Development Release: BackTrack 4 Beta |
| The first beta build of BackTrack 4, an Ubuntu-based distribution featuring a comprehensive collection of security and forensics tools, has been released: "The Remote Exploit development team is happy to announce the release of BackTrack 4 Beta. We have taken huge conceptual leaps with BackTrack 4, and have some new and exciting features. The most significant of these changes is our expansion from the realm of a penetration testing live CD towards a full blown distribution. Now based on Debian core packages and using the Ubuntu software repositories, BackTrack 4 can be upgraded in case of update. When syncing with our BackTrack repositories, you will regularly get security tool updates soon after they are released. Some of the new features include: kernel 2.6.28.1 with better hardware support; native support for Pico e12 and e16 cards is now fully functional; support for PXE boot...." Distribution Release: Auditor Security Linux 200605 |
| Auditor Security Linux is a Knoppix-based live CD with a large collection of security-related tools and utilities. Version 200605 was released today: "I am proud to announce the release of the new version of the Auditor Security Collection CD-ROM. We put in a lot of effort to bring it into that final look and feel as you can see in the Auditor development log. It seems to be the best version released ever. Not only because of its completeness, but also because it seems to be the most stable and bug-free version. You will see that in this version you have to choose between two different ISO versions. This has to be done because systems with an integrated Intel b/g chip based wireless card will not boot with the ipw2100 driver on the CD." Find more details in the release announcement and changelog. Download: auditor-200605-02-ipw2100.iso (635MB, MD5) or auditor-200605-02-no-ipw2100.iso (634MB, MD5). |

| Auditor Security Linux is a KANOTIX-based live CD with a collection of tools for system auditing and forensic analysis. A new version was announced today: "The new version is finished and distributed already on some of the usual mirrors. First of all, it is a major rewrite. Switched over to Kanotix which is much nicer than regular Knoppix. I guess most of you are interested in the new bluetooth and wireless stuff: for the bluetooth section, you have all the needed tools for a proof of all known bluetooth attacks; in the wireless section you will find new versions of Cowpatty, File2air and aireplay as well as Wellenreiter and Kismet; new card types are supported now and a lot of fine-tuning was done." You can find much more information in the release announcement and changelog. Download: auditor-120305-01.iso.zip (659MB).

At one point or another gamers can hit the wall when using other OS systems such as Linux and Mac, as Windows has always been renowned as the OS of choice for the gaming community. In a lot of cases this has changed somewhat over the last few years with the use of virtualization software that helps to bridge that gap, and it can be quite successful to a point. Of course, when you virtualize another OS you can lose some of the performance, than say running a game natively, and with slowdowns and bugs comes frustration. We have listed a few resources that we think are worth a mention for different types of gamers, both online multiplayer and single player, see what you think:
- World of Goo. This is a great puzzle game that will keep you busy for hours, there's also a free playable demo version.
- If you're a online poker enthusiast we can recommend you check out the pokerlistings.com Linux poker page, it has a list of poker apps that are compatible with your OS.
- For the MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) crowds you could always take a look at Vendetta online, "thousands of people can play together, at the same time, in a single, persistent universe", sounds great!
