Development Release: Shift Linux 0.6.5 |
| Neowin has announced the release of Shift Linux 0.6.5, a preview version of the live CD image set based on Ubuntu 8.04 beta: "Shift Linux 0.6.5 is the first public preview release of Shift Linux One. The version number may be confusing, but the team is focused on a solid 1.0 release soon. Shift Linux comes in 3 different flavors - GNOME, Lite, and KDE. All three are based on brand-new Ubuntu Hardy Beta 1 packages. We have also added in our own customizations such as the Shift original theme in GNOME, present in 0.5 and 0.6, Shift Linux wallpaper, and other packages not included in the Ubuntu release, such as GnomeDo, as seen in the screenshots. This release is installable. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified." Here is the brief release announcement. Distribution Release: Shift Linux 0.6.2 |
| Barney Tormey has announced the release of Shift Linux 0.6.2, an Ubuntu-based distribution developed by the Neowin.net community: "Shift Linux 0.6 released today. There are three editions released at this time: Shift Linux 0.6 GNOME, Shift Linux 0.6 KDE4, and Shift Linux 0.6 Lite (for older computers). Shift Linux Lite contains two less resource hogging window managers (Xfce and Fluxbox), but will have a full compliment of packages and utilities. All three versions of Shift Linux 0.6 are fully installable (tested and verified). Shift Linux has moved away from its Morphix base and is now based on Ubuntu. This version incorporates Firefox 3 (GranParadiso), OpenOffice.org, new themes, and a tested installer. We've also updated to KDE4. This is a transition version as we move away from Morphix and port over our previous versions to Ubuntu." Here is the complete release announcement. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
