Distribution Release: GeeXboX 1.2.2 |
| GeeXboX 1.2.2, a standalone, Linux-based media player, has been released: "GeeXboX 1.2.2 - feature enhancement release. With a few interesting patches recently having been committed to 2.0 development tree, people on the forum asked for backport of these to the stable 1.2 release. So did we, adding a new key feature, with multi-threaded video decoding support. Non-IT people can see this as a way to finally make use of their brand-new multi-core CPU systems providing parallelized treatment. And the results are pretty good, with a 1.8x video decoding speed boost on Core 2 Duo and 3.0x speed-up with Core 2 Quad. It is now truly possible to actually decode 1080p HDTV streams on Linux." | GeeXboX 1.2, a minimalist distribution designed to turn a personal computer into a multimedia home theatre, has been released: "Today marks the GeeXboX 1.2 release that was awaited for such a long time. This is a really important step for the project, being the very latest release from the 1.x series. The 1.2 took quite a long time to emerge but brought a lot of features, the most important ones being the x86_64 architecture support and the HDTV and widescreens optimizations through X.Org inclusion. We've also added a brand new tool, called Win32 installer that allows installing GeeXboX to a current hard-disk without the need of partitioning and formatting it again. GeeXboX 1.2 is the last version that relies on our original MPlayer OSD-based blue screen user interface. Over the years (and especially last months), a lot of efforts have been made to work on the upcoming 2.x series, that will feature a complete rework of the UI, based on the ultra fast and shiny Enlightenment toolkit." | The third beta release of GeeXboX 1.2, a bootable, Linux-based media player, is now ready for testing: "Here comes beta 3 which is definitely a candidate for 1.2 release. We've performed a huge amount of bug fixes in various areas and were able to correct some longstanding issues we had. Two major changes come with this release: a completely new auto-mounter that now relies on D-BUS and HAL and the restoration of installer feature. Finally you should be able to install GeeXboX again, on both your hard disk drives and USB keys. Other parts of GeeXboX also had a few changes, mostly regarding the player that received a few fixes for audio CDs, DVDs, AAC and RealVideo 9 playback. | The second beta release of GeeXboX 1.2, a bootable Linux-based multimedia centre, is ready for testing: "Here comes the second beta release of GeeXboX 1.2. There are no major changes in terms of features, but the distribution is now much more stable. Most of the corrections took place at the driver level, as many people encountered some issues with hardware support. The few PowerPC users that still exist will also be pleased to know that we've manage to resurrect the port to this architecture. | After more than one year of development, the first beta version of GeeXboX 1.2, a free embedded Linux distribution which aims at turning a computer into an HTPC (Home Theater PC) or a Media Center, was released: "As told at the time of the 1.1 release, the major change is X.Org inclusion. This was a lot of work but this allows GeeXboX to fully support wide screens and all of the new HDTV monitors. Everything is auto-detected and configured and it should detect the best resolution that suits your monitor. Along with X.Org, come all of its video drivers. Say bye bye to VIDIX (as good as it was) and welcome to XVideo. This brings video acceleration to nearly all video cards in the wild. | A new version of GeeXboX, a Linux-based movie player, has been released: "GeeXboX 1.1. Although development never stopped, more than a year has passed without any new official GeeXboX release. This new one is a really good candidate for your HTPC multimedia distribution choice. It comes with an improved hardware support, providing dozens of new drivers (a lot of new WiFi controllers, DVB card chipsets and new remote controls). | The first preview of the upcoming GeeXbox media centre version 2.0 is now available for testing: "Time has come to let you discover our very first technological preview of GeeXboX 2.x series. The decision has been taken to make use of Freevo 2.0 (still work in progress, but so is GeeXboX 2.x) and Kaa, its multimedia framework, as our new user interface reference. As a consequence, many new packages had to be added (such as Python) to our distribution. In the near future, GeeXboX and Freevo projects will be closer than ever, and we should be the official Freevo live CD, still keeping in mind our embedded and easy-to-setup approach. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
