Japan's Alpha Systems has released Accelerated KNOPPIX 1.0, a fast-booting variant of the popular KNOPPIX live CD. Reviews: A Knewbie's Knoppix Rescue Adventure |
This is a great story of a non-technical user trying out KNOPPIX and falling in love with it - to the point that she is ready to give up on Windows completely: "I've been impressed and happily surprised at how much fun it has been to use and learn Knoppix and other Linux software. Even with my systems that have a lot of old hardware (which would be all of them), I've been amazed at how much is recognized immediately when I experiment with installing different operating systems. I'm still running Windows 2K Pro on my main system, but I am slowly whittling away at the need to have it at all. So if you think it's too hard for you, think again, and give Knoppix a whirl. If I can do it, anyone can. And that's the truth." Read the rest of the story at Groklaw. |

Reviews: Fun with Knoppix |
Ars Technica has published a 3-page story about the popular Knoppix live CD, including an interview with the author of Knoppix Hacks Kyle Rankin, and a developer's corner with tools, tips and tweaks: "There is a common misconception among people who have heard of Knoppix that it is only for Linux users. This perception couldn't be further from the truth. Knoppix, as demonstrated by the author, is an extremely useful tool regardless of your preferred operating system. This book is for anyone who has had to fix the computer of friends or family; the system administrator who has ever had to resuscitate a lifeless machine; even the average home user who's curious to try something new without replacing what they already have." A Comparison of Three LiveCD Distros |
Barney Matthews has published a comparative review of Knoppix 3.4, PCLinuxOS 7a and Damn Small Linux 0.72 on tuxs.org: "Live Linux CDs allow people to test Linux or try a distribution without any hard drive installation, or carry Linux around in their pocket to use on any computer. I have picked the top ranked Live CD from DistroWatch for each of these three tasks to review/compare. Knoppix 3.4 is the 'test Linux' live CD, PCLinuxOS 7a is the 'try before it before installing' live CD and Damn Small Linux is the 'pocket Linux' live CD. It should be noted each of these live CDs can perform every task above and that there are many other equally good live CDs - these are just the ones I have picked..." Install Knoppix Linux, Keep Windows Installation |
Tom's Hardware is highly impressed with the Knoppix live CD: "Knoppix is truly one of the greatest products that the open-source community has produced. As a learning tool, Knoppix is invaluable. If you are learning Linux, you can practice without messing up your computer. If you are a hacker, Knoppix provides all sorts of security, and system recovery tools. This CD, in the right hands, can cause a lot of destruction. Remember to always use your powers for good." The 6-page review starts here.

Knoppix - Instant Gratification |
It is safe to say that the Debian-based Knoppix live CD has raised the bar of Linux distribution standards to a new level, especially with its automatic hardware detection and on-the-fly decompression. Knoppix is commonly used as an emergency rescue disk, as a Linux demo CD, as a tool to test a new computer before purchase or as a utility to read password-protected Microsoft Word documents on a Windows partition. It can even be used as a full-blown Linux distribution for every-day tasks. Robert Storey explains the reason why Knoppix has been given a permanent home on his computer's hard drive and why he never leaves home without it.

Knoppix For Newbies |
KNOPPIX.net is featuring a review of Knoppix for new users: "Once Knoppix has fully loaded itself, you are looking at something which should not seem too exotic for any Windows user. By default Knoppix loads the KDE desktop manager which is very intuitive and easy to use. On the bottom of your screen, the task bar allows you to launch a number of applications and if you click on the 'K' on the lower left you will have a menu not unlike the one you are used to. Play around, try a couple of things, and get used to how everything is organized. The only thing which will look very different to you is the application with the icon "sea-shell in front of the screen" on your task bar: this launches the 'Konsole' terminal emulator." Klaus Knopper: "I Never Had a Windows PC" |
PcTechTalk interviews Klaus Knopper of Knoppix: "The Knoppix CD edition has a little problem with disk space, mostly caused by well-meant suggestions about useful programs to include. Software tends to continuously grow, so, since the CD is already full with 1.8GB of software (compressed, physical space 700MB), I have to remove some software on every new release. This is sad, because once you got used to a program, even if it is "just a game" for testing the graphics and sound capabilities of new hardware, you will miss it once it is gone, and of course many people complain if their favorite program is gone in a new release. Fabian Franz, author of some of the packages on Knoppix, is currently working on a modularized version of Knoppix, based on Debian meta packages and Knoppix-specific packages. So, you could use a build system to build your own version and include just the packages you want." The rest of the interview is here.

This release was immediately followed by version 3.2-2003-07-26 with the following updates: "Bug fix: downgraded pppconfig from 2.2 to 2.1 to fix DNS problem with DSL; use 12pt font in mozilla; latex-ttf-fonts for lyx-qt; added another Audigy PCI ID -> emu10k1 driver; changed keyboard layout in XFree to pc105 for better German keyboard; support in non-KDE desktops." Kneat Knoppix! |
KDE News gives the latest Knoppix a test drive and finds the experience overwhelmingly positive: "Finally, it worked! It installed, booted, went directly into KDE3 and I suddenly have a fully functional Knoppix system on my backup machine and it looks great. I love it. I totally love it. In fact, I keep the CD in my purse and bring it around with me to show people. It's little geeky me, but it's great and people are wowed. This is Linux like they never knew existed. I'm dispelling the 'Command Line Mode Only' picture with this one CD and I'm doing a great job of it." The full story.

Knoppix: A Small Distro that Solves Big Problems |
IBM developerWorks is highly impressed with Knoppix as expressed in this article entitled Knoppix gives bootable, one-disk Linux: "I'm enthusiastic about Knoppix, and I'm far from alone. I've heard from dozens of administrators and network managers with such affection for Knoppix that they 'wouldn't leave home without it.' Any Linux professional or hobbyist operating in an environment that's at all dynamic -- even just an occasional need to run on others' equipment -- should try out a copy of Knoppix. The cost to do so is vanishingly low, and the potential benefits and convenience are quite high." Visit this page to read the complete overview of Knoppix.

Interview with Klaus Knopper of Knoppix |
OSNews talks to Klaus Knopper about his CD-ROM based Linux distribution known as Knoppix: "How does the Knoppix boot process differ from a conventional hard drive based Linux install? Klaus Knopper: A Ramdisk is used as root file system. The first part consists in actually identifying the CD-ROM (loading SCSI drivers) where the CD is located, and mounting the compressed loopback file KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX. Then a script is run for identifying all supported hardware components, generating links in /dev and config files. After that, the boot process does not differ much from a harddisk-installed version." The four-part interview starts here.

Interview: Klaus Knopper, Creator of Knoppix |
Knoppix has taken the world by storm. Barely known outside its borders only a few months ago, it has suddenly become the focus of Linux media as a great way of introducing anyone to Linux. Unlike other distributions, Knoppix does not need to be installed on a computer's hard disk - it runs directly from the CD. All you need to do is to place it into your CD-ROM drive and restart the computer. A few minutes later you will have a fully working Linux workstation with all major desktop environments, server software, multimedia, office and productivity applications you can think of. This amazing product is a brainchild of Klaus Knopper. Klaus was kind enough to take time off his schedule and agreed to answer a few questions for the benefit of DistroWatch readers. The interview...

Knoppix Hard Disk Installation HOWTO |
KNOPPIX is one of those miracles that clearly demonstrate the superiority of open source software over proprietary systems. Do yourself a favour and download the ISO image: KNOPPIX_V3.1-31-10-2002-EN.iso (697MB). Burn it onto a CD, boot from it and be prepared to be amazed. A full working Linux system with KDE, GNOME, development and server software running directly from the CD, but you wouldn't even notice if it weren't for the noise of the spinning disk. Most importantly, give the CD to a friend who has never tried Linux and stress that no installation is required. While the concept is not new, the implementation is outstanding. And if you, like many others, happen to fall in love with the Debian-based KNOPPIX, it can be installed on your hard drive in a few easy steps, as per these instructions in English, French or German. Further information and discussion on pclinuxonline and Slashdot.

KNOPPIX in DistroWatch |
I stopped counting how many requests I received to include KNOPPIX on these pages -- that's despite the fact that this very page states that CD-based distributions are currently excluded. But because of the enormous popularity that KNOPPIX seems to enjoy and also because the entire file system on CD can be easily transferred onto your hard disk (see the bottom of the KNOPPIX FAQ), it has now been given its own page on DistroWatch. A new release of KNOPPIX (V3.1-08-10-2002) has just appeared on the mirrors. Changes include downgrade of the Linux Kernel to 2.4.19, downgrade of GNOME to 1.4 and upgrade of XFree86 to 4.2.1. This is the CHANGELOG in German and these are the download links for English and German versions: KNOPPIX_V3.1-08-10-2002-EN.iso (699MB), KNOPPIX_V3.1-08-10-2002-DE.iso (699MB). At last you can stop emailing me about KNOPPIX :-)

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
