NEW • Distribution Release: Slax 6.1.0 |
| Tomáš Matějíček has released Slax 6.1.0, a Slackware-based desktop live CD featuring the latest KDE 3.5 desktop. From the changelog: "This should be the last Slax 6.x, no more new features will be added to Slax 6.x, only bug fixes. Changes: added fake XDM to 002-xorg, so it will start Fluxbox if KDE is not present - this is mainly useful if you use 'build slax' and you only include Slax Core and Slax Xorg; upgraded to Slackware 'current' as of the latest changes before KDE 4 packages were added; added new wallpaper; fixed many Fluxbox-related bugs in order to make 'Slax Xorg' partly independent; now you can see (even in Fluxbox) accurate (preferred) screen resolution and it plays a start-up sound too." Download (MD5) the live CD from here: slax-6.1.0.iso (191MB, MD5). |

NEW • Distribution Release: Slax 6.0.0 |
| Tomáš Matějíček has announced the final release of SLAX 6.0.0: "SLAX 6 is released. What's new? First, SLAX is officially released in two forms - ISO and TAR. The ISO format (labelled as 'SLAX for CD') is to be burnt to a CD, while the TAR format (labelled as 'SLAX for USB') is for all who need to run SLAX directly from USB media or from a disk. Simply unzip the tar archive directly to your device (to its root directory, it will create 'boot' and 'slax' subdirectories). That's almost all; you only need to make it bootable. For that purpose, navigate to the 'boot' directory and find bootinst.sh (if you are in Linux) or bootinst.bat (if you are in Windows). Run it. Linux users will need to use root account for that. The script will set up the device to be bootable. If you are using 'SLAX for USB', you will notice that all the changes you made are permanent." NEW • Development Release: SLAX 6.0.0 RC7 |
| Tomáš Matějíček has announced a new release candidate for SLAX 6.0, a Slackware-based live CD: "My ISP finally fixed the line so here is SLAX 6 release candidate 7. While you may think it's better than rc6, it may have more issues. I'm testing new block size in Squashfs, so I don't focus on the KDE settings, etc. (By the way, it's using KDE 3.5.8 and kernel 2.6.23.) Moreover I've fixed many bugs in Linux-Live scripts, but my fixes may introduce other problems. So here you have several ISO files with Slax 6 rc7. Please test the speed of the system with different block sizes and let me know in case you believe I should not use the preferred block size of 256 kB." SLAX 6 rc5 still includes Linux Kernel 2.6.21.5 and KDE 3.5.7. The Slackware base has been upgraded to Slackware 12.0. Klaptopdaemon has been recompiled in order to show the tray icon properly. SLAX now shutdowns properly, while it did reboot instead of shutdown in rc4. Removal of modules by using SLAX Module Manager is fixed, it did allow a busy aufs branch to be removed in rc4, which may cause troubles..." NEW • Development Release: SLAX 6.0.0 RC4 |
| The fourth release candidate of SLAX 6.0.0, a Slackware-based mini live CD, is available for download and testing: "This is SLAX 6 release candidate 4, including a few modules and 27 languages. SLAX 6 rc4 includes Linux Kernel 2.6.21.5, KDE 3.5.7 and the newest technologies from Linux-Live, Squashfs and Slackware current. Language modules: simply download the directory for your language and copy it over SLAX, overwriting the original initrd.gz file. Firefox and Thunderbird modules: these are created from Slackware packages, but I modified them, because Mozilla applications look so ugly in Linux. Now they are very nice." Please see the announcement and changelog for further details. Download: slax6rc4.iso (198MB, MD5).

NEW • Distribution Release: SLAX 5.1.8 |
| Tomáš Matějíček has announced the release of SLAX 5.1.8, the last version of the SLAX 5 series: "I'm happy to announce the immediate availability of SLAX 5.1.8. This release includes a SLAX-boot CD (only a 5MB ISO image) designed to boot SLAX from USB keys in case your BIOS doesn't support it. Users can just plug in the USB key with SLAX data to boot from this CD and it can also be used to boot SLAX directly from an ISO file. Changes made in 5.1.8: added KDE 3.5.4, recompiled with some Slackware 11 fixes; better handling of booting from USB devices; added NTFS-3g to fully support writing to NTFS partitions; added slaxsave.zip to SLAX CD, containing pre-built loop file systems." | After two release candidates, Tomas Matejicek announced the availability of SLAX 5.1.7: "The final version of SLAX 5.1.7 has been released. Compared to 5.1.6, the new version fixes some bugs regarding the 'load' cheatcode, it adds and upgrades several boot options (like noswap, noauto, from= and changes=/dev...) and added new cleanup scripts to correctly handle shutdown procedures." Check the list of changes since 5.1.6 here. Download: slax-5.1.7.iso (196MB, MD5). Update: SLAX 5.1.7 was renamed to 5.1.7b on July 27; the SLAX developer had 5.1.7 "reuploaded to FTP as 5.1.7b (http mirror was broken somehow and this is the only way for me to refresh it)." |

NEW • Distribution Release: SLAX 5.1.6 |
| Barely three days after version 5.1.5, the SLAX project has announced the availability of SLAX 5.1.6: "A new version of SLAX is available. The main added feature is NTFS write support. The default behaviour didn't change, SLAX still mounts NTFS volumes read-only. But you can mount it manually with read-write support by using the command 'ntfsmount'. It allows you to safely edit all existing files on NTFS partitions. You can also create or delete files, this will either succeed or it will be refused. Please note that refusal to do an operation does not mean the volume will be corrupted. Actually it means just the opposite: it's a guarantee that your data is safe." See the latest SLAX changelog for further details. Download: slax-5.1.6.iso (192MB, MD5). |

NEW • Distribution Release: SLAX 5.1.5 |
| A new version of SLAX has been released: "I'm happy to let you know that a new SLAX release is ready. This time you can use some cool new features. Added 'noload' cheatcode to disable loading of any specified modules. This affects all modules on the SLAX CD, including /base and /modules, so using 'noload=*kde*' will disable loading of all modules with 'kde' in the name. It's useful with copy2ram cheatcode, because any unused module is not copied to RAM. Added 'ramsize' cheatcode to specify maximum memory for SLAX to store changes, downloaded files, etc." Read the rest of the changelog for a detailed list of new features and changes. A Week with SLAX 4.1.4 |
| Barney Matthews from tuxs.org has tried the latest version of SLAX and these are his experiences: "The first thing that caught my eye about the DistroWatch announcement on the release of SLAX 4.1.4 was that it included KDE 3.3 which had only been out a few weeks. I wanted to try out KDE 3.3 and a live CD like SLAX is a great way to do it, so I went over to the SLAX website to download the ISO. Whilst I was at the website I noticed the SLAX slogan 'SLAX - your pocket OS'. This got me thinking, can you really survive with just a live CD (and a small one at that) as your only distro, in a 'MandrakeMove' type way? I decided to challenge myself to try for a week." At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
