Interview: Bernd Eller, LRs GNU/Linux |
| Linuxzone.cz has interviewed Bernd Eller, the project leader of LRs GNU/Linux: "I started with the development of LRs in January, 2001. My goals for LRs were found real fast too: it should be able to install a processor-optimized, complete Linux From Scratch with X and KDE, plus a few console-based utilities overnight. My selection of packages was first limited to all the packages I absolutely needed, which was soon not enough..." This is the original interview (in Slovak) by Linuxzone.cz and this is the English translation on the LRs distribution's web site.

LRs-Linux is Back |
| The LRs-Linux web site has been saying it for a while, but now the project team has a new release to prove it: version 0.3.0rc2 has been made available for download and testing. Get the ISO image here: LRs-Linux-V.0.3.0-rc2.iso (370MB). Major new features in this version include use of GCC 3.2 to compile the source code, KDE 3.0.3, XFree 4.2.1, Apache 2.0.40 and other package updates as well as idum, a new package management software. LRs - Linux Project Closed |
| The LRs - Linux project has been closed. Not much detail is given on the distribution's home page, but it's ironic that the project is over soon after it was given space and exposure in the latest edition of the UK-based Linux Magazine. LRs - Linux was an interesting project based on Linux From Scratch with automated installation, inclusive of X-window and KDE and without the requirement to have an existing Linux installation. It seems that, as the developers' enthusiasm evaporated so did the promising project.

Distribution Release: LRs-Linux 0.2.6 |
| LRs-Linux 0.2.6 released. LRs-Linux is a source distribution based on Linux From Scratch, except that packages compile directly from a freely downloadable CD so you don't need to have a working Linux system prior to installation. Also unlike Linux From Scratch, the installation is mostly automated and it includes GUI packages and a desktop environment (KDE 3.0). Get the ISO image from here: LRs-Linux-V.0.2.6.iso. To find out more, visit the project's home page (available in English, German, French, Italian and Turkish) and its Installation Guide. If you'd like to support the project, you can purchase the official CD for €15. As alway, our LRS-Linux page is up-to-date.

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
