four Live 0.7, an openSUSE-based live CD featuring the newly released KDE 4.0 RC1. One interesting point of the announcement is the author's frustration over the quality of KDE 4, expressing strong doubts about the suitability of KDE 4.0 final for production use: "The so-called 'Release Candidate' of KDE 4.0 has been released, with packages for openSUSE available. The KDE Four Live CD release 0.7 contains them. It looks like whatever will be released or presented at the event which was fixed by the sponsor to happen in January will be only used by very early adopters. Hopefully openSUSE 11.0 will be able to ship some KDE 4.1.x release or some very high KDE 4.0.x release (which saw some light features freeze lift)." Here is the brief release announcement. Interested testers can download the live CD from here: KDE-Four-Live.i686-0.7.iso (562MB, MD5). |

Development Release: openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 7 |
Stephan Kulow has announced a new alpha release of openSUSE 10.3: "Alpha7 is ready, after 5 rebuilds we're happy to say it looks good enough for the public. Important changes since Alpha6: Linux kernel 2.6.22.1, GCC 4.2.1, libzypp 3.12.1; the package set of the CDs are heavily reshuffled and with it the patterns also affecting the DVD. After Alpha6 was more about testing the first integration of libzypp, Alpha7 is already 10 steps further in regards to libzypp. But we'd like to have your feedback on the refresh policy of yast/zypper. See Duncan's explanation about the problem in the opensuse-factory archive." Read the rest of the release announcement for further details. Reviews: First Look at SUSE Linux 10.0 |
Mad Penguin has published a comprehensive review of the new SUSE Linux 10.0, OSS edition: "At the end of the day I feel comfortable recommending SUSE 10 to anyone wishing to either try on their Linux shoes for the first time or to those who already know the operating system already but are looking for one of the better desktop distros on the planet. SUSE Linux 10 should have enough allure to cater to everyone's needs with its stellar looks and fine assortment of included applications. Everything just seems to work as it should, and it's welcome in my home any day of the week. Even for small business needs I think this distribution might perform well, though enterprise deployment is completely out of the question. You'll want to take a look at Novell's other offerings if you need an enterprise solution." The 3-page review with screenshots starts here. |

Reviews: Three Reviews of SUSE Linux 10.0 |
Three new reviews of SUSE Linux 10.0 have hit the Internet over the last couple of days. The Jem Report: "As always, SUSE Linux is a pleasure to use, and remains my preferred operating system for notebook computers because of its great wireless networking tools, wide array of up-to-date desktop software, and the YaST configuration tool." DesktopLinux: "This is the first effort in 'openness' from Novell, and it's a good one, all in all." Linux-Noob: "My overall feeling about SUSE Linux OSS 10, is a mixed bag of emotions. I'm very happy that power management has improved but at the same time I'm disappointed with the lousy wireless support (Centrino 2200bg) and also with the incorrect video resolution." |

Interview: A Glimpse of SUSE Linux 10.0 |
What can we look forward to in SUSE Linux 10.0? MozillaQuest provides some answers in a newly published article that outlines the products main features before the author conducts an email interview with Greg Mancusi-Ungaro, Novell's director of marketing: "In the past, the SUSE Linux development has been conducted internally with small privately managed betas. Now, as part of the openSUSE project, we have opened our beta review to the public. The initial response to our public beta has exceeded our expectations. Since the start of the openSUSE project we have released five beta builds and one release candidate. Collectively these builds have been installed more than 12,000 times by the community and we have received more than 500 high-quality bugs from community participants." The full story. |

Novell to Make SUSE Linux Open-Source |
"At LinuxWorld, Novell will release its first public beta of SUSE Linux Version 10.0... Next year, the company intends to establish a public-code repository and a public-build server for the open-source operating system." Following a link provided on the official SUSE website, we are confirmed that Novell will brand its SUSE Linux Professional flavor as SUSE Linux and will make the operating system open-source. However, the move to open-source SUSE is different from the approach of Fedora: "OpenSUSE has a different goal; it's all about end-user success. We have to develop something that's so usable that it can be deployed by someone who's not technical." Read the full news on Computerworld. More information on SUSE Linux 10.0 can be found on heise online. |

Reviews: Bleeding-Edge Linux Desktop: SUSE LINUX 9.3 |
eWEEK has published a comprehensive 4-page review of SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional: "Novell Inc.'s SuSE Linux Professional 9.3 desktop gives not only other leading Linux desktop distributions like Xandros a run for their money, but also enterprise desktops such as Windows XP Pro. Nat Friedman, vice president of Linux desktop engineering at Novell, said, 'We are getting ahead of Windows for the first time.' After kicking SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3's tires, I agree. This is one impressive desktop distribution. It has every Linux application that anyone is ever likely to want and it's all tied together with either a slick and up-to-date KDE or GNOME interface." SUSE LINUX 9.3 Released to Mirrors |
Some nine weeks after the official release of SUSE LINUX 9.3, an installable DVD image of the product has been released to SUSE's download mirrors. SUSE is one of the leading Linux distributions on the market; its latest release is compiled from over 1,000 popular software packages and provides an early look at some emerging technologies, such as Xen virtualisation and Beagle desktop search. Despite that, many reviewers were left unimpressed by what they call a "deliberate crippling" of multimedia support in this release. See the distribution's features pages for further information about SUSE LINUX 9.3. The DVD image is now available from a number of German and international mirror sites, such as this one: SUSE-9.3-Eval-DVD.iso (4,280MB, MD5). As usual, a small network installation CD image for direct installation from a remote FTP or HTTP server is also available in the same directory as the DVD image. |

Reviews: SUSE 9.3: More, Better, Faster, Now! |
LinuxPlanet has published a comprehensive review of SUSE LINUX 9.3. Their conclusion? "SUSE has always been a good desktop distribution, and I've used it off and on for years on some of my test machines. With Novell's support and financial encouragement, it should continue to be an excellent choice for a wide variety of users. I'm extremely happy with it and use it on both my laptop and home server system. If you're looking for a supported, complete, commercial Linux distribution, look at SUSE. Contrary to a recent editorial in an online Linux publication, there's plenty of mojo left in the gecko. The 6-page review starts here. |

Reviews: SUSE Pro 9.3 - Good Open-Source Venue |
eWEEK has published a good, comprehensive review of SUSE LINUX 9.3: "Novell Inc.'s SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 is an excellent general-purpose operating system. In fact, when it comes to combining leading-edge Linux and open-source software, Version 9.3 is the most polished and complete Linux distribution eWEEK Labs has tested. ... SUSE LINUX Professional 9.3 is perhaps most impressive as a platform on which developers and system administrators can evaluate new technologies. Version 9.3 leads the Linux distribution pack in its support for Mono (the open-source implementation of Microsoft Corp.'s .Net Framework) and Xen (the promising system virtualization technology)." Distribution Review: SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional |
Ryan Trauntvein has written a review of SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional focusing on the installation process: "I plan to stick with SuSE 9.3 as my desktop OS at home for the time being. It is very similar to what I use at work (Novell Linux Desktop 9), which allows me to easily exchange .rpm's and other files between work and home... Be sure to give SuSE 9.3 Professional a try when it is publicly available, you should enjoy it." Read the review on USA Linux Users Group. |

Reviews: First Look at SUSE LINUX 9.3 |
Mad Penguin is unimpressed by the new SUSE LINUX 9.3, which is expected to start shipping next week: "SUSE 9.3 has the potential to be a serious contender on the desktop, but sadly I cannot recommend this release to anyone looking for a well-balanced desktop Linux system. While they score points for making use of the latest and greatest desktop environments, new peripheral technology, and usability enhancements, the way they've crippled the multimedia functionality of this one-time world class distro is hard to ignore. ... I know during the review I had my fair share of frustration with it and it's a frustration I've never had with SUSE before so I see this as one of those 'oops' releases that many developers put out." Here is the full story with plenty of screenshots. |

Reviews: SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional |
Novell's Cool Solution site has published a review of a current beta of SUSE LINUX 9.3, due for release next month: "All the buzz about the release of SUSE 9.3 Professional got me excited. This very morning, I downloaded and installed SUSE LINUX 9.3 Professional beta 4. The installation is similar to 9.2 though the screens seem crisper. It has definitely had some work, as it will do an md5sum check on the installation media to make sure it's not been corrupted. Also, when Grub was installed, it recognized the other bootable partitions. It put these partitions into the Grub menu automatically. It did not do this in previous versions. That's all I'm going to mention about the installation. Instead, let's take a look at some of the changes you'll in the newest version of SUSE when you are actually using it." The review is fairly brief, but it includes many interesting screenshots.

SUSE LINUX 9.2 Professional Edition Review |
Mandrakelinux Tips4Free has posted a detailed review of SUSE LINUX 9.2 (with many screenshots) and compared it to Mandrakelinux 10.1: "With all that's been said, the only conclusion is that SUSE LINUX 9.2 Professional is a fine Linux distribution. Much like Mandrakelinux, it's not perfect, but it has a low threshold and so is suited for novice users. It is not dumbed down or needlessly limited, so it's also suited for advanced users. Naturally, SUSE is better at some points than Mandrakelinux, and vice versa, but I'd say they are both top Linux distributions. Other than direct 'binary quality', like Mandrakelinux, SUSE stays true to the principles of Free Software, and both have great user communities - two major aspects of any Linux distribution that are very often forgotten." SUSE LINUX 9.2 Available for Download |
SUSE LINUX 9.2 has been released to mirrors. Besides the traditional network install, SUSE is now also providing a complete DVD ISO image containing packages for both i386 and x86_64 architectures. From the README file: "If you have a DVD burner, you can download the DVD image and burn it on a DVD to boot and install from it, just like you would do with a DVD from a SUSE Linux 9.2 box edition. If you have a CDR/RW burner, you may want to download the file mini-installation ISO, burn it on a CD and boot from it to start the installation of the SUSE Linux 9.2 FTP version." Most mirrors have yet to get in synch with the main server, but you can download the ISO images from here: SUSE-Linux-9.2-mini-installation.iso (64.2MB) or SUSE-Linux-9.2-FTP-DVD.iso (3,208MB). Have a great weekend :-)

Review: SUSE LINUX 9.2 Professional |

OSNews has published a comprehensive review of SUSE LINUX 9.2 Professional: "SUSE 9.2 Pro definitely deserves the Professional tag in its name. It is a professionally made package, no doubt. It has a large set of software packages, excellent hardware support, is secure and fast. For the Advanced computer user, SUSE LINUX Professional 9.2 is an excellent choice for desktop, laptop or small server usage. If you are a power user using Windows XP or Mac OS X, you would be surprised how far Linux has come." The 4-page review with screenshots starts here.

SUSE LINUX 9.2: Let the Branding Begin! |
LinuxPlanet has published a new review of SUSE Linux 9.2: "SUSE 9.2 is robust, complete, and well thought out. It now says Novell, but that's a good thing. Novell has the budget, the motivation, and the enterprise experience to help SUSE be more than it might have been otherwise. If you're looking for a supported, complete, commercial Linux distribution, look at this page. Between products such as SUSE 9.2, SUSE Enterprise Server, and the promise of future versions of NetWare hosted on Linux (guess which flavor), I think that we'll all be seeing a good bit more of SUSE in the future." Novell Serves up an Operating System Winner with SLES 9 |
Network World Fusion has reviewed SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 and the reviewers were clearly impressed: "Several features make SUSE a Clear Choice winner. It outperforms the competition. Its compatibility list is strong. Even though there are a few exclusive items, it would take quite some time to assemble the open source components Novell has put in the SLES 9 framework and make them all run together cohesively. Moreover, the YaST improvements will give GUI comfort to those who don't want to memorize server application variants. The combination gives SLES 9 far wider appeal than previous versions." New Reviews of SUSE LINUX 9.2 |
Two new reviews of SUSE LINUX 9.2 appeared this weekend. Mad Penguin: "With the exception of the missing Novell Connector for Evolution and the lack of proper multimedia support, SUSE LINUX Professional 9.2 is hands down one of the best distributions I've seen this year, and considering it's December there's not much hope that another distro can top it at this point." Linux Gazette: "SUSE 9.2 is a system that is extremely easy to install, at least to an empty machine. It updates a prior version very well. Adding and removing software packages is essentially a no-brainer. It now deals with removable media as many people expect, including USB. Printer support has improved dramatically, although proprietary anything does remain problematic. SUSE 9.2 is ready for the desktop."

SUSE LINUX 9.2 Reviewed |
OSNews has published two review of SUSE LINUX 9.2. The first one, entitled Is SUSE Ready for the Laptop? Review of SUSE 9.2 Pro recommends the latest SUSE release as a perfect operating system for a laptop: "One thing is clear - SUSE professional has undergone massive improvements for users of mobile hardware. ... If you have a laptop and you want to run Linux, SUSE 9.2 professional is an excellent choice." The second review, called Fedora Core 3 vs. SUSE 9.2 Professional is a 4-page comparison of features found in the latest Fedora and SUSE releases: "So on one side I have Fedora, which is closer to the Red Hat systems I support, completely free, and with a large and diverse add-on repositories. On the other side is SUSE with Novell backing, better out-of-the-box support, better looking, and seemingly better polished."

Review: SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server Steps Up |
eWEEK has reviewed the recently released SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9: "We were particularly impressed with the changes in YaST for setting up Samba 3. The Windows-compatible file, print and authentication service can be confusing to configure, but in our tests, YaST did a good job of simplifying the configuration process. We could configure our test systems for basic file sharing as well as set them up to serve as primary or backup Domain Controllers in a Windows network." The 3-page story starts here.

Basics for SUSE LINUX |
AntiOnline, a worldwide community of computer/network security, has published a review of SUSE LINUX: "This is a very basic guide to help configure and secure a SUSE Linux system... This should work for 8.1 Professional 8.2 Professional and most of 9.1 Professional... The first thing you should when you have finished installing SUSE Linux, is to check for updates. Usually you can do this while you're installing, but just in case you haven't you should do it after you boot up. By default, you should see a little icon in the lower right hand corner, which will turn Red when you have a security update. Just right click on it and select 'Check for updates'." The full story.

SuSE 9.1 Professional Review |
ipKonfig.com has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional: "SuSE was founded in 1992 and released their first distribution in 1993. Since then, the company has grown and in January of 2004, the Novell corporation of networking fame bought into the company. This marks a major change for the Linux community since Novell can add years of networking experience to the codebase used by developers and strengthen some of the code where needed. SuSE 9.1 marks the first distribution with Novell and will show the direction that SuSE will be taking in the future." The full review with screenshots.

SUSE 9.1 Personal ISO Available for Free Download |
Departing from its past practice of not providing ISO images for free download, SUSE has released a complete, bootable, and installable ISO image of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal. You can find it on SUSE's main FTP server or one of its mirrors, although there is no news about the release on SUSE's own web site. This is a great way to try out SUSE LINUX 9.1 and see its capabilities, before upgrading to the Professional edition via FTP or purchasing the full boxed versions (which includes commercial software). Download from here: SUSE-9.1-personal-x86.iso (700MB) or try one of the official SUSE mirrors.

Moving from Debian To SUSE and Back Again |
This is a somewhat different viewpoint about the new SUSE LINUX 9.1, through the eyes of a Debian user: "SUSE has done a lot of things right with this release, unfortunately almost none of those things are particularly useful to me in everyday operation of my computer. The important things, like software availability and management, proper detection of my basic hardware, and straightforward configuration are quite lacking and have sent me straight back to my old Debian install. I have earnestly made an effort to like this distribution and wish I could switch to something 'easier' than Debian, but I just cannot bring myself to use SUSE 9.1 on a regular basis." SUSE LINUX 9.1 Available for Free Download |
As promised earlier, SUSE LINUX has opened its entire 9.1 directory tree for free download and installation via FTP/HTTP: "SUSE offers the possibility to install SUSE LINUX free of charge directly from the FTP server. The function scope of FTP versions is virtually the same as that of the 'normal' version. Merely a few program packages have been excluded due to license reasons. The installation support is not included either." More information about installing SUSE LINUX via FTP can be found on this page. Download the boot image from one of SUSE's mirrors or try here: boot.iso (23.2MB). Then burn the image to a CD, boot from it, and follow the instructions. As always, have a lot of fun :-)

SUSE LINUX 9.1: The Complete Review |
DesktopOS.com has published a comprehensive review of both Personal and Professional editions of SUSE LINUX 9.1: "SUSE LINUX 9.1 is a well-implemented, modern general-purpose distribution that is easy to install, pleasant to interact with, and supports a wide range of modern hardware. The developers at SUSE have always striven to create user-friendly products for consumers, and their latest achievement is evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, and not without problems. I have spent over two weeks using the product, and can confidently say that, despite its quirks, SUSE has developed a product that is a serious contender for the crown of 'Best Linux Desktop'." Review: SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional |
The Linux Format magazine has reviewed SUSE LINUX 9.1 and awarded the distribution its "Top Stuff Award": "If you're already using SUSE 9.0, there are several reasons to upgrade. The new kernel works just fine, it includes a customised release of XFree86 4.4RC2 (the release before the licence change) that gives all the benefits of the newer release and is rock solid, and KDE 3.2 is simply a joy to use. YaST, for its part, has gone from an application we seriously despise to something very usable - even command-line package installation has been redone to make it almost as powerful as Debian's apt-get. ... This is the strongest release of SUSE yet, and is unparalleled in its ease-of-use for beginners and veterans alike." SUSE has re-published the review as a PDF document for your reading pleasure.

SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional Desktop Review |
Flexbeta has published a review of SUSE Linux 9.1 Professional: "If you are looking to jump distribution ships, or are a new user in Linux, SUSE LINUX 9.1 offers the best of everything available for Linux, whether you normally use KDE or GNOME. Also, with the YaST control center, there is no other distribution that offers easier or more inclusive system tools than SUSE LINUX 9.1. Barring the small annoyances, I was very impressed with this distribution and would highly recommend it to any computer user. If you are still unsure of spending the $80 or so dollars for this, SUSE offers a free LiveCD version that you can take for a test drive, or if you are really stingy, you will be able to do a FTP install from the SUSE mirrors after June 4, 2004." SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional x86/AMD64 |
The Jem Report has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professional: "SUSE 9.1 Professional is so close to being the desktop GNU/Linux prodigy that everyone has been waiting for, but it's not quite there yet. If you're willing to install third-party RPMs to add DVD playback capability and to tweak the sound drivers in AMD64 mode, you've got the perfect desktop operating system in SUSE 9.1 Professional. When it comes to operating systems I believe that everything should work as expected right out of the box, so I'm not giving my full approval of this product. On the other hand, if you were comparing the ease of installation and configuration of SUSE 9.1 Professional to Windows XP, there is no doubt that SUSE would be the winner. And you can also mark it up as being easier to update and secure." The full review with screenshots.

SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal Edition Review |
The Jem Report has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal: "SUSE 9.1 Personal comes with all of the software you need to run a standard home desktop machine. While you can easily add other Free Software and proprietary programs, if you need much more than the Personal Edition offers, I'd recommend going with Professional instead. If you're not sure what you'll need, Personal is probably the better choice. ... The Personal Edition is software your mother can use. It's easier to use and configure than Windows is, and it's certainly a lot safer for the novice user." The full review.

The SUSE LINUX 9.1 FTP version is being worked on and will be published in a few days, in this directory." Novell's SUSE LINUX Has Landed |
Sydney Morning Herald has published a brief review of SUSE LINUX 9.1: "SUSE's office suite is the free OpenOffice.org but an additional application, the Rekall database, gives the user all that Microsoft Access provides to the office user. But SUSE does not confine itself to KDE - GNOME 2.4 is also present. For those who prefer desktop environments with a lot less, the Ice Window Manager is there. However, while KDE is extremely well integrated and modified to a large extent, the GNOME in SUSE is more or less the vanilla version. Novell has, however, indicated that the next version of SUSE will see features from both desktops becoming part of the default." The full review.

Quick Look at SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal |
Mad Penguin has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal: "If you are new to Linux and are interested in learning just enough to get your feet wet, and don't plan on getting under the hood for quite some time, this distribution might be for you. The only concern you should have is multimedia support, which SUSE will hopefully address as soon as possible. Other than that, this is a very capable desktop that you should find worthy of the price tag... and to be absolutely honest with you, a great introduction to Linux. There aren't that many distributions I would recommend to extremely green Linux users, but SUSE is one of them." The complete review with screenshots.

Linux.com has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.1 RC2: "Remember, this review was done on a second release candidate of 9.1, which is not quite the final version. I'm pretty happy with SUSE 9.1. All of my personal mission-critical apps (GNOME apps, every one of them) integrated wonderfully into the KDE environment. They just work, just like they are supposed to do. Next time, hopefully on the production release, I'll install the GNOME environment and see how well it integrates the best KDE apps." The full story.

A Quick Look at the SUSE 9.1 Beta |
Linux.com is the first publication to bring us a peek at the new SUSE LINUX 9.1, scheduled for release at the end of this month: "I was eager to get my hands on the newest version of SUSE Linux, the first version produced by the company under the Novell corporate umbrella. Like many others, I wondered how it would jell. SUSE has been a leading commercial proponent of the KDE desktop environment. Common wisdom the past few years has held that if you liked KDE, SUSE was your best bet. If Gnome was your choice, Red Hat was the best way to go. Prior to the SUSE purchase, Novell acquired Ximian, with its deep involvement with the Gnome project. Would KDE suddenly find itself a second class environment on the distro that loved it?" Two SUSE LINUX 9.0 Reviews |
Two SUSE LINUX reviews have been published over the last few days. Although neither of them has managed to get the spelling of SUSE LINUX right, they are still worth a read. ExtremeTech: "In the great pantheon of Linux distributions, SUSE 9 Professional occupies a venerable spot. It's packed with programs, developer tools, and terrific desktops." Sumeet M Moghe's: "Overall SUSE 9.0 Professional has given me a lot more smiles than frowns and I must confess I have had a lot of fun. If there would be a serious complaint I would have against SUSE, that would just be because of the fact that SUSE, unlike other distros, doesn't allow distribution under the GPL."

SUSE 9.0: A Distro Worth Paying For |
This is a review of SUSE LINUX 9.0 by Internet Week: "SUSE understands that it's going to have to exist in a Windows-dominated world, and has gone a long way towards compatibility, starting with capabilities that make it easy to install the OS in dual-boot configuration alongside Windows XP or Windows 2000. SUSE makes Microsoft's NTFS file system easily accessible, and also includes utilities for re-sizing an NTFS partition. SUSE 9 has a great installation program, called YAST (Yet Another Setup Tool). It's GUI-oriented and makes installation of a new operating system as painless as it can be." The 2-page review starts here.

The Inquirer has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.0 Professional, entitled "SUSE LINUX Pro 9.0 screeches out of Fernando's Hideaway": "I give SUSE LINUX Pro 9.0 four Fernandos in my 'one to five' product scoring scale. Our editor promises he will have a nice graphic scoreboard with 'tiny little faces of me' ready soon, for your admiration and horror. If they fixed the 'end user experience' - that is, the default install selections - and got rid of the linuxspeak like LindowsOS has done, this would be a perfect linux for everyone. Until then, I think SUSE 9.0 Pro is the best linux distro you can get, for people who already have Linux experience, and for someone looking for a quality distro to deploy into a workplace." Review: SUSE LINUX 9.0 |
Ars Technica has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.0 Personal Edition: "Once you complete the software installation and system configuration, you can boot SUSE up for the first time. By default, the user is presented with a KDE user interface, with which SUSE's configuration and setup tools are best integrated. KDE users will appreciate that SUSE's default desktop installation easily has the best KDE desktop out of the box among all the distributions we've tried. ... All in all, we were very impressed with how friendly the SUSE system appears to users relatively unfamiliar with Linux. Everything from the documentation and manuals provided to their setup and configuration tools seems to be designed to make things easy for the first-time user." The full review.

Free Download of SUSE LINUX 9.0 |
As reported in last week's DistroWatch Weekly, SUSE LINUX 9.0 is now available for FTP/HTTP installation directly from remote servers. The usual download rush has made many mirrors hard to access, but you can try your luck by searching for an available one on these lists of German and international mirrors. Installation is not difficult; first download the boot.iso (21.7MB) and burn it onto a CD, then boot from it and let the installation program guide you through the process. If you get stuck, you can refer to our earlier review of SUSE LINUX, which includes instructions for FTP installation and other helpful hints. This is a good way to try out SUSE, but if you end up using it on a permanent basis, consider buying a full boxed edition (US$38.95 for the Professional edition) to support its future development. Have a lot of fun!

Review: SUSE LINUX 9.0 |
NewsForge has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.0 Professional: "What makes SUSE LINUX 9 different from other friendly Linux distributions such as Lindows and Xandros is that it is highly configurable and gives users much more than just a Web browser and office suite. SUSE's closest rival is Mandrake, as both provide similar packages. In my view SUSE has a slight advantage with its configuration tools and good support. I also find that its easier to find RPMs for SUSE than for Mandrake." The complete review.

Review: SUSE 9 Professional |
UnixReview has published a review of SUSE LINUX 9.0, Professional edition: "Because SUSE 9 is a major version jump (from 8.2 to 9.0), I expected the release to be significantly different from its predecessor. It definitely has some improvements, but it seems like more of a point release than a major jump. SUSE 9.0 is a modest upgrade from SUSE 8.2. There are a number of improvements, but it's not the major leap that many Linux users may be used to. There's nothing wrong with these modest improvements, of course, but this isn't a "must have" release. If you're already running SUSE 8.2 and you're happy with it, there's no reason to rush out and buy the new boxed set. You may prefer to wait until the next release, which is sure to include a stable (if early) 2.6 kernel and probably KDE 3.2 and other goodies." Read the rest of the review.

The Open magazine has publish a thorough review, including performance benchmarks of SUSE LINUX 9.0 Professional: "In keeping with the goal of providing all of the 'latest and greatest' capabilities within the SUSE Linux Professional series distributions, there is a long list of new hardware devices supported, powerful new Open Source applications bundled, and systems management features extended in SUSE Linux 9.0 Professional. All of this rolls up into a Linux distribution package that is destined to become de rigueur for power users around the world." Read the complete review with screenshots.

SUSE's Desktop Designed to Woo Windows Users |
PC Pro features an interview with SUSE's Director of Distribution Development Chris Schläger and Marketing Director Jasmin Ul-Haque: "With SUSE LINUX 9.0 we also expect another group of Linux users to convert: the real audience that we want to target here are those who for some reason are really fed up with Microsoft - either because of the security problems they have and will continue to have, or the licensing scheme [Microsoft is] now applying. These are probably the groups that are most willing to try something new. They feel the pain. They are afraid of surrendering their data to the random Internet community, because of viruses, backdoors and the diallers that are now around." The complete interview.

Announcement: SuSE Linux 9.0 |
SuSE Linux has officially announced the release of SuSE Linux 9.0, which will become available on 15 October in Europe and 24 October in other parts of the world. What's new? "Q: What are the three most important new features of SUSE LINUX 9.0? A: The installation tool of SUSE LINUX now enables resizing of hard disk partitions containing Windows 2000 and XP systems in order to make room for Linux. OpenOffice.org has made a giant leap ahead, and the support of Athlon 64 brings the advantages of 64-bit computing to your home office." The above comes from a brief interview with SuSE's Director of Distribution Development, Chris Schläger (also available in German). Read the official press release - in English or German.

First Look at SuSE Linux Professional 9.0 |
MadPenguin has published the first review of the yet-to-be-released SuSE Linux 9.0 Professional: "Overall, you have to hand it to SuSE. They have kept their vision and focus throughout the years. They have not changed their product drastically like others have tried to do and failed. SuSE has been slowly evolving and in a specific direction. It is good to see a Linux company with such focus as to be able to remain on the same path for so many years and still be gaining ground. SuSE Linux Professional 9.0 is a solid distribution and comes highly recommended by this reviewer for those either just starting out with Linux or those who are just looking for the ultimate Linux Desktop." SuSE Linux Professional 8.2 Review |
Linux Journal has published a review of SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional: "SuSE did a good job customizing KDE. The desktop has a Gecko eye icon that brings up the launcher you see the first time you log in; it links to support, updates and the like. A matching icon is in the Start position for the usual KDE menus, and a second green icon with a lightning bolt pulls up a menu of standard desktop functions (word processor, e-mail, music and so forth). A third icon, the classic document icon, handles text, pictures, presentations and the file manager. Over on the right, next to the clock, is the YOU (YaST Online Update) icon." The complete review.

Review: SuSE Linux Desktop |
ZDNet reviews SuSE Linux Desktop, the enterprise edition of SuSE's flagship product: "In a real-world production environment, we found that SuSE Linux Desktop worked surprisingly well, and supplied all the software needed in a typical office. In fact, some of the software was better than its Windows equivalents, such as the XMMS media player, which imitates WinAmp but is somewhat easier to use. In general, we did not find using Linux in a Windows-centric environment to be a handicap, which is saying a lot. However, the problems we did come across (particularly the apparent limitations of Samba), and the amount of tinkering required to solve them, raised serious doubts about recommending Linux for widespread office use just yet." SuSE 8.2: More Desktop Progress |
Open for Business has published a new review of SuSE Linux 8.2: "In all, SuSE 8.2 doesn't bring a lot to the table that SuSE 8.1 users don't already enjoy, but it does continue to polish the distribution into something serious desktop users will find comfortable and well designed. While earlier in its history, SuSE's distributions often suffered from a lack of refinement, this is certainly not the case any longer. For the third time in a year, we will say this about SuSE Linux... yes, it is SuPERB." The full review.

First Look at SuSE Linux Desktop |
MadPenguin is the first publication to review the new SuSE Linux Desktop, released earlier today: "Overall I think this is a great product. The usability is there. It's easy for newbies to grasp and use, and even though the price tag is a hefty $598.00 USD, you do get an excellent package for the money. Their documentation and manuals can not be beat. I've seen many commercial Linux/UNIX packages and SuSE beats every last one of them in regard to documentation and hard copy manuals. Electronic documentation is nice in a pinch, but nothing beats a good book and SuSE knows that." The full review with screenshots.

SuSE Makes Linux Desktop Migration Easier |
This is a double-news item about SuSE's release of the brand new SuSE Linux Desktop, announced earlier today, as well as the product's analysis by NewsForge: "SuSE Linux Desktop includes several commercial products not provided with their SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional package, most notably Crossover Office and Crossover Plugin, so Linux converts can still use such familiar Windows software as MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, MSIE, Lotus Notes, and many others. With the Plugin utility, Linux users can view Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Shockwave, and other file formats previously closed to them. Again, you can argue easily that this should not be a necessity, but for a pragmatic business person the idea of switching to Linux without giving up familiar Windows software and 'bells and whistles' is a powerful lure." City of Munich Replaces Windows with Linux |
Richard Seibt, CEO SuSE Linux: "Today, the city of Munich announced a courageous, momentous decision to choose the right technology at the right time. Courageous because it is not always easy to decide against the status quo -- especially in the face of the tremendous pressures we know can be brought to bear. Momentous because we believe this truly marks a watershed moment for Linux." Yes indeed, Munich makes the history once again. SuSE Linux Demonstrates Old PCs Still Have Use |
LinuxPlanet looks at SuSE Linux 8.2 and its ability to run on older hardware: "Trying out the latest SuSE package on a rusty old computer might be crazy, but you can't argue with the fact that the machine performed pretty well and would be quite usable as a regular business workhorse or home Internet/word-processing box. Most readers probably have a few of these machines, just gathering dust, that could be put to use right now." The review starts here. On a related note, eWeek's article Mandrake, SuSE Lift Linux concludes that "SuSE Linux 8.2 and Mandrake Linux 9.1 compare well with Red Hat Linux 9, the latest release from Linux heavyweight Red Hat Inc., particularly in the range and the quality of the system administration tools that ship with both products." SuSE Linux 8.2 Available for Download |
This is just a short note to say that SuSE Linux 8.2 has now been spotted on several mirrors. While SuSE does not provide easily install-able ISO images for download, their 8.2 directory has been uploaded to provide a method to install SuSE's Professional Edition directly from FTP servers. First, get the installation image: boot.iso (20MB), then boot from it and follow the instructions provided in this readme file: "Boot from CD and at the boot prompt, enter the installation source: linux install=ftp://ftp_server/directory." The official SuSE mirrors are listed on these two pages: German mirrors and International mirrors. We would like to wish you all a very happy weekend with SuSE :-).

SuSE 8.2 -- better than Mandrake for new users? |
It is NewsForge's turn to praise the latest release from SuSE Linux: "The highest compliment I can pay SuSE 8.2 here is that I don't notice it while I'm working. I read and reply to email in Mozilla Messenger (refreshingly spam-free with 1.3), I write online articles -- like this one -- in Bluefish, I use OpenOffice to deal with the MS Office-format material I must deal with as part of my work, I browse the Web with Mozilla while listening (more often than not) to my favorite MP3s with XMMS through the high-powered Altec external speaker system I have plugged into my laptop. I get and send instant messages through GAIM, and participate in IRC with XChat. I use my USB printer without thinking about it; I click 'print' and I get paper output through CUPS, no sweat except for one little trick, which this is a good time to clarify." The full review.

SuSE 8.2 Approaches Computing Nirvana |
Another review of SuSE Linux 8.2, this time from The Register: "When you see how easy this is to configure, and how far the KDE desktop has progressed, it becomes virtually impossible for an IT department running on Linux servers to justify keeping all those MCSEs jogging about, therapeutically re-booting the Windows desktops on a daily basis. ... Some months ago we concluded that SuSE 8.1 had not evolved sufficiently beyond 8.0 to recommend it, but in the case of 8.2 there are more than enough new goodies to keep users happy with their systems for quite some time." Head to Head: SuSE 8.2 Pro vs Red Hat Linux 9 |
OSNews compares the two recent releases from the perspective of a desktop Linux user: "This is not a review whether these key Linux distributions are ready for the desktop. They are - we use them for all the work we have - and we have plenty of it. This is a review whether Red Hat Linux 9 is a better choice than SuSE 8.2 Pro for desktop use." SuSE is declared a clear winner: "Kudos for SuSE 8.2. As a desktop operating system, it beats Red Hat 9 in almost every issue. Red Hat 9 is not a bad choice, but you can get a better user experience with SuSE 8.2."The rest of the story is here.

A Look at SuSE 8.2 Professional |
Linux and Main reviews SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional Edition: "One of the pure delights of this distribution is, following a full install, to browse among the applications. The SuSE menu reads like a listing from a good ftp site, only this time you can click on the apps and see what they look like, what they do, how well they do it. It will take weeks to go through them all. Just about everything you've ever heard of is here (though, again, much of it is not installed by default; to bring that about you must select the packages individually), as well as a lot of stuff you've probably never heard of but are glad to know about. Not all the apps are knock-your-socks-off good, but they are surprising as to their variety and certainly many are excellent." The full review.

If you want to get to know SuSE Linux or test if your hardware is fully supported, the live-eval version is the right choice for you." SuSE Linux 8.2: Evolutionary, but not Revolutionary |
OSNews reviews the new SuSE Linux 8.2: "This SuSE release feels mostly like an incremental version of SuSE rather than a version that includes 'at least one big new featurei' that would apply to the majority of the users (most of the users don't use ISDN for example). It is more of the same overall, not ground-breaking or innovative new features not found elsewhere, but with newer package versions, bug fixes and with a better looking desktop overall. If you are a user who has never tried SuSE, then this might be a good version to try out for the first time." The full story with plenty of screenshots.

First Look At SuSE Linux 8.2 |
MadPenguin is the first publication to review the new SuSE Linux 8.2: "While it may not be the first choice for veteran Linux users, SuSE Linux 8.2 is an excellent choice for people new to the Linux world, as well as individuals who want an operating system that comes complete with everything they will ever need. It also is a preferable distro to use for audio/video content creation due to amount of programs it comes with of this nature. There are still others who may be interested in just having a system that works. In all cases, SuSE does the job very well with minimal effort. All in all, on a scale from 1 to 10, I would give SuSE Linux an even 8.2. It's easy to use, pretty to look at, works very well, and is downright stable." The full review with screenshots.

Who Wins the Shootout? |
We are of course talking about OfB's recent review series called "Linux distribution shootout" to choose the best desktop distribution. As the icon on the left indicates, the top award went to none other than SuSE Linux 8.1: "SuSE's clean, professional desktop is rivaled only by LindowsOS's layout, and gave us an environment straight out of the box that was not only intuitive but also eye appealing. And, as always, SuSE beats the competition concerning documentation, with a very hefty box full of manuals, including a 450-page guide that should cover almost any basic issues you may want to know about. SuSE's inclusion of a DVD copy of the distribution is also laudable and rounds out an already very nice package. " The full story.

The State of SuSE |
NewsForge interviews Holger Dyroff, SuSE's US representative about SuSE's new products, trends in Linux desktop/consumer use and the state of Linux market penetration in general: "Q: I tried -- and liked -- the new SuSE office desktop product. What additional features are we going to see in the upcoming version? A: Good question. The newly announced SuSE Linux 8.2 will not be a successor of the SuSE Linux Office Desktop but a new version of our successful Personal and Professional series! New features we'll see are Ease-of-Use with KDE 3.1, more applications like MainActor and GNUCash (video editing and home banking) as well as better mobility (Wireless LAN cards and WinModems). With regards to the SuSE Linux Office Desktop it's well received from our customers and we will continue this product line as well and enhance it in the not too distant future." Distribution Announcement: SuSE Linux 8.2 |
SuSE Linux has formally announced the latest version of its personal and professional editions, SuSE Linux 8.2: "SuSE Linux 8.2, will be available on April 14, and will feature an enhanced KDE 3.1 and a GNOME 2.2 desktop that's 'more enhanced than you have seen before', according to Holger Dyroff, General Manager Americas. The increased focus on GNOME may be a direct result of the new Ximian-SuSE partnership announced last week -- but don't look for Ximian Desktop for SuSE on the Personal and Professional editions anytime soon." This is the announcement as published by LinuxToday, but if you can read German, see also SuSE's formal press release. Visitors from Austria and Germany can pre-order SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional (€79.90), Professional Update (€49.90), Professional Campus (€49.90) and Personal (€49.90) editions from SuSE's online store or amazon.de.

A Review of SuSE Linux Office Desktop |
MadPenguin reviews the new SuSE Linux Office Desktop: "All in all, SuSE has struck a home run with this release as they have with all of their other offerings (even though it has those few things that need to be tended to in my opinion). Setup and configuration are simple and painless, performance is excellent, and with the included commercial software it makes for an excellent migration solution. For $129.00 USD, it is more expensive than it's peers, but with the added software and support that comes with it, it makes for a valuable package and addition to any business. With the open licensing involved with Linux, node for node, it is also less expensive to purchase than Windows. I highly recommend this product to anyone running a small to medium-sized business looking to make the move to Open source software." Read the rest of the review here.

SuSE Linux: Revisions Extend Linux's Reach |
eWEEK reports on the usability of SuSE Linux Office Desktop as a Windows replacement on corporate desktops: "SuSE's SuSE Linux Office Desktop combines an excellent Linux distribution with bundled software for interoperating with Windows applications and systems. It won't be the desktop Linux distribution to knock off Windows, but SuSE Linux Office Desktop demonstrates that Linux has gone much further than it has left to go. (+) Limited Windows application compatibility; good software installation tool; bundled software for resizing NTFS partitions. (-) Utility for accessing network shares didn't work; lacks VPN client; fit and finish are uneven in places. The review starts here.

SuSE Linux 8.1 Takes Our Challenge |
Open for Business continues the penguin shootout series with the review of SuSE Linux 8.1: "Overall, SuSE Linux 8.1 presents a nicely polished, powerful, and fairly easy to use desktop GNU/Linux distribution. Sadly, numerous issues that we encountered make it seem like a step backwards from SuSE Linux 8.0 in many ways. While organizations considering adopting SuSE for the first time should probably go with SuSE Linux 8.1, we see no reason for those using 8.0 to take any risks in moving up to this release." Review: SuSE Linux Office Desktop 8.1 |
ExtremeTech is highly impressed with the newly released SuSE Linux Office Desktop: "SuSE has done an excellent job with this release. It's not perfect (what OS is?), but it's got a lot of value to offer individuals or companies that really want to run Linux on the desktop while also being able to use Microsoft Office and other Windows applications. We think this is an obvious trend among Linux distros. We believe we'll see CodeWeaver's products popping up all over the place (Red Hat are you listening?). They're at a level of maturity now that makes them a good addition to any desktop distro that wants the added appeal of being able to run some Windows software." Product Announcement: SuSE Linux Office Desktop |
SuSE Linux today announced the availability of SuSE Linux Office Desktop: "SuSE Linux Office Desktop is intended for small companies looking for an easy, preconfigured desktop -- as well as for personal users with little or no Linux experience. With SuSE's new desktop, users get the stability and flexibility of Linux while having the full functionality and interoperability of accustomed applications -- users can continue to process Microsoft files in Linux or even install and utilize Office programs on the SuSE desktop." The announcement coincides with a brief review of the product by ITWeek: "SuSE's Linux Office Desktop makes migration to Linux easier, but inexperienced users may still need more support than is necessary for Windows. We found no major problems with hardware support, but users with unusual configurations may have configuration difficulties." Suse Linux Office Desktop is available from the SuSE Store for US$129.

Suse Linux 8.1 Professional Review |

The LinuxFormat magazine has made some of their magazine reviews available online - this one (in PDF) is a full review of SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional: "Over the last ten years, SuSE's distribution has matured into a polished product for the professional user. It is the fine detail which sets this distribution apart from the rest -- the little touches that make the system easier, and more enjoyable to use. 10 years ago, few dreamt that SuSE, and Linux, would be where they are today -- so, with that in mind, SuSE can look forward to the next ten years with a solid product base on which to build." Red Hat vs. SuSE Linux |
ZDNet sets out to compare the latest versions of Red Hat and SuSE Linux in terms of suitability as a Windows replacement. SuSE Linux is declared the winner: "SuSE Linux 8.1 is an extremely friendly choice for Windows users. If you're switching or dual-booting, make this distribution your first choice. SuSE Linux 8.1 offers the best-looking Linux desktop OS around. It's also easy to use and well organized, and it performs adequately. Its installation process is so smooth and uncluttered, in fact, that this alone merits a chance from Windows die-hards." Review: SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional |
Unix Review has reviewed SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional: "The package is more than worth the price for everything that you get with it. Yes, you could download everything, but really that's a bigger pain than it's worth. For the most part, the ease of administration and having everything right there at your fingertips makes SuSE more than worth the price of admission. As I've already mentioned, SuSE 8.1 isn't perfect. It's a great system, but it probably could have used a little extra polishing. Don't let that put you off, though. I've been very happy with almost everything about the 8.1 release so far, but that just makes the glitches that are there stand out more. SuSE has done a great job with 8.1, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what goodies are in store with their next release." The complete review.

Free Download of SuSE Linux 8.1 |
SuSE is now available for free. In line with SuSE's download policy, the entire 8.1 directory tree, equivalent to the SuSE's Professional Edition has been uploaded to SuSE's mirrors. As usual, there are no ISO images -- instead SuSE provides a method to install it on your computer directly from an FTP server. You will need the boot CD: boot.iso (18MB). Download it, boot from it and type 'install=ftp://ftp_server/directory' of your chosen mirror at the boot prompt. Read the README, SuSE's FTP installation howto and this site's earlier review describing the FTP installation process. SuSE's main FTP site itself does not carry the 8.1 directory so try one of the servers from this list of German or International mirrors. This is the first time that SuSE has provided the FTP edition so soon (about three weeks) after the official release; previously the delay was nearly two months! On a related note, The Register has published a review of SuSE 8.1 aptly named SuSE 8.1 illustrates MS' fear. Enjoy!

The SuSE Linux 8.1 review by ExtremeTech has been completed as scheduled and here is the conclusion: "If you like a desktop user environment and you are partial to KDE, SuSE 8.1 is worth trying out. SuSE's implementation of GNOME 2.0, however, seems to be an afterthought. GNOME's menus are not as consistent as they are in KDE. Getting general documentation about SuSE on the Web can be difficult, particularly compared to Mandrake and Red Hat. On the other hand, SuSE's support database is among the best in the industry. Although SuSE 8.1 Personal Edition is a strong contender, we like the other distributions in this week's lineup slightly better. We were put off by the way SuSE manages their software testing -- the company should involve the community more. SuSE also needs work with the overall GNOME setup. SuSE is easy to install, includes a great disk resizing wizard, is easy to set up, has a lot of useful software, and very good documentation. But it's just not as good as the others." The review starts here.

SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional Review |
This is a comprehensive review of SuSE Linux 8.1 by RatedPC: "SuSE Linux 8.1 Pro is the latest Linux distribution release for the desktop and corporate users. With a wide variety of desktop applications, a sleek desktop, a dead easy to use control center and strong focus on security, this is one of the best Linux distros we've tried to date." Includes plenty of screenshots as well as a bonus SuSE wallpaper. Read it here.

SuSE 8.1 Impressions |
This is a roundup of recently published online reviews, articles and opinions about SuSE Linux 8.1. Linux And Main: "SuSE 8.1 is a huge improvement over 8.0. It's a dandy distribution and but for the general trend in things Linux to require the latest hardware one I'd recommend." PenguinShell: "The look and feel of the SuSE installer is, quite simply, stunning and clean." UK Shopper: "This is the first Linux distribution [the reviewer] has seen that passes the grandmother test *and* does so without having been lobotomized first." LinuxLookup: "SuSE 8.1 has all of the features that make a great desktop OS." Also a couple of non-English language reviews: sueddeutsche.de (German) and ReTel.dk (Danish).

SuSE Live Evaluation CD |
SuSE's live evaluation CD is now available as a free download: "SuSE makes the live-eval version of SuSE Linux available for download as an ISO image. This version runs entirely from the bootable CD and is not installed on the hard disk. If you want to get to know SuSE Linux or test if your hardware is fully supported, the live-eval version is the right choice for you." Get it here: SuSE-8.1-LiveEval-i386.iso of from one of SuSE's German or International mirrors. SuSE does not provide complete ISO images of its distribution as a matter of company policy, but a full SuSE Linux 8.1 directory enabled for FTP install should be available in a not too distant future.

First Review of SuSE 8.1 Professional |
OSNews is the first web site to review the brand new SuSE Linux 8.1: "I think SuSE is very tempting, very sleek and sexy. It does have bugs and problems though. It is pretty fast, similarly to as fast Red Hat 8 is (they both use the same compiler and build flags, but Red Hat 8 uses the new, enhanced glibc). It has a pretty professional/workstation look into it. YaST2 and SaX2 can be better, but even as they are today blow most of Red Hat's preference panels away. On the other hand Red Hat's XFT font properties are no match to any other Linux distribution so far, while Red Hat has good integration for Qt and GTK+ toolkits, something that SuSE doesn't. Overall, I believe that both distributions complement each other and each one is better than the other on different parts of the OS." The complete review.

The result of 10 years of experience: SuSE Linux 8.1 |
Yes, it's coming - later this month. Amazon.de is already taking orders for the SuSE 8.1 Personal (€49.90) and Professional (€79.90) which is expected to ship on 25 September. What can we look forward to? This new SuSE 8.1 page is the first indication of the brand new release. A little skimpy in detail and in German only, but it will no doubt expand both in depth and in terms of language selection in the next few days. So take a peek and watch this space! (Thanks Philipp Frenzel for the link.)

SuSE 8.1 in October? |
MozillaQuest interviews Holger Dryoff, the head of SuSE's US operation: "As usual, we do beta tests with a restricted circle of people all over the world. We don't think that a public beta test would increase the quality of our products, it would just mean more work and effort to read all bug reports a thousand times, [rather] than 10 or 100 times." Is SuSE 8 SuPERB? |
A new SuSE Linux review by Open For Business: "When I booted the system I was greeted by a very nice customized boot menu that allowed me to easily select a special installation mode if necessary. While all distributions come with some kind of selection screen at this stage, SuSE Linux 8.0's was clean and to the point. After the system finished booting, I arrived at what I would say is the slickest looking operating system installer available. SuSE's installer has always been very refined looking, but they really pulled out all the stops in 8.0." The complete review.

Original Review: SuSE Linux 8.0 |
Before we start, here is the link: boot.iso. Click on it, then save it to your hard disk. By the time you finish reading this review the ISO image will have downloaded. It will only take a couple of minutes to burn the 16MB image onto a bootable CD, which upon boot, provides easy, logical and well-structured instructions. Several hours later, you will be greeted with a beautiful screen running on top of one of the most popular Linux distributions - SuSE Linux 8.0. Read on...

SuSE's Pro-Office CD now shipping |
SuSE Linux is now shipping the Pro-Office CD which: "...features the latest version of Sun Microsystems' StarOffice, the newest edition of the ultimate desktop environment KDE 3.0.1, as well as important patches for the SuSE Linux 8.0 operating system." At US$24.95, this must be the bargain of the year, even if you are not a SuSE user. For comparison, Sun Microsystems charges US$75.95 for the download edition of StarOffice 6 alone. Surely, the odds weigh heavily in SuSE's favour on this one. If you need the extra capabilities not found in OpenOffice, this is the entrance to the SuSE's online store.

SuSE 8.0 Free Download |
SuSE 8.0 now available for download. SuSE's policy of not providing downloadable ISO images has not changed, but FTP installation is possible as SuSE's FTP server now includes a complete 8.0 directory. How to go about installing the latest SuSE? Just follow this 10-step instruction. You will need to download six floppy images and use the first of them to boot your computer and start the installation; take a look at this README before proceeding. Alternatively (and this is new from SuSE), if you own a CD writer you can download a boot ISO image and create a bootable CD; get it here: boot.iso (16.5MB). Once you boot from either the floppies or the CD, you will need to load your network modules and configure networking before SuSE's installation program YaST starts and guides you through the rest of the process. Instead of the main FTP server, you should use one of the mirrors closer to you - here is the complete list of German and International mirrors. Have you been longing for that exciting weekend with SuSE? Here is your chance - enjoy!

Distribution Review: SuSE 8.0 |
There is something about SuSE 8.0 that does not make its reviewers happy: "As it stands now, SuSE 8.0 Professional is several steps below what I expected. If you've used SuSE in the past or are upgrading from an earlier version, this is probably a good choice. But for the novice user I'd recommend something else." The above is what the review at LinuxLookup concluded after putting the distribution through the usual tests, awarding SuSE a lowly 10 out of the possible 20 points. This follows a rather unhappy experience of the TuxReports team ("After only spending the weekend with the system we can't recommend this distribution on the PL133 chipset board.") and the Linux and Main's first look entitled So what? ("Following the install, we were forced to ask what we had gained. The sad answer was, not much.") Is SuSE going to respond to all the bad press? Any updates and fixes? Or will it remain behind the self-congratulatory obscurity of a commercial company, ignoring the flow of negative reports? We'll have to wait and see.

Distribution Review: SuSE 8.0 |
SuSE Linux 8.0 review by LinuxBeginner: "I have been running SuSE 8.0 as my primary workstation for a little over a week. With this being our first installation, and look at SuSE, I dare say we are impressed. SuSE has done an excellent job with the installation, it can be as easy as 1,2,3, or as detailed as you would like. The YaST (Yet another System Tool) system for both installation and system configuration is easy to use and powerful. Updates and patches are just a couple clicks away and adding software from the packaged CD's is a breeze. Hardware support is top notch. This is an excellent system for both the beginner and advanced user alike." The review, complete with screen shots can be accessed here.

Distribution Review: SuSE 8.0 |
Two reviews of SuSE 8.0. The Register: "[Installing] it was a delightfully boring affair which went off without a hitch. YaST2 has been sharpened a bit since 7.3, with cleaner splash and boot screens, and a Web-style links menu for installation options." NewsForge: "SuSE has once again raised the bar for Linux distributions, releasing what might be its best version ever. Whether you've never installed Linux before or you're an experienced Linux user, you'll find SuSE enjoyable to use."

Distribution Review: SuSE 8.0 |
SuSE 8.0 reviewed by DesktopLinux: "In looking at this entire distribution from SuSE, the installation went so easily that even my father could do it. The software that's shipped with this version is good - sorry, very good! But the bugs that still showed up in this distro made me feel somewhat disappointed. I hope SuSE spends its time well to remove these bugs, so that version 8.1 will be the ultimate distribution!" The complete review, entitled Good software, poor distro is available from the DesktopLinux team.

Distribution Release: SuSE 8.0 |
SuSE 8.0 now shipping. Yes, we are late with the news - according to some reports, SuSE 8.0 boxes have been on shelves of many European software retailers for weeks. However, the customary "live evaluation" version has only now appeared on SuSE's FTP server so if you are still hesitating about purchasing the product (US$40 for the Personal and US$80 for the Professional edition), you can try the "run-from-CD" version: liveeval-8.0.iso (676MB). Unofficially, the 8.0 directory tree should be up on the same FTP server around the middle of May. Quick links: SuSE 8.0 product page, SuSE's online store and a recently published review of the product's non-public beta release by Linux Journal entitled 'Zee Germans and Zee Penguins'.

SuSE 8.0 Package List |
More details about the upcoming SuSE release (officially on 22 April) are now available. The Personal Edition containing 3 CDROMS, 2 manuals and 60 days of installation support will cost US$39.95. The Professional Edition includes 7 CDROMS, 1 DVD, 3 manuals and 90 days of installation support and will retail for US$79.95. Visit the SuSE shop to order. You can view and compare the basic package list on our SuSE, Major Distributions and Top 10 Distributions pages. Refer to SuSE's web site for the complete list of Personal and Professional editions. Apart from KDE 3 and the Linux Kernel, SuSE 8.0 is not as up-to-date as its previous editions and it's likely to be better tested and more stable. Is it time to reach for that credit card?

Distribution Overview: SuSE 8.0 Beta |
SuSE's Linux Knowledge Portal has produced a short overview of the upcoming 8.0 release of SuSE Linux: "The installation is more simplified, hardware recognition much better. A new installation without special wishes can be had with just a few mouse clicks. You can have a running system in about 25 minutes." The full story can be read here. Also related to SuSE, LinuxPlanet has published a review of SuSE Linux eMail Server III: "As a user, I'd definitely love this product, its Webmail actually lets you create mail filters and auto-handling scripts, along with supporting some pretty cool calendar and scheduling options." Distribution Review: SuSE 7.3 PPC |
TuxPPC: "Considering all the positive aspects of SuSE Linux, rapidity, stability, ease of use, enormous amount of included software, the manuals and last but not least the free 60 day installation support, I think SuSE Linux has made it's way to being the best retail Linux distribution currently available for PowerPC machines." Distribution Review: SuSE 7.3 |
KillerTux.com writes: "In our opinion, SuSE Linux Professional 7.3 is an excellent product. The installation is fast. Hardware was detected correctly. For the first time in our website's history, all three of us have come down on the side of SuSE. Generally one of us is in favor of SuSE - no matter what they publish. Another one is a Mandrake user while the third one can't seem to get any Linux distribution to work as he'd like."" Read the full and comprehensive review of SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional here.

SuSE 7.2 Updates |
Thanks everybody for the feedback - much appreciated. I have included information about the latest SuSE (7.2) which will be out on 15 June 2001. It is interesting to note that the support has been increased to 60 days (up from 30 days for 7.1) while the price remained unchanged. Also updated the Slackware table - the versions of the packages, as presented in the table, are those included in the so-called "current" version and not the original 7.1.

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
