What's new? From the release announcement: "The Elive team is proud to announce the release of Elive development (Compiz) version 1.9.27. This is a major update for the Compiz series of Elive. Changes: instead of configuring Compiz from ECSM, you can now do it from a module; the cube is disabled by default due to its instability compared to the wall mode; not that the switcher (window switcher) of Compiz is ugly, but it's a bit annoying while the default switcher of E17 is a lot more powerful, configurable, and stable, so we use it as default now (it is still accessed by pressing the Win key plus the Tab key). | Version 1.9.10 is the latest test release of Elive, a Debian-based distribution with a heavily customised Enlightenment 17 desktop: "The Elive team is proud to announce the release of the development version 1.9.10. This version doesn't include Exalt (a network configuration tool) any more, but there is a new application in Elpanel. Ibar is replaced by Itask-ng - Elive now has a zooming bar similar to the one in Mac OS X. It also has another feature enabled by default - 'lock icons', which prevents the user from removing icons accidentally. Vim color scheme hacks - the default color theme of Elive has been hacked for better development and coding. PDF printer - it is now possible to create PDFs from a page, document, or anything just by selecting to print to a PDF file in the printer menu. | A new unstable build of Elive is out: "Elive 0.5.5 development released." The release announcement hints at some reasons for the new release; as an example, those who wish to upgrade to the latest version of X.Org will find that their ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers no longer work, a new version of GCC from Debian will prevent the proprietary kernel drivers from installing successfully without recompiling the kernel, and there is also a serious bug affecting certain SCSI-emulated CD-ROMs. The new release comes with a downgraded kernel version 2.6.15.7 and several WiFi driver modules. | The development of Elive 0.5.1 has started and the first unstable release is now available for download. What's new? According to the release announcement, the most interesting new feature is the inclusion of kernel 2.6.18, complete with improved support for wireless networking and ready for deployment on machines with multiple processors. Other new features include: installer improvements with automatic, manual and expert modes, and with package configuration via debconf; new stable release of Enlightenment 17, version 0.17.8.3, with new features and effects (Xcomposite, zoom, sound in themes, Xinerama, localisation and RandR); update to Cinelerra 2.1. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
