Development Release: eMoviX 0.9.0rc1 |
| eMoviX is a micro Linux distro meant to be embedded in a CD together with all video/audio files you want, so that the CD will be able to boot and automagically play all of its own files. eMoviX 0.9.0rc1 is out: "This 0.9.0rc1 version contains several improvements and bugfixes and most likely, since it has been already thoroughly tested, it will become shortly the new stable version. All features that I meant to implement in eMoviX when I first started the project (many more, actually!) are now fully developed so this same version will also probably become the final 1.0 eMoviX version." Read the complete announcement and eMoviX documentations and future features. Download: emovix-0.9.0rc1.tar.gz (10.8MB).

Development Release: MoviX2 0.3.1rc2 |
| The MoviX project has released MoviX2, version 0.3.1rc2: "Just a few words about the new MoviX2 release: a few bugs found in rc1 have been fixed (e.g. remotes and the cle266 tv-out) and a few new features have been introduced (support for selecting the NIC to use when more than one is found, support for more wireless and PCMCIA cards, support for modifying the size of the MPlayer GUI font and to select the default interface to be started at the boot). Please give it a try and report the problems you find!" Download: movix2-0.3.1rc2.tar.gz (42.3MB). There are also links to articles on installing MoviX on USB pens and on configuring Irman remote in MoviX(2) on the projects' web site. Slideshow from LinuxBeta.com.

Development Release: MoviX2 0.3.1rc1 |
| The MoviX project has released MoviX2, version 0.3.1rc1: "This new 0.3.1rc1 release is a major re-writing of the MoviX2 distro. In particular, all new features of MoviX are now also inside MoviX2, and you can actually access the MoviX menu itself from within MoviX2, that is good because it means you are now able to take advantage of the MPlayer 'X' drivers from the MoviX menu... In short, now in MoviX2 you can use three different interfaces... Note that this means that from now on the only reason to use the good old MoviX distro is if you want to boot on a PC with not-so-much RAM (i.e. lower than 128MB)." Download: movix2-0.3.1rc1.tar.gz (43.6MB). Read the full news on the MoviX web site.

Distribution Release: MoviX 0.8.3 |
| A new version of MoviX is out: "MoviX 0.8.3 fixes the little boot problem that was recently found in 0.8.2. Since it seems bad to release a new version just to fix a single file, a few interesting features and fixes were also added: the 'install.pl' script is now able to install automatically MoviX on a HD partition and make it bootable (but do not use this script to install MoviX on a partition shared with another OS!); when booting from HD, most files will not be loaded in RAM but rather used from the HD, so that you'll get full MoviX features already with 64MB of RAM; Russian and French menus have been updated; a Russian version of the README has been added...." Distribution Release: MoviX 0.8.0 |
| MoviX 0.8.0 has been released: "After exactly 8 months of tests and prereleases, the stable 0.8.0 version of MoviX is finally available! Hope it won't take 9 months for 0.9.0 ;-) There are a few important changes from 0.8.0rc2: better remotes support; reduced system size; Italian translations (thanks to Walter Sammarchi). Till now only Hauppauge and Logitech remotes are supported. Everyone is invited to send to me or post on the forums configuration files for more remotes. This should be trivial for (Win)Lirc users, and I'll post soon a tutorial for all others. A new pre-release series should be out by the weekend, less stable but with new nice features, so stay tuned!" Find out more on the distribution's project page. Download: movix-0.8.0.tar.gz (14.3MB).

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
