CentOS 4 Offers Strong RHEL Alternative |
 |
Sean Michael Kerner has published a review on CentOS: "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 was released on February 14th, CentOS issued its cloned version two weeks later on March 2nd. Since then I've been evaluating CentOS and putting it through its paces to see if it would hold up to its auspicious genetic parent. Though certainly not perfect, CentOS offers a palatable (free) option for those that want/need Enterprise grade stability without enterprise grade support or cost." Distribution Release: CentOS 3.3 |
 |
CentOS 3.3 has been released: "CentOS 3.3 is available for general use. This is a complete rebuild of all the updated packages that Red Hat has included in the SRPMs of their Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3. The changed packages from update 3 are overlaid onto 3.1. This release includes a rebuilt Anaconda and new boot kernels for the installer. An update from 3.1 should be seamless. Simply, running 'yum update' should get all the latest packages from your local mirror repository. If you'd like to reinstall your system from scratch or install a new system you will need to download all new disk images as the ones for 3.1 will not install from the 3.3 installation directories." Read the rest of the release announcement. Download (i386): CentOS-3.3-i386-disc1.iso (631MB), CentOS-3.3-i386-disc2.iso (636MB), CentOS-3.3-i386-disc3.iso (346MB). ISO images for x86_64 are also available.

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
