Distribution Release: GoboLinux 014.01 |
| Carlo Calica has announced the availability of a minor point release of GoboLinux, version 014.01: "We are very happy to introduce GoboLinux 014.01, the new release of GoboLinux, the Linux distribution with an alternative file system structure. This release is our first 'point release', providing a stability update for our latest major version, GoboLinux 014, which was released three months ago. Overview: the CD serves both as an installation disc and a live CD, with a complete graphical desktop featuring KDE 3.5.8, OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 and a host of applications; features an installer that works on both text and graphical mode; features a udev-based hardware detection system." | Carlo Calica has announced a beta release of GoboLinux 014.01, a desktop Linux distribution featuring a radically redesigned file system hierarchy: "I'm proud to announce GoboLinux 014.01-beta1. This is shaping up to be a pretty solid release. Please test this thoroughly; we'll be pressing 4,000 CDs for the International Forum on Free Software and the deadline is April 1st. Hisham Muhammad has announced the release of GoboLinux 014, an independent distribution whose main claim to fame is a radically redesigned file system layout: "We are pleased to introduce GoboLinux 014, the new major release of GoboLinux, the Linux distribution with an alternative directory structure. This release is the result of over a year of work. The live CD build environment is highly customizable and packages were built using a dynamically-generated sand-boxed environment which insulates the source code and its dependencies during compilation. | Lucas Villa Real has announced the first release candidate for GoboLinux 014, a desktop Linux distribution with a radically overhauled file system layout: "The first release candidate for GoboLinux 014 is out! Among other things, it includes a massive update of packages, including glibc 2.5, X.Org 7.2, GCC 4.1.2 and KDE 3.5.6, with Linux kernel 2.6.20.4 + UTF-8 support. We have now a better printing support, with a few basic drivers included in the live CD. And there were many, many bug fixes in the GoboLinux tools since 013, so we hope to provide a better experience for you all." This release is the result of over an year of work on the build infrastructure used by the distribution. The new live CD build environment is highly customizable and package building was overhauled by using a dynamically-generated sandboxed environment which insulates the source code and its dependencies during compilation. After considerable improvements regarding device management (new version of udev and hotplug), GoboLinux 012rc1 is available for download. Hardware-related configuration scripts were also reorganized, and are now concentrated in a 'ConfigTools' package. Many tests and stability enhancements were performed last two weeks, giving this ISO a release candidate status. 012 final is planned to no latter that 30/05 (hard deadline). | The second beta of GoboLinux 011 is now available for download. From the announcement: "GoboLinux 011 beta2 ISO is finally uploaded. This version is far more stable than beta1, and is almost a release candidate. The main item remaining to be done is the addition of a kernel 2.6.6 image. Probably 011 final will be released in the next few days, so any report on this version is very, very welcome." | The GoboLinux project is preparing a new release, version 010: "GoboLinux 010rc1 is here. Lots of important improvements on this one, including hardware detection based on Kudzu and a graphical installer (which also works in text-mode with a curses interface). As the 'rc1' in the name implies, this is pretty close to a stable version, but it is still a development release. There are a few known issues and new ones may pop in the mailing list before 010 final is out, so, if you want to help us make 010 truly rock, give 010rc1 a spin and report your experiences in the list. | GoboLinux 007 has been released: "After some weeks of intensive work, GoboLinux 007 final is available for download (download it!). Since 006, there were major improvements all over the system, including the functionality required to pack 'Environment', 'Daemons' and 'Default Settings' information within packages (using the 'Resources' directory). The Live CD experience was also severely improved: now you can run even KDE and OpenOffice without touching your hard disk. With the use of IsoLinux, most (maybe all) of the compatibility problems experienced when trying to boot the 006 CD on certain machines are solved. If you have a GoboLinux 006 running, you don't need to reinstall it. Use the GoboLinux006-007 conversion script to turn your system fully compatible with the new scripts and packages." At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
