NEW • Distribution Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 14 |
| Linux Caixa Mágica 14, a Portuguese desktop and server distribution based on Mandriva Linux, has been released. According to the release announcement, Linux Caixa Mágica is the most widely used Linux distribution in Portugal, often deployed in offices and schools around the country. The latest release features: support for proprietary video drivers by ATI and NVIDIA; support for suspend-to-RAM on notebooks; improved support for modern wireless network cards and printers; over 20,000 software packages in the distribution's repositories, installable with APT for RPM or Synaptic package managers. Main components: Linux kernel 2.6.29, X.Org Server 1.6.1, KDE 4.2.2, GNOME 2.26.1, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, Firefox 3.0.10. Development Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 14 RC1 |
| Linux Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese general-purpose distribution based on Mandriva Linux. The first release candidate of the upcoming version 14, scheduled for final release in the first half o May, was announced yesterday. The main features of this release include improved hardware detection and better usability, while the major software components of the release are Linux kernel 2.6.29, KDE 4.2.2 and GNOME 2.26. Also included are APT for RPM and Synaptic, developed by Caixa Mágica, featuring a "rollback" ability, recording of package installation failures, and communication with the central server. The announcement warns that it isn't possible to upgrade systems running older versions of Caixa Mágica, so those interested in helping to test the distribution should perform a clean installation. Distribution Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 12 |
| Linux Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese desktop and server distribution based Mandriva Linux. Version 12 is the project's latest release available for both the i586 and x86_64 architectures. Some of the more interesting new features include: 3G access; support for national identity card readers; friendly desktop with 3D effects courtesy of Compiz Fusion; new hardware detection engine, OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 in Portuguese; new server software. The distribution is powered by Linux kernel 2.6.22 and includes X.Org 7.2, the default KDE desktop 3.5.7, GNOME 2.20, GIMP 2.4.3, Synaptic and APT for RPM package management tools, proprietary graphics drivers, and support for many popular media formats and browser plugins. Development Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 12 RC1 |
| The first release candidate of Linux Caixa Mágica 12, a Portuguese Linux distribution, is now available for download and testing. The most interesting change is the fact that this release is no longer based on openSUSE, as was the case with the project's all previous releases, but on Mandriva Linux 2008. Also, the RPM packages are now managed with APT and Synaptic, while Mandriva Control Centre is used for general system configuration. Distribution Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 11 |
| Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese distribution for i586 and x86_64 processors, based on SUSE Linux. Caixa Mágica 11 is designed for both desktops and servers; it offers an easy-to-use desktop environment with KDE or GNOME, custom configuration utilities, intuitive installation program with an option to resize NTFS partitions, convenient software installation and updates via apt-get (for RPM) and Synaptic, improved hardware detection and support, and a complete desktop environment in Portuguese. Distribution Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 10 Live CD |
| The developers of Linux Caixa Mágica, a Portuguese desktop and server distribution based on SUSE Linux, have released a live CD edition of Caixa Mágica 10 Desktop. Designed as a bootable CD without the need to install it to a hard disk, this product is an excellent way to test the distribution and may also be given freely to friends and colleagues who might be interested in experimenting with Linux. Development Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 10 Beta |
| A first beta release of Portugal's Caixa Mágica 10, Desktop Edition, is now available for download and testing. Some of the major new features include the following: easier management of RPM packages with apt-get and Synaptic, NTFS partition resizing during installation, GRUB has replaced LILO, support for wireless network and Bluetooth devices, support for SATA serial drives, improved hardware support, an upgrade path from version 8.1 is provided. The main components are: kernel 2.6.8, X.Org 6.8.1, KDE 3.3.0, OpenOffice.org 1.1.3, Firefox 1.0, Thunderbird 0.9. At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
