Distribution Release: Finnix 93.0 |
| Ryan Finnie has released Finnix 93.0, a small, self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators, based on Debian's testing branch: "Finnix 93.0 released. It is a maintenance release, but due to the length of time between Finnix 92.1 and 93.0, the time between Debian upstream updates warranted a major version number bump. New features include Linux kernel 2.6.30, and updated upstream software. Vitals: Linux 2.6.30 (based on Debian 2.6.30-5), Debian testing (2009-08-08). Changes: dist-upgrade; upgraded Memtest86+ to 2.11; re-ordered main menu (x86); several fixes related to Debian and Linux kernel upgrades; removed: EVMS (unmaintained upstream, obsolete, low penetration), unionfs-tools (incompatible with current Unionfs), cramfsprogs (not used by Finnix, low need outside Finnix), ftp (use lftp instead)." Please see the release announcement and release notes for further information. Download (MD5): finnix-93.0.iso (121MB), finnix-ppc-93.0.iso (132MB). |

Distribution Release: Finnix 92.1 |
| Ryan Finnie has announced the release of Finnix 92.1, a small, self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators, based on Debian testing: "Today marks the release of version 92.1 for the x86/AMD64, PowerPC, and UML/Xen platforms. Finnix 92.1 is a regular maintenance release. New features include Linux kernel 2.6.26, updated upstream software, and x86 boot menu cleanups. Changes: dist-upgrade; upgraded kernels to 2.6.26 (Debian 2.6.26-7); added space after boot parameters in x86 boot menu, to add extra boot parameters, simply select a menu item, press Tab, then start typing extra parameters; re-added F2 cheat codes x86 boot screen, which did not carry over in the menu transition; removed dvdrtools; added Emad, an action adventure side-scrolling RPG platformer about a boy and his loving pet pig in 38th-century Scotland." Distribution Release: Finnix 92.0 |
| Ryan Finnie has announced the release of Finnix 92.0, a Debian-based live CD designed for system administrators: "Finnix 92.0 released. Finnix is a small, self-contained, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators, based on Debian 'testing'. Today marks the release of version 92.0 for the x86/AMD64, PowerPC, and UML/Xen platforms. Major new features: Finnix 92.0 contains the fix to the Debian OpenSSL predictable RNG vulnerability - a reminder that all versions of Finnix from 89.0 to 91.1 (inclusive) contained this vulnerability, so please keep this in mind when running OpenSSH servers on vulnerable versions; Linux 2.6.25; a new graphical boot menu - this boot menu will still perform 32-bit/64-bit auto-detection, and options such as 'toram' and 'testcd' can still be added to boot profiles by pressing [TAB] over a desired boot profile." Read the release announcement and release notes for a more detailed list of changes and new features. Download (MD5): finnix-92.0.iso (109MB), finnix-ppc-92.0.iso (120MB). |

Distribution Release: Finnix 91.0 |
| Ryan Finnie has announced the release of Finnix 91.0, a specialist, Debian-based live CD for system administrators: "Finnix 91.0 released. Finnix 91.0 includes a new Linux kernel (2.6.24), automatic 32-bit/64-bit detection on the x86 platform, stackable RAID/LUKS/LVM detection and setup, and several bug fixes. If you press 'enter' at the boot screen of Finnix 91.0 x86, the boot loader will now detect if you have a 64-bit capable CPU, and will load the appropriate kernel. You can still force 32-bit or 64-bit by entering the 'finnix' or 'finnix64' boot profiles. While RAID, LUKS (encryption) and LVM detection have been in Finnix for awhile now, they were loaded in a certain order, and some configurations were not detected as a result. With Finnix 91.0, most configurations should be detected. For example, an encrypted LVM set on top of two RAID disks should be set up automatically." Distribution Release: Finnix 89.0 |
| Ryan Finnie has announced a new release of Finnix, a Debian-based, bootable Linux CD distribution for system administrators: "Today marks the release of version 89.0 for the x86 (and now AMD64), PowerPC, and UML/Xen platforms. Finnix 89.0 features Linux 2.6.18, a new 'finnix64' AMD64 boot profile, netboot support with a built-in netboot setup wizard, MD RAID and LUKS crypt auto-detection. An AMD64 kernel is now included on the Finnix x86 CD. While the Finnix userland is still 32-bit, using an AMD64 kernel on a supported platform yields several advantages: more than 4GB memory can be utilized natively; statically-compiled AMD64 applications can be executed; you can chroot into native 64-bit AMD64 file systems." See the release announcement and release notes for additional details. Download (MD5): finnix-89.0.iso (108MB), finnix-ppc-89.0.iso (119MB). |

Distribution Release: Finnix 86.0 |
| Remember Finnix? One of the oldest live CDs ever created but discontinued after 2000, the developers of this minimalistic distribution for system administrators are back with a new release. Based on Debian GNU/Linux and complete with LVM2 or dm-crypt packages, Finnix 86.0 is now ready: "Nearly 6 years ago, Finnix 0.03 made history as one of the first bootable CD Linux distributions. It may have taken a while, but Finnix is back as a small (less than 100MB), fully-featured live CD for system administrators." Visit the project's home page and read the release notes to learn more about the new Finnix live CD. Download from here: finnix-86.0.iso (97.1MB, MD5). |

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
