Development Release: Skolelinux Sarge Pr06 |
| A new development preview of Skolelinux has been released. From the changelog: "A lot of time has passed since the last pre-release, and some bug fixes have been done. Also, to get more educational applications onto the CD, some of the developer tools are removed. There is no image for the PowerPC this time, I hope to get back with more info in that department later on." Download: debian-edu_sarge-i386-pr06.iso (699MB, MD5). Skolelinux Interview by Waldo Bastian |
| The KDE Edutainment Project has published an interview with the developers of Skolelinux: "We have made a simple tool for user administration that we wrote as part of the project. It has been programmed three times, and now I think we got it right. The user administration tool is part of Webmin. We have also made an easy-to-use backup tool. School sysadmins also use two other web-enabled tools for configuring parts of the system. The sysadmins need to configure the DHCP server somewhat, depending on how they use the LTSP server. They also need to configure CUPS for printing. They can also resize the disks with LVM which is mandatory on a Skolelinux installation. I think there are about 5-6 tools the sysadmins really need to know. The other options are pre-configured." The complete interview.

Review: Skolelinux pr40 |
| The many little-known Linux distributions tend to get ignored by reviewers, so it's always a pleasure to link to a review of one of the "neglected" distributions. This one, by NeoLink Computers, reviews Norway's Skolelinux: "Skolelinux I'm sure serves it's purpose, and I'm sure it serves it's purpose very well. This distro is used in Norwegian schools and saves the schools money. I give kudos to the person or persons who got this project going and I hope it continues. As far as using Skolelinux on my box here however, I will have to decline. I know I can use the apt-get tool to update my distro, but with all the things that Skolelinux is missing, it would take too long for me. Also, having it not able to dual boot puts a bit of a damper on its functionality." The complete review with several screenshots.

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
