Distribution Release: Sorcerer 20040620 |
| The Sorcerer project has released a new Install/Rescue disk, version 20040620: "This new Install/Rescue disk is surgically clean and precise. It's smaller than the previous one because it contains only one Linux source version 2.6.7. Do you remember traditional device names? This release features a udev populated /dev mounted on ramfs. Since devfs is being deprecated from the Linux 2.6 kernel we are moving back to the old naming system. Its build system is powered by a 3rd generation, bug fixed, speed enhanced sorcery release name Sol. Second only to yourself it will be the light and warmth that brings life to your Sorcerer boxes.". The full announcement. Download: sorcerer-ia32-20040620.iso.bz2 (112MB).

Distribution Release: Sorcerer 20040512 |
| A new Sorcerer Install/Rescue ISO images has been released. What's new? "There is a new menu item on kernel menu to select before compiling a kernel. The new entry displays system information which may discover and report some of the installed hardware. It may save the SA a minute or two of exploring /proc when installing on unknown hardware. Finally, the pre-compiled Install/Rescue kernel is now linux 2.6.6. That may work to the advantage of system administrators trying to install Sorcerer on extremely new hardware if the only drivers that support it are in linux 2.6.x." Read the rest of the announcement. Download: sorcerer-ia32-20040513.iso.bz2 (174MB).

Distribution Release: Sorcerer 20040428 |
| It has been a while since we brought you news about a Sorcerer release, but that's because the developers don't publish a changelog and don't normally announce new releases. However, version 20040428 was announced on the distribution's mailing list: "I have rolled out a new Install/Rescue disk. The importance of libpcap is that ppp now requires it. In addition to more than some 12 spells on the Install/Rescue disk being updated the new disk has four text editors to choose from: elvis/vi, nano, jed and joe. Excited yet? Okay how about being able to install: linux,v2.6 or linux,v2.6-grsecurity or linux,v2.4 or linux,v2.4-grsecurity straight from the Install/Rescue disk? Choose only one of course." Download from here: sorcerer-ia32-20040428.iso.bz2 (139MB).

Sorcerer Linux Review |
| OSNews reviews the source-based Sorcerer distribution: "One of the strengths of Sorcerer is the ability to quickly and easily update your box with the latest application versions. However, this can cause some commercial apps to no longer work because they require an older set of library files. It is possible to get around this problem by manually installing the older libraries, and whether you do this would depend on how much you need the application. Sometimes for us it is just easier to have a box running Red Hat, Mandrake, or SUSE and keep the commercial applications running on there." Read the full 3-page review with screenshots.

Sorcerer in the News |
| For all those who wrote in requesting clarification on the status of Sorcerer GNU/Linux, here is a nice summary, courtesy of Linux Weekly News: "Last week we reported that Sorcerer GNU/Linux (SGL) was no longer available. Numerous people wrote in with additional information, so this week we have a more complete story to tell. It's the kind of story that illustrates that a good open source project is difficult (if not impossible) to kill." You can read the full story here, but to sum it up, the project continues under the original name, while a second, more ambitious fork, called Lunar Penguin, continues a separate development. The LWN article has a good summary; we will of course monitor both projects, adding a separate Lunar Penguin page shortly.

Sorcerer not Dead |
| "Sorcerer GNU/Linux is not dead", according to the joined statement released by the Sorcerer team: "It was only through the extraordinary efforts of a very committed group of people that SGL was able to remain alive." The statement concludes: "What you are seeing here is not the death of SGL. You are seeing the beauty and power of truly free software at it's very best. Sorcerer GNU/Linux lives on, and will continue to do so for a very long time" The full signed statement can be read on the Sorcerer web site. The project seems in no danger of collapsing, so go ahead and download this extraordinary distribution, as reviewed here!

Sorcerer in Transition |
| The story goes like this: Kyle Sallee, the creator and lead developer of Sorcerer GNU Linux announced last month that he would no longer be able to devote himself fully to this project. He also closed the Sorcerer web site over the weekend. Nevertheless, some of the Sorcerer contributors and spell maintainers are keeping the project alive. Currently there seem to be two forks of the project. One of them, while keeping the original name unchanged, has set up a new web site, while the second fork has renamed the project to Lunar Penguin. There isn't much difference between the two at this stage and it remains to be seen whether the two projects merge or whether they'll go separate ways. Both projects offer simple hacks to modify your existing Sorcerer installation to provide for updates. The original mailing lists were independent of the project and remain active. Sorcerer GNU Linux has gained a large number of followers over the last few months and risen to the number one spot in our page hit ranking. There seems to be no danger of the projects disappearing and DistroWatch will keep an eye on the developments.

Distribution Review: Sorcerer |
| LinuxWorld reviews Sorcerer GNU Linux: "Sorcerer allows you to build and maintain a Linux system based on the very latest stable source code for each component, from the kernel to X, compiled on and for your machine. Unfortunately, Sorcerer's magic might vanish soon." With the increasing user base of this distribution and the associated pressure on the original creator and maintainers, the software database (grimoire) is going to be maintained by volunteers. The logistics of this transition period are still being worked out and you can check out the discussion on the official mailing list and the recently created Unofficial SGL Forum. |

Distribution Review: Sorcerer |
| NVMAX.com reviews Sorcerer GNU Linux: "I like this distribution! Although there are many questions I have about it, it is a good, solid Linux distribution; it is not for the Linux newbie. It did show me that I am more comfortable in Linux then I thought I was. I was able to get everything up and running" You can read the entire review, complete with screen shots, installation guide and some reviewer's suggestions on the MVMAX web site.

Distribution Release: Sorcerer 20020126 |
| The latest release of Sorcerer GNU Linux is 20020126: "Today's release of the Install/Rescue ISO9660 is nearly identical to yesterdays except minus exim and plus a recompiled kernel and modules. A postfix spell is in the grimoire and it tests out fine for both sending and receiving email." Apart from Postfix (1.1.2), new updates include: Apache (1.3.23), Gaim (0.51), LVM (1.0.2) and WINE (20020122). Downloads: sorcerer-20020126.iso.bz2 (81.4MB), sorcerer-20020125-to-20020126.xdelta (2.7MB). Also, a new tutorial on configuring XFree86 on a Sorcerer installation has been made available here. In the meantime, Sorcerer has surged to the second position in our page hit ranking following the widely publicised review. Gentoo Linux, which is another source-based distribution, has also been climbing, a noteworthy trend indicating that there is plenty of interest in these CIY (compile-it-yourself) Linux distributions.

Sorcerer Linux Site Inaccessible |
| It seems that the Slashdot effect has rendered the Sorcerer web site completely inaccessible - sorry about that. I was assured that they would not mind getting slashdotted, but the effect still caught them off-guard. Not much we can do until they recover; in the meantime, some links that you can try: Sorcerer's Freshmeat page, Sorcerer's DaveCentral page, mailing lists and Google's cached pages: Sorcerer main page, about Sorcerer, installation FAQs, general FAQs and newbies' FAQs. The current ISO image can be downloaded from the ibiblio.org server: sorcerer.iso.bz2 (81.1MB). Some quick statistical information from 18 January: The DistroWatch site received a total of 2.04 million requests, served 1.65 million files, a total of 63,195 complete pages and moved nearly 6.2 GB of data in just one day. More statistics are available here. Slashdot has brought many a bigger site down to its knees, but DistroWatch, hosted courtesy of Linux From Scratch is coping extremely well.

Sorcerer Review Feedback |
| Thanks everybody for taking the time to read and comment on our review of Sorcerer GNU Linux published yesterday and reported by all major news sites( NewsForge, Slashdot, LinuxToday and others). Both Sorcerer's and our servers were hard to access for a few hours, but everything is back to normal now. Just a few quick comments. Sorry for not mentioning ROCK Linux, which is another source-based distribution. Many Debian users suggested that their favourite distribution has much of the same functionality of updating packages and why this might be true to a certain degree, I would still maintain that Sorcerer does it a lot more elegantly. Also, FreeBSD does or used to have a similar software update feature, something that I was not aware of. Many people suggested that we take a look at Gentoo Linux, another source-based distribution. It might be a better known distribution of the two, but we decided to review Sorcerer, which is a complete and final release as opposed to Gentoo, which seems to be stuck in a perpetual release-candidate state where it has been for a very long time. The review has affected our Page Hit Ranking statistics - the Sorcerer page was hit more than 2000 times in the last 24 hours which caused it to soar to the 4th spot.

Distribution Release: Sorcerer 20020114b |
| Sorcerer GNU Linux news: "sorcerer-20020114.iso is ready for download, and the xdelta patch this time is from 20020112 to 20020114, entirely skipping 20020113. An exploit was discovered in glibc. The glibc on this Install/Rescue has a patch for the exploit in glob.c. Every box running SGL will have its glibc patched on its next sorcery update, so no worries. :)" This release also includes updates to the latest versions of Pine (4.44) and iptables (1.2.5). Download link: sorcerer-20020114b.iso.bz2 (75.8 MB). |

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
