BSD Release: NetBSD 5.0.1 |
| Soren Jacobsen has announced the release of NetBSD 5.0.1: "The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce that version 5.0.1 of the NetBSD operating system is now available. NetBSD 5.0.1 is the first security/critical update of the NetBSD 5.0 release branch. It represents a selected subset of fixes deemed critical in nature for security or stability reasons. Please note that all fixes in security/critical updates (i.e., NetBSD 5.0.1, 5.0.2, etc.) are cumulative, so the latest update contains all such fixes since the corresponding minor release. These fixes will also appear in future minor releases (i.e., NetBSD 5.1, 5.2, etc.), together with other less-critical fixes and feature enhancements." See the detailed release notes for a complete list of all changes, security fixes and known issues. Installation CD images for 42 processor architectures are available for download from the project's FTP mirrors; quick links to the i386 and amd64 CD images (SHA512): i386cd-5.0.1.iso (229MB, torrent), amd64cd-5.0.1.iso (242MB, torrent). |

Development Release: NetBSD 5.0 RC4 |
| Soren Jacobsen has announced the availability of the fourth release candidate for NetBSD 5.0, a BSD operating system designed to run on a large number of processor architectures: "Today, we have two things to be happy about. First, the fourth release candidate of NetBSD 5.0 is available for download. Second, this announcement, like RC3's, coincides with an important birthday: that of Billy West. Below are some highlighted changes since RC3: added the RLIMIT_AS resource, which limits the total address space available to processes; improved NFS server stability; FFS improvements; a fix for a pf(4) DoS; re(4) now works with the RealTek 8111C, which is found on many current motherboards with Intel chipsets. As usual, src/doc/CHANGES-5.0 has the full details." Here is the brief release announcement. As usual, CD images for 41 processor architectures are available from NetBSD's FTP server and its mirrors. Two quick links to the i386 and amd64 installation CD images: i386cd.iso (229MB), amd64cd.iso (241MB). |

Development Release: NetBSD 5.0 RC2 |
| Soren Jacobsen has announced the availability of the second release candidate for NetBSD 5.0: "On behalf of the NetBSD Release Engineering team, I am proud to announce that the second release candidate of NetBSD 5.0 is now available for download. Since RC1, 103 tickets were pulled up. Interested readers can find the details of these tickets in src/doc/CHANGES-5.0. RC2 represents a great deal of progress over RC1, but with that amount of change, increased time for testing is required. To put it bluntly, there will definitely be a third release candidate. We are aware of a number of release-blocking issues, but it is important that we get a jump on testing the many changes made since RC1." Here is the brief release announcement. As always, installation CD images for 40 processor architectures are available for download from these mirrors; quick links to the i386 and amd64 CD images: i386cd.iso (238MB), amd64cd.iso (252MB). |

NetBSD 2.0 Rendezvous |
| ONLamp has published an interview with the developers of NetBSD: "We are planning to have more frequent releases. We have made a lot of mistakes in the past that have delayed the release schedules, but hopefully we have learned from them. We were very aggressive about committing large sub-system upgrades just before a release, and that added a lot of bugs to the code that needed to be fixed for the release. This not only delays the releases, but also adds extra work, since each bug needs to be tested on head and pulled up via patches by the release engineering group." The 2-page interview starts here.

After tagging NetBSD-2.0_RC1, there have been a few pullups that fix some issues with Linux emulation under NetBSD/i386 as well as some installation problems under some of the arm-based ports. This means that the final release of NetBSD 2.0 will need to be pushed back approximately 1-2 weeks to allow for testing of this Release Candidate. As usual, binary snapshots will soon be available on the release engineering FTP server." Read here for more information.

Development Release: NetBSD 2.0 RC1 |
| Moving closer towards the release of version 2.0, the NetBSD project has announced the first release candidate of NetBSD 2.0: "The NetBSD Releng Team has announced that the first Release Candidate for NetBSD 2.0 (ie NetBSD-2.0_RC1) has been tagged. This is a major milestone in the much anticipated release of NetBSD 2.0: from now on, any pullups must address some form of show-stopping issue to even be considered. The NetBSD Project encourages all users to test the binary snapshots that will soon be available on the release engineering ftp server. If no pullups are necessary, then the 2.0 release should occur around the middle of October." The full release announcement. There are no ISO images for download (except for these unofficial ones), but the product can be installed directly from the NetBSD Release Engineering Server or mirrors by following these instructions.

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
